What Youth Want - Experiential Learning, Social Learning - Huffington Post

"The global youth unemployment crisis will not be solved by doing more of the same.

The formal education system is not meeting current workforce demands and this leads to a critical skills mismatch between the young job-seeker and the modern employer. With over 75 million youth unemployed worldwide, this mismatch has created a tremendous waste of the energy, passion and talent of young women and men.

The absence of 21st century workforce skills development underlies the disconnect between formal education systems and the needs of employers -- skills like communications, critical thinking, action research, project management, facilitation and working in teams -- and the self-empowerment that gives youth the confidence to apply these skills.

... We must take a hybrid approach -- we must be courageous and construct a new experiential and social learning environment. This will involve internships, face-to-face and online learning, learner-driven learning paths, peer-to-peer coaching and mentoring, transferable credits, a culture of continuous inquisitiveness and a blend of social entrepreneurship. It is technology that will underpin and integrate an accessible, effective and blended environment where no one is left out." from source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com

Maria João Loureiro's curator insight, February 1, 2014 3:37 PM

Free training offered for would-be weather spotters - Utica Observer Dispatch

"The National Weather Service will be holding a training class this month for volunteers interested in measuring snowfall totals.

The Basic SKYWARN training class will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, at the Emergency Preparedness Training Center located at 5900 Airport Road in Oriskany.

The free weather spotter class is part of a nationwide program that provides real-time severe weather reports to the National Weather Service, and requires no prior training or equipment.

“Trained weather spotters provide valuable lifesaving information to the National Weather Service and we encourage all those who have interest in weather to participate in this critical program,” said David Nicosia, warning coordination meteorologist. “Despite all the technological advances, SKYWARN spotter reports are still crucial in providing more accurate severe weather warnings.”

Read more: http://www.uticaod.com/news/x825436386/Free-training-offered-for-would-be-weather-spotters#ixzz2mXzUjSh3

ghbrett's insight:

I wonder how many schools or classes are engaged in programs like this? My iPhone has a couple weather applications that allow access to web cameras. I notice with interest that many of the cameras are located at schools. What a great way to get engaged with ecology and environmental events. The student could even compare archival information to current trends which might be considered a form of local history.
