Why Businesses Need To Shift Data Analysis From The Centre To The Front Line

Why Businesses Need To Shift Data Analysis From The Centre To The Front Line | Data Nerd's Corner | Scoop.it
Some of this, of course, can be put down to the old adage that the information coming out is only as good as the figures put in. Even in this age of enormous computer power, the human factor is of vital importance. But also significant is how the data is analysed. Businesses are increasingly complex and just looking at one sort of data or figures from one area of the business is unlikely to be sufficient to provide the insights required to make properly informed and potentially transformational decisions. In short, they need to look beyond one set of data and see how it relates to data in other areas or how it may have been influenced by an earlier decision.

Need for Speed: Parallelizing Corporate Data

Need for Speed: Parallelizing Corporate Data | Data Nerd's Corner | Scoop.it
Normalizing data entails collecting knowledge (i.e. business rules) from many sources, adjudicating it, putting it into executable computer code, running the computer code with multiple data sources and then analyzing the results. Done well this will lead to new insights that are fed back into the business rules and code to produce new results. At some point, the results are good enough to use to feed business products, applications, reports, and other computational tools for uses as varied as regulatory reports, executive analytics, marketing and customer assessments, and system designs.

How Tracking Analytics Can Improve Content Marketing

How Tracking Analytics Can Improve Content Marketing | Data Nerd's Corner | Scoop.it
This is a tactic that took us a while to implement, and I wish we’d started using it from day one. For every piece of internal content our digital marketers share, they must now create a unique URL. These URLs look something like “http://website.com/greatcontent/?tid=TWT-bi-BP$-CG.” Here’s what that means:
Carla Gentry CSPO's insight:

As you can see, this type of information can help you prioritize the networks with the highest ROI, identify which team members regularly draw in the most visitors or leads, and give you a benchmark for how effective a given network’s paid advertisements are. While most social platforms provide analytics covering the number of “clicks” or “impressions”, I’m guessing the number you actually care about is conversions. Tracking which social network visitors arrived from in the URL allows you to see which ones ultimated converted, and which network you need to invest more resources in.

A really great programmer can jump between languages relatively easily. The best programmers are not IT people, they’re always business people that have gone over and grabbed a software tool to solve a business problem. Data scientists aren’t born every day. I think they’re born, not bred. Having the curiosity is really the biggest character trait you can have. It’s being an inductive reasoner instead of a deductive reasoner.

CEO Says Big Data Drives Towing Business Forward

CEO Says Big Data Drives Towing Business Forward | Data Nerd's Corner | Scoop.it
Has technology innovation created any challenges for your role as CEO? As these new technologies come out, everybody wants to try everything, so we need a robust process to boil the options down to what will have maximum impact on our customers. It's a good problem when you have too many great ideas, but I find myself saying "no" a lot more often.

We are a big company, and our technology has to work 24/7. If our systems are down, we leave our customer stranded, so we cannot get too close to the bleeding edge.

Our approach is to pick a client or call center team to try out a new technology and then make decisions about how to scale. I'd rather make a lot of small bets before making one large bet.

How 35 Canadian CIOs are sizing up big data and analytics issues

How 35 Canadian CIOs are sizing up big data and analytics issues | Data Nerd's Corner | Scoop.it
In some ways, this is the kind of thing that we’re discussing at the CIO Innovation Summit. To make sure we were developing the right kind of program, though, we conducted an informal survey with a group of 35 IT leaders from a cross-section of industries including manufacturing, health care, education and others. The results showed some interest in big data but a lot of sharp disagreement about the impact of analytics on hiring, skill sets, the management of information and the need to ensure the business was getting the proper benefit.

How the big-data revolution can help design ideal cities | Data Nerd's Corner | Scoop.it
There are sensors everywhere collecting data, unnoticed. Data on how you move through space – on foot, on bike, in a car, in public transit. How much water and electricity you use, and when; how much garbage you produce and where it goes. Data on things we haven’t yet imagined. And these reams and reams of information will allow us to not only understand the city better but improve it. This is the future of the city.

AllAnalytics - James M. Connolly - Data Scientist Recruitment: Myth Busted

AllAnalytics - James M. Connolly - Data Scientist Recruitment: Myth Busted | Data Nerd's Corner | Scoop.it
Yes, a few respondents report getting contacts on a daily basis, but the 100 emails and calls a day myth never made sense to me. Maybe it's just that there aren't enough IT recruiters in the world to justify it, or maybe it's because the job prospect would have to be plastering his or her email address in every code-sharing site, jobs board, and restroom in the civilized world. Maybe the 100-per-day figure originated with a data scientist who really wanted to squeeze the boss for a raise. Maybe someone should have questioned the data.
Carla Gentry CSPO's insight:

More than one third of respondents (about 36%) said recruiters contact them once a month. Even if you love your job, you can have a few bad days. So, feeling wanted now and then is a good thing. Weekly contacts (about 10% of respondents) probably are enough to get you thinking that there are greener pastures. Daily contacts, cited by almost 6% of you, might mean you're walking about with a "Have Family, Will Work for Food" sign.
