Creative coders, data artists, designers, and makers create experiments | GAFFTA

Creative coders, data artists, designers, and makers create experiments | GAFFTA | Data is Beautiful | Scoop.it
Gray Area Foundation for the Arts brings together the best creative coders, data artists, designers, and makers to create experiments that build social consciousness through digital culture.

A finding about Max/MSP/Jitter, applied to the creation of art and programming:

Programming can seem rather daunting when you’re a novice. Now, imagine programming for a person that considers their learning style much more conducive to visualizing a process versus seeing in code and plain text. Max/MSP/Jitter helps patch this gap for individuals seeking a dynamic toolset that allows mapping of code, and programming that enables processes to be charted and visualized. Max is predominantly used by musicians and visual artists interested in incorporating sound into immersive and interactive environments, and serves as a fantastic medium for anyone interested in creating music sets that are both dynamic and engaging.

Keep in mind this is data from over a year ago ...

"I saw the analysis when it was posted over a year ago but never got around to sharing it. It crossed my desktop again recently. The results still seem to apply."

"Twitter is still for the techies ... "

Not so sure I agree. Think techies have moved to GooglePlus. Would like to see Twitter v GooglePlus.

Ideas Illustrated » Visualizing English Word Origins

Ideas Illustrated » Visualizing English Word Origins | Data is Beautiful | Scoop.it

"I have been reading a book on the development of the English language recently and I’ve become fascinated with the idea of word etymology — the study of words and their origins ...

Using Douglas Harper’s online dictionary of etymology, I paired up words from various passages I found online with entries in the dictionary. For each word, I pulled out the first listed language of origin and then re-constructed the text with some additional HTML infrastructure. The HTML would allow me to associate each word (or word fragment) with a color, title, and hyperlink to a definition."

Network of data visualization references

Network of data visualization references | Data is Beautiful | Scoop.it

Developer Santiago Ortiz places Delicious tags for visualization references in a discovery context. There are two views. The first is a network view with tags and resources as nodes. A fisheye effect is used to zoom in on nodes and make the more readable. Mouse over a tag, and the labels for related resources get bigger, and likewise, mouse over a resource, and the related tags get bigger.

Network diagrams simplified | Kim Rees

Network diagrams simplified | Kim Rees | Data is Beautiful | Scoop.it

Network diagrams are notoriously messy. Even a small number of nodes can be overwhelmed by their chaotic placement and relationships. Cody Dunne of HCIL showed off his new work in simplifying these complex structures. In essence, he aggregates leaf nodes into a fan glyph that describes the underlying data in its size, arc, and color. Span nodes are similarly captured into crescent glyphs.

The result is an easy to read, high level look at the network. You can easily compare different sections of the network, understand areas that may have been occluded by the lines in a traditional diagram, and see relationships far more quickly.

I love the elegance and simplicity of Cody's work.

SeeSaw and the Visual Revolution: The Future of Twitter Chats? #ideachat 5/12

SeeSaw and the Visual Revolution: The Future of Twitter Chats? #ideachat 5/12 | Data is Beautiful | Scoop.it
In this video, Robert Moore gives us the scoop on Internet Media Labs' tool, "SeeSaw".

We are in the middle of a visual revolution and visual social platforms like Pinterest and Instagram are all the rage. With the new tool SeeSaw, all the pictures and videos shared on Twitter can be viewed simultaneously when searching a hashtag, keyword or username. The result looks like a picture gallery of tweets.

SeeSaw could also change the dynamics of a Twitter Chat because people will be able to "see" what is shared in the chat. During a recent #winechat, Twitter Chat participants shared their favorite Côtes du Rhône wines. SeeSaw displayed a cornucopia of wine labels shared in the tweets.

At the May 12th #ideachat, we will crowdsource ideas for the ultimate Twitter Chat tool. What is "The Future of Twitter Chats"? Join us!

twheel: Radial Tweet-Organizing App

twheel: Radial Tweet-Organizing App | Data is Beautiful | Scoop.it

twheel twitter app - The Twheel Twitter app is a way to synthesize information on a data-heavy social media platform.

The developers at Twheel found that synthesizing the mass amounts of content on Twitter was difficult when armed with just a scroll option. Aiming to create a more intuitive and visual way to experience the Twitterverse, Twheel was born. It’s an app that shows 30 Tweets in a radial configuration. Much like you would on an iPod’s click wheel, the user runs their thumb around the wheel to read updates. Once a Tweet has been read, the bar turns from orange to clear, which helps to keep track of what you have read. An added bonus is the app’s ‘hot’ feature, which tracks the success of a Tweet that has received ‘retweet’ and ‘favourite’ attention....

"The Power of Networks" + The Importance of Polymaths - Beautifully Visualized by RSA

"The Power of Networks" + The Importance of Polymaths - Beautifully Visualized by RSA | Data is Beautiful | Scoop.it

Manuel Lima maps the "Power of Networks" in another beautiful RSA visualization.

Our brain is like a symphony played by hundreds of thousands of instruments.

Lima suggests, "Is there a universal structure?" I love that he talks about the importance of polymaths, "It's not enough to be a specialist in one area. At least create outbound ties, so that you are able to learn from other disparate areas."

This is the most beautiful aspect of knowledge--by looking at this 'network thinking.'

It's more important that we actually make that mental shift. There are immense benefits that can come from that network outlook of the world itself.
