This Interactive Sochi Calendar Completely Reinvents How We Understand Scheduling

This Interactive Sochi Calendar Completely Reinvents How We Understand Scheduling | DataViz | Scoop.it

Calendars are a fairly well-understood, unquestioned form of linear organization. Rarely is the format questioned or challenged, but once you see this new interactive circular calendar produced by creative agency Column Five and hosted by SportsInteraction, you’ll wonder how you ever thought you’d understand the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics without it.

The incredibly intuitive calendar sorts the Sochi events by sport and date. Each color represents a sport while each ring representing a day, all of which is completely interactive and has the events listed by an American time zone for our stateside convenience.

As the information becomes available, the calendar will have more country and competitor data listed, along with results being continuously updated.

Self explicit! The actual interactive visualization module cannot be accessed from sites in Greece, though, as it is hosted on a Games gambling site, blocked at least by our provider. Pitty.

BERTIFIER - Inria (AVIZ)

BERTIFIER - Inria (AVIZ) | DataViz | Scoop.it

Bertifier is a Web app for rapidly creating tabular visualizations from spreadsheets. It directly draws from Jacques Bertin’s matrix analysis method, whose goal was to "simplify without destroying" by encoding cell values visually and grouping similar rows and columns. These pages contains material that supplement our article (PDF below). The content will be updated and enriched over time.

Patrice Mitrano's insight:

Enfin une application en ligne qui permet le traitement matriciel dans la droite ligne des travaux de Jacques Bertin !

Un beau projet de l'équipe Analysis ans Visualization (AVIZ) de l'INRIA.

Visualizing Publicly Available US Government Data Online

Visualizing Publicly Available US Government Data Online | DataViz | Scoop.it

Brightpoint Consulting recently released a small collection of interactive visualizations based on open, publicly available data from the US government. Characterized by a rather organic graphic design style and color palette, each visualization makes a socially and politically relevant dataset easily accessible.

The custom chore diagram titled Political Influence [http://www.brightpointinc.com/political_influence/] highlights the monetary contributions made by the top Political Action Committees (PAC) for the 2012 congressional election cycle, for the House of Representatives and the Senate.

The hierarchical browser 2013 Federal Budget [http://www.brightpointinc.com/2013-federal-budget/] reveals the major flows of spending in the US government, at the federal, state, and local level, such as the relationship of spending between education and defense.

The circular flow chart United States Trade Deficit [http://www.brightpointinc.com/united-states-trade-deficit/] shows the US Trade Deficit over the last 11 years by month. The United States sells goods to the countries at a the top, while vice versa, the countries at the bottom sell goods to the US. The dollar amount in the middle represents the cumulative deficit over this period of time.

Mapping the Spread of Ebola | National Geographic

Mapping the Spread of Ebola | National Geographic | DataViz | Scoop.it
Since March, the Ebola virus outbreak has infected 5,864 people and caused 2,811 deaths in West Africa. With no proven treatment, the World Health Organization (WHO) is scrambling to halt an epidemic its officials say is unparalleled in severity, complexity, and scale—which is likely underreported. The current outbreak has had more cases and deaths than all previous outbreaks combined.
