Depth Psych
Pioneered by William James, Sigmund Freud, and Carl Gustav Jung, Depth Psychology is the study of how we dialogue with the Unconscious via symbols, dreams, myth, art, nature. By paying attention to the messages that show up from beyond our conscious egos, we can be guided to greater understanding, transformation, and integration with the world around us, inner and outer. Carl Jung and James Hillman: The Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowing Good and Evil

Carl Jung and James Hillman: The Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowing Good and Evil | Depth Psych | Scoop.it
I found this great quote from Tom Cheetham (in his works on Henry Corbin). I think only true Hillmaniacs can understand it, especially when we are trying to reconcile the drive toward integrative wholeness while recognizing the necessity of falling apart:

"To compare Hillman and Jung in any detail is far beyond the scope of these remarks...Hillman is "a Jungian" by any standard, but rather a wayward one. Any simple contrast will be inadequate and perhaps misleading; but if Jung is the Wise Old man, Hillman is the Trickster, or pretends to be. Years ago when I was immersed in reading them both rather obsessively in the midst of the beginnings of my own psychic crisis, the difference was quite a practical one about which I thought very little. If I were feeling threatened by fragmentation, I would read Jung. If I were in terror of being bound and stifled, I would read Hillman. I still think  that says a lot about their differences."... Quotes from C.G. Jung On The Shadow

Quotes from C.G. Jung On The Shadow | Depth Psych | Scoop.it
Unfortunately there can be no doubt that man is, on the whole, less good than he imagines himself or wants to be. Everyone carries a shadow, and the less it is embodied in the individual's conscious life, the blacker and denser it is. If an inferiority is conscious, one always has a chance to correct it. Furthermore, it is constantly in contact with other interests, so that it is continually subjected to modifications. But if it is repressed and isolated from consciousness, it never gets corrected.
"Psychology and Religion" (1938). In CW 11: Psychology and Religion: West and East. P.131
"Taking it in its deepest sense, the shadow is the invisible saurian tail that man still drags behind him. Carefully amputated, it becomes the healing serpent of the mysteries. Only monkeys parade with it.The Integration of the Personality. (1939) (Click title for more)

» It’s Halloween: Recognizing Our Shadow Side - Psych Central | Depth Psych | Scoop.it

Watching a friend struggle to create an owl costume for her pre-schooler to wear this Halloween, I asked her why she didn’t persuade him to think of something simpler. “He says he wants to be an owl because it’s the scariest thing he can think of,” my friend replied.

Ahh. Precisely. Her little guy is wiser than I am. He knows instinctively what I had forgotten: From ancient times, the point of Halloween has always been to confront our fears of the dark, of death, of evil spirits and all the things that “go bump in the night.”

Death always has been and probably always will be a mystery and mysteries make people nervous. Our fears and anxieties about what happens next has driven the imagination of ... (click title for more)

Shape-Shifting Through Darkness

Shape-Shifting Through Darkness | Depth Psych | Scoop.it

Three separate clients came to me recently in very dark places. One had just lost her job and felt trapped--she described herself as being in a “coffin.” The second one was a single mother with a 2-month old baby who was living in a foreign country with no support system. I saw her life as she had known it disintegrating and an image appeared of her “melting” into the earth. And the image that showed up with the third client’s story was of being caught inside a black bag, desperately trying to get out. For all of them of course, the rational choice would be to get the heck out of that dark place, clawing oneself--by whatever means available--back into the “light.”

As humans, our normal mode is to be in the light--working, connecting, building things, and busily interacting with other humans. When life as we know it disintegrates, we may find ourselves being... (Click title to continue reading)

Psyche, Eros, and Aphrodite: The Beauty/Soul Connection - Myth and More

Psyche, Eros, and Aphrodite: The Beauty/Soul Connection - Myth and More | Depth Psych | Scoop.it

The myth of Psyche (the word psyche means “soul” in Greek), Cupid, her invisible lover (Eros in Greek), and Cupid’s mother, the goddess of beauty and love, Venus (Aphrodite in Greek), illustrates how deeply Beauty, Soul, and Love are interrelated.

This relationship can show up in a modern context of the spa experience.  The many spa treatments readily available might be presumed to be merely pampering and possibly even decadent. However, if approached in the right frame of mind, they have the potential to touch us deeply and nurture the soul.

STORY OVERVIEW

The story of “The Invisible Lover” is a chapter from the greater work of The Metamorphoses (also known as... (Click title for more)...

Psychodynamics of Halloween Costumes, Avatars and Profile Images

Psychodynamics of Halloween Costumes, Avatars and Profile Images | Depth Psych | Scoop.it

Find out what your choice of a Halloween costume might be saying about you!...

According to Carl Jung and Jungian psychology, everyone has a persona and a shadow. Our persona is the face or mask that we show others. The shadow represents the darker, hidden aspects of our personality that we hide from others. The two create a polarity of opposites and a need for balance; the larger the persona, the larger the shadow.

A person may exert a great deal of effort to maintain a persona as a pillar of society while exerting equal effort to maintain secrecy about some deviant behavior; the judge who is a repeat DUI offender and the scout leader who despises children are examples. It is this need for balance that explains the popularity of Halloween, with its roots in pagan ritual. One night a year... (click title for more)

Some Archetypes from C.G. Jung

Some Archetypes from C.G. Jung | Depth Psych | Scoop.it

Jung Dream Interpretation is based on the Carl Jung theory of the collective unconscious. Jung provided description of seven separate characters and themes commonly occurring in dreams.

The main Carl Jung theory that his dream interpretation was built on, was that of the "collective unconscious." Jung believed this to be a collection of symbols that were shared by every human being but retained at the unconscious level. The symbols of the collective unconscious are provided to humans via the process of dreaming across generations and cultures.

Jung provided description of seven separate characters and themes commonly occurring in dreams throughout time as being major central to the collective unconscious:

The Seven Characters

1. The Persona – This archetype is symbolic of the dreamer whilst in dream mode. In other words, a projection...
