Symbolic regression of generative network models

Symbolic regression of generative network models | Data Visualization & Open data | Scoop.it
Networks are a powerful abstraction with applicability to a variety of scientific fields. Models explaining their morphology and growth processes permit a wide range of phenomena to be more systematically analysed and understood. At the same time, creating such models is often challenging and requires insights that may be counter-intuitive. Yet there currently exists no general method to arrive at better models. We have developed an approach to automatically detect realistic decentralised network growth models from empirical data, employing a machine learning technique inspired by natural selection and defining a unified formalism to describe such models as computer programs. As the proposed method is completely general and does not assume any pre-existing models, it can be applied “out of the box” to any given network. To validate our approach empirically, we systematically rediscover pre-defined growth laws underlying several canonical network generation models and credible laws for diverse real-world networks. We were able to find programs that are simple enough to lead to an actual understanding of the mechanisms proposed, namely for a simple brain and a social network.Symbolic regression of generative network models • Telmo Menezes & Camille RothScientific Reports 4, Article number: 6284 http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/srep06284See Also: https://github.com/telmomenezes/synthetic

Open data for accountable governance: Is data literacy the key to citizen engagement? | Data Visualization & Open data | Scoop.it
How can technology connect citizens with governments, and how can we foster, harness, and sustain the citizen engagement that is so essential to anti-corruption efforts? UNDP has worked on a number of projects that use technology to make it easier for citizens to report corruption to authorities: Serbia’s SMS corruption reporting in the health sectorMontenegro’s ‘be responsible app’Kosovo’s online corruption reporting site kallxo.comThese projects are showing some promising results, and provide insights into how a more participatory, interactive government could develop. At the heart of the projects is the ability to use citizen generated data to identify and report problems for governments to address.

Various Artists - Northern Soul: The Film Soundtrack - Drowned In Sound

Various Artists - Northern Soul: The Film Soundtrack - Drowned In Sound | Data Visualization & Open data | Scoop.it
Northern soul was to the late Sixties what punk rock was ten years later. A truly underground phenomenon, perhaps the first. Certainly the first to fully embrace working class culture. Oddly enough, the phrase 'northern soul' was first coined by the owner of a London-based record store because a lot of his customers tended to come from the Midlands and up north in search of rare American soul 7-inches, many of them imports and almost every one of them released independently.

The Visual Signature of Your City

The Visual Signature of Your City | Data Visualization & Open data | Scoop.it
Social-media platforms like FourSquare and Twitter have been a boon for sociologists and geographers who now have entirely new ways of tracking how we move through cities, where we go, who we are, and even what we think of the world around us. There is one set of social-media platforms, however, that has been tougher to crack for useful data than others: photo-sharing sites. Their metadata can illustrate where people take photos, and how active they are. But on the whole, how do you aggregate useful data about entire cities and the differences between them from the content of millions of photos on a site like Instagram? Researchers have been working on this for the past year, and they've just posted some of the initial results from their Phototrails project here. The project is less an exploration of a specific research question, and more a first foray into what we might learn by treating user-generated photography as another source of Big Data.

The Science Of Sound Gets Visualized In This A/V Experiment | Nicolas Bernier interview

The Science Of Sound Gets Visualized In This A/V Experiment | Nicolas Bernier interview | Data Visualization & Open data | Scoop.it
Yesterday, Montreal-based sound artist, performer and composer Nicolas Bernier presented the third and last of frequencies, a series of artistic experimentations that focus on groundbreaking acoustic research at the crossroads between science, light, and sound-generating processes. Entitled frequencies (light quanta), the final piece in Bernier's project is a dynamic data visualization that blurs the boundaries among infinity, photon physical laws, electromagnetic forces, and cutting-edge audio-visual creative processes. Consisting of a unique combination of a sonic micro-particle soundtrack playing alongside an auto-generative animation illuminated by hundreds of quantum physics-inspired visuals laser printed on acrylic panels, frequencies (light quanta) is a 3D audiovisual installation that allows viewers to explore the infinitesimal through a granular-synthesized physical space.

10 Tools to Create Beautiful Infographics and Visualize Data - noupe | Data Visualization & Open data | Scoop.it
They used to say content is king. But what really makes up content? Gone are the days when “content” meant purely text. Today, if you want to engage and enchant your customers, your content must have some visual cues. The human brain processes visual information much quicker than text. And with web 2.0 visuals like infographics, you can convey complex, boring data in a meaningful manner. Although infographics make things simpler, it can be time-consuming to create them. Here is a list of my top 10 tools to create your own beautiful infographics and more visual content (no Photoshop required!).
