14 World-Changing Data Visualizations from the Last 4 Centuries

14 World-Changing Data Visualizations from the Last 4 Centuries | DataViz | Scoop.it

Science may be difficult, but it doesn’t have to be ugly. These images, from a new exhibit at the British Library, show how beautiful scientific data can be.

The exhibit features classic illustrations dating to 1603, including John Snow’s map of London’s SoHo that’s credited with revealing a contaminated water pump as the source of a 1854 cholera outbreak. There also are beautiful modern visualizations of data from satellites and gene sequencers. The exhibit, Beautiful Science: Picturing Data, Inspiring Insight, runs through May 26.

VOYAGES: The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database

VOYAGES: The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database | DataViz | Scoop.it
Patrice Mitrano's insight:

Global Temperatures Since 1900 [visualizing.org]

Global Temperatures Since 1900 [visualizing.org] | DataViz | Scoop.it
What is this? This map shows monthly average temperatures recorded by approximately 7,280 climate stations around the world since 1900. Our goal was to show the beauty in the diversity of land temperatures, rather than to provide a precise weather map. Read more about our motivation on our blog post.Mapping approachTemperature measurements are taken at specific geographic locations. We used a Voronoi tessellation to turn these points into colored regions on the map. This method is not always precise, but gives a fairly good approximation, especially in areas where weather stations are close to each other.Data sourceMonthly mean temperature, used for NCDC climate monitoring activities, including calculation of global land surface temperature anomalies and trends.

Public opinion about global warming is an important influence on decision making about policies to reduce global warming or prepare for the impacts, but American opinions vary widely depending on where people live. So why would we rely on just one national number to understand public responses to climate change at the state and local levels?
