BRAIN Initiative Challenges Researchers to Unlock Mysteries of Human Mind | The White House

BRAIN Initiative Challenges Researchers to Unlock Mysteries of Human Mind | The White House | Data Management Thread | Scoop.it

Today at the White House, President Obama unveiled the “BRAIN” Initiative—a bold new research effort to revolutionize our understanding of the human mind and uncover new ways to treat, prevent, and cure brain disorders like Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia, autism, epilepsy, and traumatic brain injury.

The BRAIN Initiative — short for Brain Research through Advancing InnovativeNeurotechnologies — builds on the President’s State of the Union call for historic investments in research and development to fuel the innovation, job creation, and economic growth that together create a thriving middle class.

The Initiative promises to accelerate the invention of new technologies that will help researchers produce real-time pictures of complex neural circuits and visualize the rapid-fire interactions of cells that occur at the speed of thought. Such cutting-edge capabilities, applied to both simple and complex systems, will open new doors to understanding how brain function is linked to human behavior and learning, and the mechanisms of brain disease.

"What are the differences between data science, data mining, machine learning, statistics, operations research, and so on?

Here I compare several analytic disciplines that overlap, to explain the differences and common denominators. Sometimes differences exist for nothing else other than historical reasons. Sometimes the differences are real and subtle. I also provide typical job titles, types of analyses, and industries traditionally attached to each discipline. Underlined domains are main sub-domains. It would be great if someone can add an historical perspective to my article."

Governing Enterprise Transformation with a New Style of Business Intelligence

Governing Enterprise Transformation with a New Style of Business Intelligence | Data Management Thread | Scoop.it

Page 210 of the book published by D. Appleton and Company circa 1865 reads: “[Sir Henry Furnese] maintained a complete and perfect train of business intelligence.” Thus, term “Business Intelligence” is centuries old, but remains alive and kicking even today. But in recent times, as demand for access to information increases, enterprises are being challenged to process unstructured (and vast amounts of) data from the Internet of Things– in real time, and on an industrial scale. Most existing business intelligence environments can provide analytics and reporting, but aren’t designed to deliver insight from new formats and higher volumes of data. For Business Intelligence to be effective going forward, enterprises must go through a transformation to glean a New Style of Business Intelligence with appropriate governance. Let’s see how.
