How Semantic Web Tech Can Make Big Data Smarter

Over the past few years, major enterprises have shown interest in combining semantic web technology with big data for added value. Let's take a look at what enterprises are seeking and why they think semantic web can make big data smarter. Topic: Featured Articles.
Fàtima Galan's insight:

* Provides end-users increased ability to self-manage data from varied sources
* Addresses varying user needs and changing business environments
* Manages terminology, concepts and relationships while connecting diverse data from varied data sources
As you create a semantic layer over your big data initiative, be sure to include the following elements:
1. Flexible, universal data model based on industry standards
2. Use of semantic RDF standards to make the data “self-describing”
3. Graph representation and management of data
4. Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) infrastructure
5. Post-ingestion data characterization

Turn Data Into Knowledge

Turn Data Into Knowledge | dataInnovation | Scoop.it
Every day we face challenges – from the personal, such as the quickest way to get to work, or what we should eat, to global ones like climate change and how to sustainably feed and educate seven billion people on this planet, writes Rufus Pollock, Founder, Open Knowledge

At Open Knowledge we believe that opening up data – and turning that data into insight – can be crucial to addressing these challenges, and building a society in which is everyone – not just the few – are empowered with the knowledge they need to understand and effect change.

Via Irina Radchenko
Fàtima Galan's insight:

"Data is everywhere and we commonly talk of ‘digital economies’ now, of a ‘networked society’. But making sense of data – turning it into knowledge if you like – and then using it wisely, is still one of the greatest challenges we face as a global and increasingly interlinked society.

...

Reuse and redistribution: the data must be provided under terms that permit reuse and redistribution including the intermixing with other datasets. The data must be machine-readable.

...

Personal data should never be ‘open’ and freely accessible to everyone. Rather, we strongly believe that each of us should control our personal data – both to have access to it and to know (and decide) how it is used.

...

With digital technology – from mobiles to the Internet – increasingly everywhere, we are seeing a data revolution. We are living this revolution both in the amount of data available and in our ability to use, and share, that data. And it is changing everything we do – from how we travel home from work to how scientists do research, to how governments set policy.

In Europe, Taking Smart Cities to the People - Urban Land Magazine | dataInnovation | Scoop.it

Data from “Smart Citizen” trials can guide government decisions on carbon, resources, planning, and resilience.

The world’s first truly “smart city” may not yet exist, but for U.K. digital innovation lab FutureEverything, the concept is already ripe for reinvention.

Much like the technology that has allowed policy makers to envision the urban environment as better planned, more efficient, and intelligent, the definition of what smart city actually means is undergoing rapid change. And Drew Hemment, chief executive officer of FutureEverything, a nonprofit creative community-interest company based in Manchester, England, is just one of the digital innovators helping European cities understand the implications. ...

Via Rob Kitchin
Fàtima Galan's insight:

" Manchester is now the third European city after Barcelona and Amsterdam to try the Smart Citizen project. It is a grass-roots digital initiative that provides decentralized open-data platforms and tools—available to anyone—to record their real-time interactions with their surroundings and provide critical data sets that will help define urban needs."

Semantic SOA makes Sense! - DATAVERSITY

Semantic SOA makes Sense! - DATAVERSITY | dataInnovation | Scoop.it
by Dave Duggal. While it’s no longer trendy to talk about Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) due to limited initial results, it is implicitly the architectural-style of our age.
Fàtima Galan's insight:

" Semantic SOA, interfaces are expressed in ontologies, which provide a common data model for humans and machines to interpret their meaning. By making data a first-class citizen of a SOA, we can finally move from one-off syntactic integration to automated interoperability."

The above examples describe a wide range of geographical and geotemporal storytelling models, often based around quite simple data files containing information about individual events. Many of the tools make a strong use of image files as pat of the display. it may be interesting to complete a more detailed review that describes the exact data models used by each of the techniques, with a view to identifying a generic data model that could be used by each of the different models, or transformed into the distinct data representations supported by each of the separate tools.

Who Needs Open Data for the Extractive Industries? | Natural Resource Governance Institute

Fàtima Galan's insight:

"Efforts like the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, and more recently disclosure legislation in the US and EU, have increasingly made it a part of "responsible business" for companies and governments to be open and transparent about their financial dealings in oil, gas and mining. However, revealing payment data alone achieves little, especially when it has been locked up in PDFs, or aggregated and anonymized. It runs the risk of further limitations if unaccompanied by openness about the deals that have been signed. Governments and citizens alike need to know what happens to the money after it reaches the country's treasury. Following the money is becoming an important concern in resource-rich countries, to ensure that money from oil, gas and mining is transformed into increased revenues for the government, into open and effective budgeting, and ultimately into sustainable development that benefits all citizens."

Data Virtualization for Big Data Analytics | SmartData Collective

Data Virtualization for Big Data Analytics | SmartData Collective | dataInnovation | Scoop.it
Analyzing big data is now an important part of business operations, and it requires significant time and resources to better understand and apply the solutions that big data offers. One developing technology that is greatly simplifying this process is virtualization, specifically data virtualization, which is allowing businesses in increase their value while turning big data analytics into an important enterprise tool.
Fàtima Galan's insight:

"data virtualization is a data integration approach allowing an application to retrieve and manipulate data without needing to know how the data is stored or formatted.......

In essence, data virtualization simplifies the access to the data while also simplifying the appearance of that same data. "

Open Definition v2.0 Released – Major Update of Essential Standard for Open Data and Open Content | Open Knowledge Foundation Blog

Open Definition v2.0 Released – Major Update of Essential Standard for Open Data and Open Content | Open Knowledge Foundation Blog | dataInnovation | Scoop.it

Today Open Knowledge and the Open Definition Advisory Council are pleased to announce the release of version 2.0 of the Open Definition. The Definition “sets out principles that define openness in relation to data and content” and plays a key role in supporting the growing open data ecosystem.

Via Irina Radchenko
Fàtima Galan's insight:

Open Data " benefits are at significant risk both from quality problems such as “open-washing” (non-open data being passed off as open) and from fragmentation of the open data ecosystem due to incompatibility between the growing number of “open” licenses.

The Open Definition eliminates these risks and ensures we realize the full benefits of open by guaranteeing quality and preventing incompatibility.See this recent post for more about why the Open Definition is so important.

French Startup Sépage Says the Future of the Web is Semantic - Semanticweb.com

French Startup Sépage Says the Future of the Web is Semantic - Semanticweb.com | dataInnovation | Scoop.it
Fàtima Galan's insight:

"Websites like Amazon already have recommendatory systems based on statistics (‘Users who bought this also bought…’). This type of approach works, but has the disadvantage of providing converging recommendations. For instance, if you buy a Star Wars DVD, the recommendations will probably be Star Wars Episode two and three. Now, with a semantic recommendation approach, the algorithm would search the graphs and find out, for instance, that Star Wars was inspired by Isaac Asimov’s Foundation books, or other similar science fiction movies. Much more inspiring. And inspiration can be very valuable.”"

Evaluating sentiment in financial news articles

Evaluating sentiment in financial news articles | dataInnovation | Scoop.it

Can the choice of words and tone used by the authors of financial news articles correlate to measurable stock price movements? If so, can the magnitude of price movement be predicted using these same variables? We investigate these questions using the Arizona Financial Text (AZFinText) system, a financial news article prediction system, and pair it with a sentiment analysis tool. Through our analysis, we found that subjective news articles were easier to predict in price direction (59.0% versus 50.0% of chance alone) and using a simple trading engine, subjective articles garnered a 3.30% return. Looking further into the role of author tone in financial news articles, we found that articles with a negative sentiment were easiest to predict in price direction (50.9% versus 50.0% of chance alone) and a 3.04% trading return. Investigating negative sentiment further, we found that our system was able to predict price decreases in articles of a positive sentiment 53.5% of the time, and price increases in articles of a negative sentiment 52.4% of the time. We believe that perhaps this result can be attributable to market traders behaving in a contrarian manner, e.g., see good news, sell; see bad news, buy.
