Journalism in the age of the open web

Journalism in the age of the open web | dataInnovation | Scoop.it
Katharine Viner, deputy editor of the Guardian and editor-in-chief of Guardian Australia, gave the AN Smith lecture in Melbourne on Wednesday night. Here's her speech

Via Pierre Levy
Fàtima Galan's insight:

"A newspaper is complete. It is finished, sure of itself, certain. By contrast, digital news is constantly updated, improved upon, changed, moved, developed, an ongoing conversation and collaboration. It is living, evolving, limitless, relentless.

....

I'd like to talk about some of the new possibilities of a journalism that is genuinely open to the web, and some of the dangers and traps.

Digital is not about putting up your story on the web. It's about a fundamental redrawing of journalists' relationship with our audience, how we think about our readers, our perception of our role in society, our status.

.........

In the era of the newspaper, there were few writers and many readers. Now, it can be hard to tell the difference. The People Formerly Known as the Audience don't just sit there, and if you don't listen to them, work with them, work for them, give them what they want and need, they have plenty of other places to go."

How MIT Visualizes Supply Chain Risk | #SNA #predictive | dataInnovation | Scoop.it
MIT Supply Chain Management Director Bruce Arntzen discusses risk visualization and Sourcemap [Video]

How does a company keep tabs on thousands of suppliers? That’s the question Bruce Arntzen tried to answer when he started the Hi-Viz Research Project. As Executive Director of MIT’s Supply Chain Management Program, Arntzen works with corporations to find innovative solutions to supply chain problems. The idea for the Hi-Viz project came during a 2011 meeting of the Supply Chain Risk Leadership Council. A survey of attendees listed Supply Chain Visibility as the top concern. Why? With thousands of suppliers and sub-suppliers, it can be very time-consuming to find the weakest link in a supply chain. Arntzen’s solution: an automatic visualization of the end-to-end supply chain where the weakest links could be seen in real time. Watch his interview to learn how MIT and Sourcemap developed the first automated risk visualization [more details below the fold].

In 2015, the Hi-Viz project is partnering with actuarial data providers to provide predictive risk analytics. Sourcemap is making available inventory risk mapping as part of its enterprise software-as-a-service. Want to get involved? Learn more about the Hi-Viz project, or contact Sourcemap for a demo.

Economic complexity: A different way to look at the economy

Economic complexity: A different way to look at the economy - Foundations & Frontiers - Medium

By W. Brian Arthur; External Professor, Santa Fe Institute; Visiting Researcher, Palo Alto Research Center.

Economics is a stately subject, one that has altered little since its modern foundations were laid in Victorian times. Now it is changing radically. Standard economics is suddenly being challenged by a number of new approaches: behavioral economics, neuroeconomics, new institutional economics. One of the new approaches came to life at the Santa Fe Institute: complexity economics.

Complexity economics got its start in 1987 when a now-famous conference of scientists and economists convened by physicist Philip Anderson and economist Kenneth Arrow met to discuss the economy as an evolving complex system. That conference gave birth a year later to the Institute’s first research program – the Economy as an Evolving Complex System – and I was asked to lead this. That program in turn has gone on to lay down a new and different way to look at the economy.

Via Alessandro Cerboni
Fàtima Galan's insight:

"Where does complexity economics find itself now? Certainly, many commentators see it as steadily moving toward the center of economics. And there’s a recognition that it is more than a new set of methods or theories: it is a different way to see the economy. It views the economy not as machine-like, perfectly rational, and essentially static, but as organic, always exploring, and always evolving – always constructing itself."
