Drop Shipping for Ecommerce, Part 3: Suppliers vs. Retailers

Drop Shipping for Ecommerce, Part 3: Suppliers vs. Retailers | Data Nerd's Corner | Scoop.it
Retailers also experience a loss of control as they must now rely on their suppliers to ship orders in a timely and expert manner. A supplier’s failure to execute can lead to customer service nightmares, back orders, complicated returns processing, and branding problems with packaging and packing slips.

There are challenges for suppliers as well. Picking, packing, and shipping consumer orders is a much different process than shipping pallets or case packs to a retailer or distribution center. Drop shipping can require updates to warehousing, fulfillment, and invoicing systems, as well as changes to processes and channel policies. Plus, a degree of inventory risk will be shifted to the supplier

Ninety-two percent of executives say their big data projects are yielding results.

As examples of big data’s impact on business, the Accenture report cited a Japanese telecommunications firm that leveraged customer data from its wifi access points to target promising customers with mobile ads in realtime. In another instance, a British utilities company was able to take the realtime data acquired from sensors in water pipes to better anticipate equipment failure and respond faster to leaks and inclement weather events

Stop Governing Your Data - Start Leading Data Behaviors and Outcomes

Stop Governing Your Data - Start Leading Data Behaviors and Outcomes | Data Nerd's Corner | Scoop.it
Business data governance has uncovered the need to focus on the behaviors of data producers, managers and users rather than the data itself. The data simply reflects the habits of its participants, so improve their habits for its production and handling and it will improve.
Carla Gentry CSPO's insight:

You could use a compliance-based approach to drive actions without changing ongoing behaviors, something like a “golden clipboard” of checklists for policy compliance. However, a policy-based approach is self-limiting and very difficult to sustain because it doesn’t really change behaviors or expectations.

Why Does PayPal Care What People Think About Apple?

Why Does PayPal Care What People Think About Apple? | Data Nerd's Corner | Scoop.it
From the moment Apple revealed its mobile wallet to the world, PayPal has wasted little opportunity to take its share of digs at the product.
Carla Gentry CSPO's insight:

If Apple Pay works as advertised, benefiting from the perceived security of Touch ID, it could finally win many consumers over to mobile payments. But it's up to consumers to decide whether to forgive Apple for iCloud's role in the celebrity photo leaks. If PayPal is the more trustworthy service, it should go without saying.

Medical Calculators Use Big Data to Help Patients Make Choices

Medical Calculators Use Big Data to Help Patients Make Choices | Data Nerd's Corner | Scoop.it
Doctors are turning to clinical calculators that crunch big data to help patients make informed medical decisions. Cleveland Clinic's Michael Kattan has developed so-called "nomograms" that use statistical modeling to tailor predictions to individual patients.
Carla Gentry CSPO's insight:

But that one-size-fits-all approach doesn't take into account a patient's unique characteristics, such as age, gender, race, extent and type of disease and other health factors, says Michael Kattan, chairman of the department of quantitative health sciences at Cleveland Clinic's Lerner Research Institute. So doctors are turning to increasingly sophisticated calculators that can combine all these unique characteristics, compare them with the vast databases of similar cases and studies, and use them to predict probable outcomes depending on the treatment a patient chooses.

It is also why we are able to remain surprisingly ambivalent to things that should shock us a great deal – drone strikes that kill innocents, renegade soldiers murdering entire families in Afghanistan, or labeling the deaths of dozens of Palestinian children by Israeli missiles simply collateral damage.

Data products differentiate by the amount of support they need before they create ‘actionable insights’ out of the data. Read that sentence again! Predictions know the answer – no further need to investigate or choose

Home Depot's malware details hint its hackers weren't Target's

Home Depot's malware details hint its hackers weren't Target's | Data Nerd's Corner | Scoop.it
WASHINGTON — Home Depot Inc. was hacked with a malicious software program that plunders store registers while disguising itself as antivirus software, according to two security researchers.
Carla Gentry CSPO's insight:

POS stands for "point of sale" and in both cases, malware was designed to capture credit card numbers after customers swiped them at registers. Major differences between the two pieces of code from the Home Depot and Target cases include how and where the malware installs itself, how it interacts with the operating system, and how the software hides — or scrambles — credit card numbers as they sit on the company's network before they're exfiltrated, or sent outside the system. Also, the memory-scraping malware used against Target didn't mimic antivirus software.

And you should really understand what's happening to that data, and the companies — I think — should be very transparent.
