EXCLUSIVE: Former Arte Cinema chief also developing interactive film geo-location App Cinema City.

Former Arte Cinema chief Michel Reilhac, who left the Franco-German broadcaster last November to focus on his transmedia interests, has announced his first major project: a multi-platform work exploring the world of the high endurance sport ultra-trailing.

“It’s a personal project which I’ve been writing for some two years,” explains Reilhac, who has reactivated his production company Mélange, which was mothballed during his time at Arte, and now defines himself as an auteur and transmedia consultant and producer.

Provisionally entitled Ultra-trail, the work draws inspiration from the world of ultra-trailing, an increasingly popular sport consisting of 150 to 200-kilometre marathons, such as the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc and Grand Canyon Ultra Marathon, in which participants run for some 40 hours non-stop..."

The world after Big Data: What the digital revolution means for us

The world after Big Data: What the digital revolution means for us | Database-Software Cinema: Cinema Rebooted | Scoop.it
Never before were politicians, business leaders, and scientists more urgently needed to master the challenges ahead of us. We are in the middle of a third industrial revolution. While we see the symptoms, such as the financial and economic crisis, cybercrime and cyberwar, we haven't understood the implications well. But at the end of this socio-economic transformation, we will live in a digital society. This comes with breath-taking opportunities and challenges, as they occur only every 100 years. http://futurict.blogspot.mx/2014/05/the-world-after-big-data-what-digital.html See also What's the Next Big Thing after Big Data? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5Y76UB080M&list=UUYrlsSzinJN42rKmFlOOYxA

The New Digital Storytelling Series: Caspar Sonnen

Just like photography didn’t replace painting, the digital revolution and interactive storytelling didn’t replace documentary cinema or the need for great documentary storytellers. But at the same time, the Internet is not just another television pipe and we’ve entered a new golden age of documentary innovation.

A New Mythology. The Internet is the Next Great Story

A New Mythology. The Internet is the Next Great Story | Database-Software Cinema: Cinema Rebooted | Scoop.it

Storytelling via the Internet needs a better name.

"Before climbing onto the project, Hollow’s producer Nathaniel Hansenand I had for a couple years asked ourselves a question, roughly:

is it even possible to produce interactive online cinematic content that maintains strong narrative and is as engaging as traditional forms of media?

Our assumption was that “interactive storytelling” on the web is like the wild west of non-fiction filmmaking, with very few rules, artists working to stake their claim, and unlimited virtual land up for grabs.

Yes, the technology is young, but it’s also a blank canvas, with endless possibilities. Further, because the Internet connects both individuals and technology across time and space, there’s a contextualized “hyper” element that no other medium can employ as cosmically among disparate communities and storytellers."

Enormous budgets, huge opening day sales, A-list actors, and unique, gripping narratives. Games have come a long way, and it may well be time to consider the console experience a form of interactive cinema.

Quote "

Yes, a  film is almost certainly going to occur, and the verdict is still out whether or not filmmakers have finally learned to give game-to-film adaptations the proper respect and deference they deserve. The upcoming  films will be solid barometers to measure that question.

Regardless of the answer, it feels safe to say at this point in the existence of games as art, that even if these and other adaptations fail in theaters, their continued dominance on our television and laptop screens is a testament to their cinematic value.

Games like Grand Theft Auto V may very well be spoken of and debated for their narrative value by film lovers alongside contemplations of Taxi Driver and Citizen Kane in the not so distant future."

GTA V is quite an amazing game. The characterization and dialogue is fantastic - as well as the gameplay of course.

The Symbiotic Web (Frontend London, Nov 2013)

Somewhat on the late, here is the presentation on The Symbiotic Web I gave at Frontend London last November.

Have you ever wondered: is the Web a platform for Information or for Applications? Is one the “correct Web” and the other a perversion of its true purpose?

Answering this question takes us back to the roots of the Web, namely the two key concepts of URIs and links. They are what truly make the power of the Web, alongside the descriptive HTML format, for both humans and machines that use it. For humans, we tend to add visual ornaments through the presentation layer (CSS), whereas we feed machines extra information through the semantic layer (e.g. Schema.org, micro-formats, etc).
