Personal Branding for Librarians | American Libraries Magazine | De Informatieprofessional | Scoop.it

American Libraries Magazine, the magazine of the American Library Association, delivers news and information about the library community.

Content Curation: 10 Tips To Help You Curate Ethically | De Informatieprofessional | Scoop.it

Excerpt from the article by Pawan Deshpande and published on Content Marketing Institute:
"Many content curators are still unsure about what constitutes ethical curation, and how they can share third-party content without running afoul of copyright laws.
Here’s our 10-step checklist to help you curate ethically and effectively.

1. Draw from a variety of sources;
2. Prominently link to the original source;
3. Avoid “nofollow” links;
4. Quote sparingly;
5. Insert your own point of view;
6. Fill in the gaps;
7. Use thumbnail images;
8. Give readers the option to close an iFrame or share bar;
9. Add a new title;
10. Claim Google authorship, as appropriate..."

A simple link. That's all it took to unleash a hailstorm of angry emails, messages, tweets, and comments. Why? I dared wonder if libraries will continue to exist in the future.

Annemarijs's insight:

MG Siegler verwacht het einde van de (openbare) bibliotheken oa door  "The internet has replaced the importance of libraries as a repository for knowledge. And digital distribution has replaced the role of a library as a central hub for obtaining the containers of such knowledge: books. And digital bits have replaced the need to cut down trees to make paper and waste ink to create those books. This is evolution, not devolution. Surprise! It's the Golden Age of Libraries

Surprise! It's the Golden Age of Libraries | De Informatieprofessional | Scoop.it
As more and more millennials are enrolled in virtual higher education opportunities not tied to university campuses, the public library is a central site of learning and innovation.In part, the defunding of public libraries is easy because libraries are no longer about collections; they are about connections. They are centers of activity, and not necessarily centers of visible production. Michael Ridley, writer at Beyond-Literacy and a University of Ghelph (Canada) librarian on sabbatical, says: "The public library was often viewed as the 'university of the people.' This is still a good metaphor; it is one that needs to be put on steroids. Public libraries are now centers for social workers, entrepreneurial incubators, literacy classes, maker spaces, puppet shows, and hacker labs as well as places for books, magazines, and videos."

Via Trudy Raymakers
Annemarijs's insight:

Americans are all for more technology resources in libraries, so long as they don't have to fork over space occupied by print books.
Annemarijs's insight:

Libraries and Their Landscapes - Library Journal

Libraries and Their Landscapes - Library Journal | De Informatieprofessional | Scoop.it
Cicero was suggesting a garden in the library, where he could spend his time in a natural setting, reading, writing, and conversing with his colleagues. This ancient idea can also apply to contemporary thinking about libraries and their landscapes. How do we thoughtfully place a library in the landscape? And how can we create outdoor spaces that work in concert with the library interior?

When a new public library is planned, it is not only the design that must be considered. The placement of the building in its setting (its landscape) and the design of the landscape together with the building are fundamental parts of the planning process. Unfortunately, architectural endeavors sometimes focus almost exclusively on the building itself. How the building might relate to its setting is often an afterthought. As a result, important opportunities to enhance both the building and its site are overlooked.

Ebook Platforms in Libraries: A new report in the works

November 2nd, 2012 · by Mirela Roncevic · 2 Comments

I am in the midst of developing a library technology report for ALA TechSource (a unit of the publishing department of the American Library Association), due out in the Spring of 2013. The focus: ebook platforms in libraries. As I am amassing information about various products from publishers and aggregators on the specifics of each platform, I’ve decided to open it up to a broader audience in the early stages of the writing process and obtain feedback from all who may benefit.

Publishers and aggregators: Please take a moment to read the proposed contents of the report (below) and let me know where your products fit and why. I plan to cover a variety of resources.

Librarians: What are your main frustrations when selecting ebook platforms? Please take a moment to consider if the details I plan to include about each product will help you make informed purchasing decisions.

Content Curation Tools: 21 Criteria To Select And Evaluate Your Ideal One

Content Curation Tools: 21 Criteria To Select And Evaluate Your Ideal One | De Informatieprofessional | Scoop.it

Excerpt from article written and curated by Master Curator Robin Good and published on MasterNewMedia:
"Many such curation tools also appear to be very similar to one another, especially if evaluated exclusively from the type of news streams or visual collections that can be produced with them.

The most limiting factor of all, in making an effective selection when it comes to content curation tools is the lack of a proper evaluation framework, identifying the specific requirements and needs that need to be met by the content curation tool to be selected.

I am now publicly sharing this list of selection criteria, complemented by relevant questions to be asked when verifying the availability of these features to help both individuals, small organizations and companies evaluate better, and in a more systematic fashion, their ideal content curation toolset.

Here the features-list, organized into 21 groups. (*I have marked with HS those features relevant only to hosted content curation services.)
1. Import and Export functions
2. Content Organization
3. Clipping Abilities
4. Integrated Search
5. Content Monitoring - News Discovery

7. Display formats

Placements & Salaries 2013: The Emerging Databrarian - Library Journal | De Informatieprofessional | Scoop.it

"The real achievements for the 2012 library and information science graduating class came in the form of emerging jobs and new responsibilities, according to the approximately 1,900 graduates who responded to LJ’s annual Placements & Salaries survey, representing 30.7 percent of the 2012 graduates from the 41 participating programs.

Several new job titles appeared among the survey responses, including emerging technologies librarian, e-learning and distance learning librarian, and e-lending librarian. Social media manager and project manager were also among the popular job titles, and individuals who found positions in academic institutions were as likely to be instructional designers and user experience designers as they were to be reference librarians."
