Communism in textiles: Soviet fabrics from the 20's and 30's | D_sign | Scoop.it

If you walked by a set of curtains made from one of these fabrics, you might not pick up on a communist star or the CCCP acronym. Many of the designs are thematic of classical Russian art; you see lush color, dense scapes and even the odd Orientalist trope. Anything more than a quick glance however, might reveal romantic depictions of farmers and factory workers, often rendered in the angular, geometric lines of Soviet Constructivism.

What happens when you layer every single font, including the ugly ones, on top of one another? You get The Average Font, a typographic experiment by Vienna-based Moritz Resl. With over 900 typefaces installed on his computer, Resl wrote software that would use every single font with low opacity to create each character from a to z.

A project of the Spanish design firm atipo, the ultra-minimalist movie poster collection 'Papers For Characters' takes iconic movies like Jaws and Rear Window and strips them down to their most basic elements. Those elements are translated into the insanely specific medium of papers of various sheet weights and textures, which are then hand manipulated to release the artistic soul of the film as expressed through the medium of design.

Dubbed Urban Skyfarm, the folks at Aprilli conceived a 525-foot 'living' skyscraper capable of housing over 1.5 million square feet of common space. Not all the space would be used to grow food. Pathways and a high-flying skybridge would be integrated into the design so that visitors could meander about the gardens, hydroponic decks and orchards.
