Map & Street View API in Excel

Map & Street View API in Excel | Data Management, Data Quality | Scoop.it

The demo combines 4 static street view images and 2 static (non-interactive) map images (road & satellite) into an Excel panorama view using Google's static MAP & Street View APIs.

The Google Static Map v2 API service creates a static (non-interactive) map based on URL parameters sent through a standard HTTP request and returns the map as an image, which you can be displayed in Excel.

In the same way, the Google Street View Image API creates a Street View panorama. The viewport is defined with URL parameters sent and is returned as a static image in Excel.

The Importance of Excel | Hacker News

Oz du Soleil's insight:

More commentary on Excel's fragility, strengths and warnings. There's a wonderful passage where they author describes how Excel rivals expensive complex softwares:

"a talented new guy comes on the team and notices what a bloated piece of crap this software is. He wonders why no one has written a little Excel sheet to get around it and REALLY get some work done..."

Excel can be as nimble or as bloated as the user wants. Ther user creates their own interface. It may be ugly but they can get it to work.

The missing piece, though, is a layer of internal checks and input controls. That's the conversation we need to have next.

Tech City firm storms spreadsheets to prevent 'London Whale' style losses - Telegraph

Tech City firm storms spreadsheets to prevent 'London Whale' style losses - Telegraph | Data Management, Data Quality | Scoop.it
British firm ClusterSeven has created technology to clean up the world’s spreadsheets and eliminate errors such as those that led to £3.8bn losses at JP Morgan.
Oz du Soleil's insight:

I love this article. It embraces the fact that spreadsheets are everywere and will be with us for the foreseeable future--warts and all.

The article touts a spreadsheet auditing firm as a solution but the main points are that we should stop wishing that Excel would go away, and that we've got to think very seriously about what we're doing with our spreadsheets.

-  How will we know if something in the spreadsheet is wrong or incomplete?

-  What are the consequences of something being awry?

-  Is our spreadsheet set up for easy troubleshooting when something has gone sideways?

Our data's a mess! What's the cost of data cleansing? A lot! And few people are both skilled at it and want to do it. It's like Kidnapping Cerberus.

Data cleaning is expensive and akin to capturing Cerberus. It's best--especially for small businesses to practice good Data Management before they're face with the expense of a massive data clean-up.

Marketing data: exploration vs. confirmation - Chief Marketing Technologist | Data Management, Data Quality | Scoop.it
There is tremendous excitement around data-driven marketing.
Oz du Soleil's insight:

Interesting ideas about data exploration vs. data confirmation. I don't like how the author divides data into big and small because of what he eventually gets to at the end: the context.

It depends on what you want from the data that determines if you're in an exploration or confirmation mode.

Excel Liberation.: Using jSon/javaScript like structures in VBA

Via brucemcpherson
more...
brucemcpherson's curator insight, March 25, 2013 1:27 AM

jSon /VBA functions have always been the most popular topic on the Excel Liberation site and forum. The interesting part about this though is not so much about parsing and stringifying jSon data (which after all is just a simple matter of decoding and formatting), but rather about what to do next. In javaScript, creating objects dynamically is probably its most powerful feature, but VBA doesn’t have anything like that natively. Here's how you can do it.

I'm always asked about making and printing labels in Excel. This is the closest I've seen and it's clearly a hack. It's a smart and effective hack. It's one way to avoid setting up a mail merge with Word.
