What is holding back progress in accessible building? by Thea Kurdi, Accessibility Specialist of the Built Environment, Design for Life Expert

Gail Zahtz's insight:

Excellent article by Thea Kurdi on why more buildings are not built for all. One salient point is that architects do not consult accessibility specialists at the time of planning, and focus on code but not demographic changes over the lifetime of the building. She also has some well researched points on the impact of non-accessible spaces - including 1 billion disabled globally and other astounding numbers.

Thea Kurdi is a Design for Life expert (see her on www.DemandDesign.net) and hear an in-depth interview with her at http://www.senserit.com/?page_id=6899 guest #19.

Lighthouse International - Effective Color Contrast

Lighthouse International - Effective Color Contrast | Universal, Accessible, Sustainable and Sensory Design | Scoop.it
Gail Zahtz's insight:

Color contrast is one of the least expensive and most important steps to take for accessible, universal design.  This means that where there is a door knob, a door, a sign, a change in direction, all #designers should be using color contrast for the majority of people who are having some kind of gradual vision loss, or have the confusion that is brought on for anyone during a stressful day, or a regular illness like the flu or a fever.  Here are effective color contrasts.
