Networks are a powerful abstraction with applicability to a variety of scientific fields. Models explaining their morphology and growth processes permit a wide range of phenomena to be more systematically analysed and understood. At the same time, creating such models is often challenging and requires insights that may be counter-intuitive. Yet there currently exists no general method to arrive at better models. We have developed an approach to automatically detect realistic decentralised network growth models from empirical data, employing a machine learning technique inspired by natural selection and defining a unified formalism to describe such models as computer programs. As the proposed method is completely general and does not assume any pre-existing models, it can be applied “out of the box” to any given network. To validate our approach empirically, we systematically rediscover pre-defined growth laws underlying several canonical network generation models and credible laws for diverse real-world networks. How can technology connect citizens with governments, and how can we foster, harness, and sustain the citizen engagement that is so essential to anti-corruption efforts? UNDP has worked on a number of projects that use technology to make it easier for citizens to report corruption to authorities: Serbia’s SMS corruption reporting in the health sectorMontenegro’s ‘be responsible app’Kosovo’s online corruption reporting site kallxo.comThese projects are showing some promising results, and provide insights into how a more participatory, interactive government could develop. Social-media platforms like FourSquare and Twitter have been a boon for sociologists and geographers who now have entirely new ways of tracking how we move through cities, where we go, who we are, and even what we think of the world around us. There is one set of social-media platforms, however, that has been tougher to crack for useful data than others: photo-sharing sites. Their metadata can illustrate where people take photos, and how active they are. But on the whole, how do you aggregate useful data about entire cities and the differences between them from the content of millions of photos on a site like Instagram? Researchers have been working on this for the past year, and they've just posted some of the initial results from their Phototrails project here.The project is less an exploration of a specific research question, and more a first foray into what we might learn by treating user-generated photography as another source of Big Data.

Yesterday, Montreal-based sound artist, performer and composer Nicolas Bernier presented the third and last of frequencies, a series of artistic experimentations that focus on groundbreaking acoustic research at the crossroads between science, light, and sound-generating processes. Entitled frequencies (light quanta), the final piece in Bernier's project is a dynamic data visualization that blurs the boundaries among infinity, photon physical laws, electromagnetic forces, and cutting-edge audio-visual creative processes. Consisting of a unique combination of a sonic micro-particle soundtrack playing alongside an auto-generative animation illuminated by hundreds of quantum physics-inspired visuals laser printed on acrylic panels, frequencies (light quanta) is a 3D audiovisual installation that allows viewers to explore the infinitesimal through a granular-synthesized physical space.
