Big Data can be extremely dangerous without a Big Brain to analyse them properly.

Huge data sets ALWAYS contain some relations: some of them are right (causation), others are simply wrong. It pertains to data analysis to uncover the truth.

"As we move into an era in which personal devices are seen as proxies for public needs, we run the risk that already existing inequities will be further entrenched.

[...]

This goes beyond merely conducting focus groups to confirm what you already want to see in a big data set. It means complementing data sources with rigorous qualitative research."

Where does Silicon Valley’s talent come from? This incredibly detailed map tells all.

The visualization, made by Bloomberg Businessweek, shows the top 100 sources of “imported talent,” from both U.S. states and foreign countries.

According to Bloomberg, “Asian Americans became the majority of the tech workforce in the Valley” in 2010; and one third of Valley startups “are founded by Indian Americans.” In addition, Mexico, Texas, and Arizona rank among the top ten sources of Silicon Valley talent, Bloomberg claims.

European MOOCs Scoreboard

European MOOCs Scoreboard | dataInnovation | Scoop.it

The aim of this scoreboard is to highlight the huge potential that European institutions have in the world of MOOCs and to help visualize this potential by compiling the existing European-provided MOOCs available on different open websites.

luiy's curator insight, June 8, 2:21 PM

How we created our MOOC database

When we first started preparing to launch Open Education Europa, we attempted to make contact with every higher education institution in Europe, asking to whether or not they offered any MOOCs or other open educational resources. Hundreds of institutions answered us, and with the information they provided we started populating our database. Then we went to the websites of the institutions who had not responded and searched for publicly available MOOCs, which we also added to the database. Finally, we cross-checked with other MOOC providers and aggregators such as iversity and OpenupEd.

Updating the scoreboard

On an ongoing basis, we monitor for new MOOCs by using Google alerts, RSS feeds, and manual searches. The institutions we have contact with update us when they have new courses. We also check the MOOC providers and aggregators every month to see what’s new. As soon as we find a new MOOC online, we add it to our database. That means that some MOOCs are counted in the scoreboard before the start date of the course.

By the way, if you happen to know about a secret stash of MOOCs that aren’t included in our database, please tip us off!

Data Virtualization for Big Data Analytics | SmartData Collective

Data Virtualization for Big Data Analytics | SmartData Collective | dataInnovation | Scoop.it
Analyzing big data is now an important part of business operations, and it requires significant time and resources to better understand and apply the solutions that big data offers. One developing technology that is greatly simplifying this process is virtualization, specifically data virtualization, which is allowing businesses in increase their value while turning big data analytics into an important enterprise tool.
Fàtima Galan's insight:

"data virtualization is a data integration approach allowing an application to retrieve and manipulate data without needing to know how the data is stored or formatted.......

In essence, data virtualization simplifies the access to the data while also simplifying the appearance of that same data. "

What is ‘open development’?

Open Development sits at the intersection of the ‘open’ movement, and international development. This could take the form of looking at how open data can affect decisions made within international development; open access to research materials; or opening up the ways we work, for example by being more inclusive, to name just a few examples. If you want to find out more about open development, join the Open Development mailing list, where a wide range of topics within Open Development are discussed. It’s open to everyone to join!

BY ERIN MEYER. To help managers negotiate this complexity I have developed a tool called the Culture Map. It plots culture on eight scales that apply to the most common challenges managers face. By comparing the relative position of one culture to another on each scale, a manager can decode how culture influences day-to-day collaboration. Try the pairs illustrated in this exhibit to see how the map can help. Many other culture pairs are available in my new book The Culture Map.

Accessing government data from the source is frustrating. If you've done it, or at least tried to, you know the pain that is oddly formatted files, search that doesn't work, and annotation that tells you nothing about the data in front of you.

The most frustrating part of the process is knowing how useful the data could be if only it were shared more simply.

Alluvial diagrams are a type of flow diagram that  have traditionally been used to visually show changes in network structures over time. Density Design has included Alluvial Diagrams in their RAW online visualization tool and explored its use to show “relations between dimensions of categorical data.”

RAW is such a wonderfully easy tool to use that I wanted to explore the Alluvial diagram functionality with a few different data sets to see how the visualizations would come out.
