The Business Problem with Big Data Analytics - Lens360

The Business Problem with Big Data Analytics - Lens360 | Data Nerd's Corner | Scoop.it
What is Happening?           Recent software analyst and IT media reports, including insights from a recent SAP Americas User Group (ASUG) survey, suggest that SAP’s HANA Big Data service / platform is not yet seen by a majority of ASUG members as benefiting their business (relative to the implementation cost of implementing), or driving enough revenue …
Carla Gentry CSPO's insight:

The big data innovation came from organizations that build products that required big data skills to create the value inherent in the product. And these skills where expensive, but since there was a direct relationship between investment and revenue growth, it was easy to justify the investment. Most enterprise IT, however, is managed as a cost center. That creates two problems: 1- investments for long term value creation can only be introduced top-down, and 2- it shifts the enterprise IT team's focus from value creation to cost reduction.

Without a good engine, the driver cannot win the race. On the other hand, a top-of-the-line machine will collect dust unless a capable individual can run it.

Big Data: Big Business or Big Brother?

Big Data: Big Business or Big Brother? | Data Nerd's Corner | Scoop.it
There is a crazy amount of information floating around the world today, thanks to the marvel of ubiquitous data-driven technology. Stored information has doubled every 40 months since the 1980s. Since 2012, 2.5 exabytes (that's 10 million with 28 more zeroes) of data is created every day, according to an IBM study in 2013.
Carla Gentry CSPO's insight:

Big Data for media and advertising

The capacity to measure and study Big Data is enabling both conventional and digital advertisers to dissect consumer patterns more effectively and identify emerging trends faster and more accurately.

It is opening up new relationships with untapped markets and revitalising existing ones. If well executed, a strategy created using this information offers a distinct competitive advantage for any savvy advertiser or media marketer.

Personalised and closely targeted advertising, developed according to the figures garnered from Big Data, has completely turned the marketing philosophies of the past upside down.

Types and Uses of Predictive Analytics, What they are and Where You Can Put Them to Work

Types and Uses of Predictive Analytics, What they are and Where You Can Put Them to Work | Data Nerd's Corner | Scoop.it
Summary: Gartner says that predictive analytics is a mature technology yet only one company in eight is currently utilizing this ability to predict the future…
Carla Gentry CSPO's insight:

The real value however was that we were able to score each person in the sample with a value from 1 to 100 based on their likelihood to buy.  The output of a scoring model is a few lines of computer code that can then be used to score the prospects that have not yet been promoted.  Based on the score we found that those with a score over about 70 were sufficiently likely to buy that the economics of the promotion resulted in a profit, and we avoided incurring the cost of promotion to those below 70 who if we had sent the costly promotional offer would have resulted in a financial loss.  This kind of model is called a ‘lift model’ and is at the core of almost all behavioral predictive models. #DataScienceCtrl

3 Ways Startups Can Use Big Data to Reduce Waste | Data Nerd's Corner | Scoop.it

Carla Gentry CSPO's insight:

Big data is at its best when tracking customers and potential customers. Generally, this is a very difficult area for small businesses. Either they don’t invest as much as they would like to, or they invest more than they should, but they hope to reap the rewards. Unfortunately, both ways lead to too much waste. If companies don’t invest enough, they miss a big opportunity to bring in new consumers and new revenue. If they invest a lot but don’t do it effectively, then they’re significantly limiting future growth. Big data helps companies gauge how much they should be investing in marketing and where that marketing money should be spent. Companies can be much more precise in who they target and what type of advertising they use. It’s extremely effective at monitoring social media, too, which is a great, cheap way to market.

The Fishing Expedition - Let’s Analyze Human Resources Data

Basic business awareness leads most firms to the conclusion that (a) employees are their largest expense, and (b) employee behavior is a significant driver of corporate success or failure. Other human behavior domains (customer analytics, patient analytics, voter analytics) continue to demonstrate clear ROI from using predictive analytics, and it is natural for employers to ask how the practice can be applied to employees and job candidates for similar ROI.  #DataScienceCtrl

The hunt for your strategic blind spots: Assign data scientists to the case

The hunt for your strategic blind spots: Assign data scientists to the case | Data Nerd's Corner | Scoop.it
When considering where your company resides on the competitive landscape, data scientists are invaluable for making you aware of your strategic blind spots.
Carla Gentry CSPO's insight:

Focusing your data science team in the direction of your competition is a great way to uncover blind spots. Although your competition has corporate firewalls that you won't have access to, it's very difficult to operate in a vacuum. Companies interface with customers, suppliers, and government agencies. Furthermore, they're probably conducting analyses on their competition (including you), and it's very hard to make a move without leaving a digital trail of where you've been and what you're up to. This is just the kind of fodder your data scientists love to graze on.

SAP Users Skeptical Big Data is Worth the Costs, Survey Shows

SAP Users Skeptical Big Data is Worth the Costs, Survey Shows | Data Nerd's Corner | Scoop.it
A survey shows that three-fourths of SAP customers haven't purchased SAP HANA products because they can’t identify a business case to justify costs.
Carla Gentry CSPO's insight:

Guptill cites several examples that are quite troubling. For instance, he noes that HR divisions have the most regulated data, but Saugatuck’s experiences shows many companies can’t easily find or manage that data. He also cites SuperValu, which revealed after a security breach that it didn’t even know what customer data it possessed.

That’s why Guptill believes the “killer use case” for Big Data analytics will only come after companies have improved their integration with cloud-based business management software and services. SAP and other vendors know this, he writes, but for now they face an uphill battle in winning over adopters:

Finally, researchers need improved tools for managing, interpreting and sharing their data. Today most of them have better software at home for handling their music or photo collections than they have in the laboratory for doing the same with their research data. The reasons why are not are hard to see: there are around 7 million researchers in the world, making them about 0.1% of the human population. From the point of view of a big software company they therefore represent a relatively insignificant niche. But economically and culturally they are disproportionately important and for all our sakes they deserve better.

Congressional staffers from both sides of the aisle came to Stanford last week for a cybersecurity boot camp. They heard from Google's Eric Schmidt that security problems are serious, but can be reduced with better encryption of communications.
Carla Gentry CSPO's insight:

Schmidt, in response to a question from Rice about classes students should take, noted that 75 percent of Stanford students take at least one computer science course.  He talked about the importance of data science – a topic Google scientists know well.  He pointed out that President Obama's campaign organization made good use of data science.

Voice recognition, text recognition and face recognition by cameras and computers have become very good, but pose a privacy threat, Schmidt said. Placing cameras everywhere would drastically reduce crime, he said, but at the cost of privacy.

Carla Gentry CSPO's insight:

Rizzo believes that the practical elements around the decision-making process often revolve around whether the decision-maker has the right data to make the right decisions. But what often happens is that they are focusing on the amount of data and not whether the information they have is enough to infer decisions on.

“The three Vs of data examine its volume, variety, and velocity. At KPMG, we also talk about two additional Vs; the veracity (or integrity) of data, and the value that it provides the business. All these elements need to be used in conjunction to help decision-makers respond to a specific business problem they need to solve.”

In this TED Talk, data scientist John Wilbanks discusses how strict privacy laws inhibit scientific research efforts, and asks us to imagine what potential discoveries could result from a giant pool of freely available anonymized health and genomic data. Wilbanks says that if we’re willing to reach back and grab the dust off our “digital exhaust,” or the enormous volumes of data that are created from our digital footprints in health care and elsewhere, we can use it to build something together — a commons to serve the common good. It’s why he started Sage Bionetworks, which he believes is “the world’s first fully digital, fully self-contributed, unlimited in scope, global in participation, ethically approved clinical research study.” Through its own version of informed consent, Sage Bionetworks is using the design principles of the commons and translating it to health data that can create something great for the benefit of all.
