Education Fast Forward - Promethean Planet

Education Fast Forward - Promethean Planet | Education Tech & Tools | Scoop.it
Debating the future of education with global thought leaders.

Education Fast Forward (EFF) brings together leading global experts and change agents from the world of education to discuss the topics that matter most. The forum addresses the key challenges facing governments, educators and employers both now and in the future, and aims to find practical resolutions.

EFF8 will take place on Thursday November 21, 2013 and will be streamed live here on Promethean Planet from 12.00 until 14.30 GMT. We will debate the topic New Pedagogies – Is this the time? Join us and help us to examine teacher realities and the drive to innovate.

The learning relationship between teachers and learners is changing, and this change is beginning to drive more engaging and productive learning experiences. This new learning relationship depends on the development of new pedagogies which have the potential to drive deeper learning for every learner.

Michael Fullan and Kristen Weatherby will open this debate. Michael will start by exploring the concept of new pedagogies and how these pedagogies will use the very capacity of technology today to see learning flourish and change more than it has in the past two thousand years. Kristen will then bring her experience of running TALIS at the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) and her insights into how teachers are currently behaving in their teaching."

Reading this book as a young man changed my life as a teacher.  I took to Papert's ideas and was soon teaching LOGO to 5th graders. Later I started a summer time school for kids in a storefront at Lake Tahoe.  Great memories.

Papert's work is every bit as fresh now as it was in the 1980's.  Check him out!

I am fascinated by Papert's perception of educators as anthropologists, "using dynamic cultural trends as a medium to carry educational interventions." How then will the face of education change within global communities? This intriguing book review, originally scooped by Dennis O'Connor, prompted me to order my own copy. I think the early insights expressed by Papert continue to shine light on teaching and learning in the 21st century.

Educational Leadership, Technology, and the Future - Santa Barbara Independent

Educational Leadership, Technology, and the Future - Santa Barbara Independent | Education Tech & Tools | Scoop.it

"Education is the last pencil and paper institution in the United States, if not the world. How can that be? The most important institution in our society and we give it the least support. Rarely do we even provide our children with current technological tools.

Even without the necessary means, our teachers are incredibly successful. The national average for computer access is one machine for every ten students, which means that some of our students have even less access. I might also add that these averages do not tell the whole story. Many schools portray their technology levels as high, but the computers available are seriously outdated. This issue of the haves and have-nots is also very closely correlated with socio-economics. Wealthier schools have more technology; poor schools have less. This can’t be acceptable to any of us.

How could any business be successful under the same circumstances? Think about it, what small business could exist without the proper tools for each of its employees? What would a business owner/manager say to their staff? “Come on now, take turns.” I can’t imagine. I tend not to listen to critics of education much anymore. I say, provide us with that which you have and we will prepare our students. I hope you are starting to get the picture - we need to stop using compliance as a tool to direct learning. We need to start focusing on providing our students with appropriate access to real learning tools with 21st century instructional methods."

ghbrett's insight:

This was one of the underlying recent global webcast from the Education Fast Forward community. Among other important points in this article is how Education is not keeping up with the Real World that students will enter after their educational experiences. The author makes some suggestions.

What do I want to know about this topic?
How do I know I know it?
What kinds of resources might help?
How do I know the info is valid?
Does my research raise new questions?
And, in a nod to digital and social media, How do I use media to express my message?

Pinboard is a social bookmarking service which allows you to easily save and organize any number of links, with no limits on text descriptions. Pinboard is characterized by having a no-frills, simple interface, by being very speedy and reliable and by being able to import, sync and export all of your links easily.

Pinboard integrates also a powerful web caching and indexing feature available to "pro" accounts ($25/year) which allows you to keep a full cached and searchable copy of any bookmark you save.

Advanced edit tagging, filtering and bundling features make it easy to oganize and find links even inside very large collections.

Links saved can be set to be public or private.

All of the bookmarks saved inside Pinboard can be easily exported in a standard file format. A set of basic APIs is also available.

You can import all your existing bookmarks from Delicious, Google Bookmarks, Diigo, Firefox, Safari, and many other sources by following the instructions on the howto page.

A very useful feature called Tab Sets allows to quickly save all of your currently open browser tabs to Pinboard having the unique advantage of being able to re-open them even if you're on another machine or in a different browser.

N.B.: The site has a unique and now proven business model and is entirely self-funded. Ad-free.

My comment: Excellent bookmarking service for anyone in need of a no-frill, reliable and fast tool. The archiving feature is particularly valuable as well as the auto-syncing with multiple services (Instapaper, Read It Later, Twitter. Delicious).

The service has a one-time fee of around $10.
