EMR for MLB. The new frontier of baseball data is marrying baseball statistics with medical injury research, keeping players healthy and injury-free.
blogbrevity's insight:

During this tech boom, is it a coincidence that the tech savvy San Francisco Giants are in the World Series for the third time since 2010? This post looks at the relationship of technology, leadership, big data analytics, and baseball. In particular, how Major League Baseball manages its player/patient population, and the trends they are following since converting players from paper medical records to EHR including injury trends and biometrics.

Collection by color | Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum | Data is Beautiful | Scoop.it

Color, or colour, is one of the attributes we're interested in exploring for collection browsing. Bearing in mind that only a fraction of our collection currently has images, here's a first pass.

Objects with images now have up to five representative colors attached to them. The colors have been selected by our robotic eye machines who scour each image in small chunks to create color averages. These have then been harvested and snapped to the grid of 117 different colors — derived from the CSS3 palette and naming conventions — below to make navigation a little easier.

blogbrevity's insight:

Also just spent the weekend enjoying "Paris in Color" where Nichole Robertson takes you on a stroll through Paris via her photographs organized by collections of color: noir, bleu, marron, vert, orange, rose, violet, rouge, jaune, and blanc! Enjoy! Think this is a curation trend.

When You Listen To Bach, What Color Do You See? | Data is Beautiful | Scoop.it
Put on a Bach concerto and close your eyes. Now picture a color. What color do you see? If it’s a fast Bach concerto in a major key, it’s likely you’ll picture a color that’s more saturated and brighter — like a red or a yellow.
blogbrevity's insight:

The findings may be useful for advertising and creative non-drug-based therapies. They also may help researchers better understand people who have a condition called synesthesia, said Palmer.

The 4 Vs of Big Data

The 4 Vs of Big Data | Data is Beautiful | Scoop.it

Big Data is the Gold Rush of the 21st Century where discovering nuggets of actionable insights is transforming the way we work, live, & play.  Big Data Is Changing the Whole Equation for Business and organizations that fail to define Big Data Leadership will fall behind, far behind.  Organizations that hope to remain competitive in today’s market will include a strategy that implements Big Data tools along with the training and development of Data Scientists and Big Data Artists.

Big Data Virtualization Processing unstructured, semi-structured, and structured data can be accomplished with open-source tools such as Hadoop, MongoDB, Node.JS, with multiple programming languages including Java and Python. Many of these Big Data Tools can be installed and configured within a few minutes. We can also leverage Cloud Computing for processing Big Data. Cost-effective processing of Graph Data for Social Network Analytics can be accomplished with GraphChi. My friend and colleague, Brad Cox, created an easy to use plugin to accelerate graph data processing. There are a plethora of tools and resources out there. Help others and share your favorites here. Big Data Visualization Getting the right information to the right person at the right time in the right way is a big deal. Data Visualizations should not be cryptic like a puzzle, but easy to understand. This is not a simple task and is the reason why we need more Big Data Artists in the world. My friend Angela Dunn has inspiring Data Visualization stories at Data is Beautiful. Data Visualization Tools Great artists experiment with a variety of material and tools to create their masterpieces. The modern day Big Data Artist can experiment with these tools to create their next masterpiece.

Visual.ly’s new Google Analytics tool sends you weekly Web metric reports as infographics

Visual.ly’s new Google Analytics tool sends you weekly Web metric reports as infographics | Data is Beautiful | Scoop.it

"We're big fans of Visual.ly here at TNW, ever since it launched as the home of data visualization and infographics way back in July 2011.

The platform has evolved somewhat since then, launching Visual.ly Create for users to create their own infographics with ease, before going on to roll out a complete redesign with social features last July. And then in October, Visually unveiled a new marketplace to help put its community of infographic designers to work

So, when we got wind of Visual.ly’s latest launch, naturally we were all ears (well, eyes). The Israeli startup has launched a new visual reporting tool designed to bring Google Analytics to your email inbox courtesy of a weekly infographic....

Last year, Vizzuality, Hyperakt, and members of the Google Chrome team worked on a visualization of web technologies and browsers. Since it was warmly received by the community, we decided to make a new version, using some of the latest web technologies to provide a fresh and distinctive experience.

In addition to updating the visualization with new browser versions and web technologies, we built a secondary visualization to show the growth of internet users and internet traffic worldwide.

As a writer, I find this set of predictions both interesting and, well, less than overwhelming. I'd like to see more creativity, especially with regard to the "least likely" possibilities, and less focus on tech companies. I'm more interested in thinking about what life might be like, than in which social media giant is on top. What predictions do you have, and what do you think are the odds for or against?

Counterintuitive! Data Visualization of Myers-Briggs Personality Types in Twitter Bios

Counterintuitive! Data Visualization of Myers-Briggs Personality Types in Twitter Bios | Data is Beautiful | Scoop.it
blogbrevity's insight:

In case you missed our #ideachat discussion on Myers-Briggs personality types and Twitter, see the counterintuitive results in the data visualization OppoBoppo created. This data reflects those who have chosen to identify themselves with their Myers-Briggs type in their Twitter bio. Important to note: this data does not reflect the distribution of types on Twitter, but those who have "chosen to identify" themselves. What makes this counterintuitive is that more "I' rather than "E", and more "N" rather "S", types identified themselves by type.

Specifically, the largest number of people by type in their bio were "INFJ" and "INTJ". The type least likely to list in their bio were "ESFP" and "ESFJ".
