Social Media’s Mass Attention Myth

Social Media’s Mass Attention Myth | Data Nerd's Corner | Scoop.it
The gurus tell you that you need to build huge audiences, right? A contrarian view.
Carla Gentry CSPO's insight:

A few years ago I dreamed of becoming “famous” by interviewing the most successful people because I thought they would share my interviews. That didn’t happen. The audience only started to grow when I focused on how to make my content as valuable as possible for the people who were already there, even if there were only a few of them.  This is how audiences and readers turn into tribes and communities. I think we should abandon all of the following questions

New Data Show Faster Job Growth in States With Higher Minimum Wage | Data Nerd's Corner | Scoop.it
Findings could undermine the argument that raising the minimum wage hurts job growth
Carla Gentry CSPO's insight:

Some economists said that data was inconclusive and that it’s too early to say whether minimum wage hikes hurt job growth. The rate of job growth was the highest in North Dakota, where the local oil and gas boom has spurred the economy but there has been no minimum wage increase. “It’s too early to tell,” said Stan Veuger, a scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. “These states are very different along all kinds of dimensions.”

RelateIQ Buy Could Patch Salesforce's Analytics Gap

RelateIQ Buy Could Patch Salesforce's Analytics Gap | Data Nerd's Corner | Scoop.it
Salesforce's $390 million acquisition of RelateIQ this week strengthens the CRM giant's customer data analytics offerings and could boost its marketing suite, industry analysts told CMSWire. Salesforce Founder and CEO Marc Benioff (left) on Monday gobbled up the Palo Alto, Calif.-based provider that claims it's known for driving "relationship intelligence," rather than "relationship management." "Salesforce needed to deepen its analytics offerings significa Topic: Customer Experience.
Carla Gentry CSPO's insight:

"While Salesforce has done a great job with reporting to do real analytics, prediction, you have to go to Birst or Good Data in the cloud or take the data out of the cloud back into an operational data store like Teradata or Oracle or IBM or Microsoft," Wang Said. "This defeats the point of having it all in the cloud."

“It is about building a mountain with pebbles,” says Jim Manzi, the boss of Applied Predictive Technologies, which sells data-crunching software. Internet firms like Google and Amazon have built their entire businesses on the back of repeated incremental gains. For example, Google’s search algorithm is designed to learn from users: if slightly more people click on the ninth link of a given set of search results than one higher up, then the algorithm learns from this, and moves the lower item upwards. Amazon’s boss, Jeff Bezos, insists that all decisions in his company are based on statistical analyses. Every pixel on the company’s home page has had to justify its existence through repeated testing of alternative layouts, to identify the combination that maximises sales. Each individual change may make the product only a tiny bit better. But the cumulative effect over time can be big.
