Open for business - open data gets serious

Open data for business is suddenly the rage. The Economist calls it the new goldmine, the new open data policyreleased by the US government explicitly links open data with 'entrepreneurship and economic growth', a Capgemini report recently valued the impact of open data on the EU27 economy at 32 billion Euros in 2010, other estimates put the potential of open data in Europe at 180 billion a year, McKinsey valued health data alone at $350 billion annually - the numbers are eye-popping and 'no one has a clue what breakthroughs open data will allow'. The conversation around open data has definitely shifted beyond transparency, accountability, and civic engagement.

There are a lot of secrets around Palantir, and probably you would not expect anything different from a company that has received funding from CIA (actually Q-Tel, CIA's venture capital arm).

What is known is that its data-processing software is being used to fight terror and catch financial criminals.

Palantir is now raising $500 million at a valuation of $20 billion, surpassed only by Uber ($50 billion) and Airbnb ($24 billion).

I say it's time to merge sharing economy and data science!

How Self Service Analytics and Rules Engines are Crushing Big Data | dataInnovation | Scoop.it

Big data has ruled the tech industry for a half-decade, but this is all set to change in 2015 with the advent of cloud data.

Fàtima Galan's insight:

"Big data takes time to sort through and analyze.

Cloud data is immediate and happens in the background using the tremendous resources of cloud servers. "

"Data scientists are trained and valuable assets to large corporations that work with massive amounts of data.

Cloud data will provide a robust and automated mechanism for the most common analytics tasks required of businesses.

However, data scientists continue to grapple with the issue of making sense of the data created by businesses."

How MIT Visualizes Supply Chain Risk | #SNA #predictive

How MIT Visualizes Supply Chain Risk | #SNA #predictive | dataInnovation | Scoop.it
MIT Supply Chain Management Director Bruce Arntzen discusses risk visualization and Sourcemap [Video]

How does a company keep tabs on thousands of suppliers? That’s the question Bruce Arntzen tried to answer when he started the Hi-Viz Research Project. As Executive Director of MIT’s Supply Chain Management Program, Arntzen works with corporations to find innovative solutions to supply chain problems. The idea for the Hi-Viz project came during a 2011 meeting of the Supply Chain Risk Leadership Council. A survey of attendees listed Supply Chain Visibility as the top concern. Why? With thousands of suppliers and sub-suppliers, it can be very time-consuming to find the weakest link in a supply chain. Arntzen’s solution: an automatic visualization of the end-to-end supply chain where the weakest links could be seen in real time. Watch his interview to learn how MIT and Sourcemap developed the first automated risk visualization [more details below the fold].

In 2015, the Hi-Viz project is partnering with actuarial data providers to provide predictive risk analytics. Sourcemap is making available inventory risk mapping as part of its enterprise software-as-a-service. Want to get involved? Learn more about the Hi-Viz project, or contact Sourcemap for a demo.
