Is enhanced colocation going mainstream?

Is enhanced colocation going mainstream? | Data Centre News | Scoop.it
Colocation is a natural and cost-effective solution for SMEs to meet their data centre needs. The smallest organisations don’t typically need this kind of infrastructure and can manage with in-house resources. The largest corporations can afford to build their own data centres according to their specific needs.

As the number of data centres increase, so does the need for properly trained technicians in order to run them. Whilst this might seem obvious, the skill set for these technicians isn’t so obvious, or easily obtained. What type of skills does this new breed of technician require, and could anyone be suitable for the job?

4Degres: The Biggest, Most Secure Internet Data Centre Ever Built in Quebec City | MarketWired.com

4Degres: The Biggest, Most Secure Internet Data Centre Ever Built in Quebec City | MarketWired.com | Data Centre News | Scoop.it

Over the course of the next few weeks, construction will begin on the largest Internet data centre ever built in Quebec City. 4Degrés, which will be located in the Quebec Metro High Tech Park, is the only centre to benefit from a 14.2 megawatt power supply agreement for a single strategic block signed with Hydro-Québec, enabling it to attain the Tier III level of security. Martin Bouchard, founder of Copernic and co-founder of Coveo, is at the helm of this unique project, which guarantees the secure housing of computer servers in a colocation facility.

"It was high time the greater Quebec City area had its own ultra secure, large-scale, state-of-the-art data centre featuring underground power lines and a very high capacity Internet connection aimed at addressing the needs of local businesses, organizations and government institutions," points out businessman Martin Bouchard, who is one of the 25 leading pioneers of Information Technology (IT) in Quebec.

4Degrés will be one of the rare data centres in the province to be certified Tier III by the Uptime Institute, the global data centre authority. This certification ensures operational sustainability thanks to a reliable power supply available exclusively to the block chosen by 4Degrés and supported by various redundant systems.

The centre will feature a fail proof backup system. "Nothing has been overlooked in the past two years to ensure maximum reliability and operational sustainability," Martin Bouchard asserts. "Optimized air conditioning, a high-performance fire detection system, top notch industrial generators, a biometric access control system: nothing has been left to chance."

The building will be a genuine "bunker" consisting of modular computer rooms capable of housing around 2,000 cabinets, that is to say a capacity of close to 85,000 servers. Access to the building and server rooms will be ultra secure: multiple access levels, closed-circuit cameras, magnetic cards, biometric control (iris and fingerprint identification) and a security guard stationed around the clock.

Where is your cloud?

Where is your cloud? | Data Centre News | Scoop.it
The cloud: it’s a brilliant idea. Just a short time ago businesses were tied to their physical infrastructure. Any large company with significant IT requirements needed their own servers, and likely their own data centres: potentially whole rooms or even buildings filled with servers, as well as the hardware and the employees to support and maintain them.

Custom power distribution for your data centre’s unique needs

Custom power distribution for your data centre’s unique needs | Data Centre News | Scoop.it
Every business is different, and so it follows that in an ideal world, every data centre would be different, too. What works for the budget and requirements of one organisation will not be the case for another. Data centre managers purchasing facilities know this, but are often faced with restrictions on their options that ultimately go back to one problem: the Power Distribution Unit (PDU).

Telcos look to data centers for profit growth (DCD)

Telcos look to data centers for profit growth (DCD) | Data Centre News | Scoop.it

Report says data centers will help telcos squeeze more margin out of content

29 July 2014 by Nick Booth (Datacenter Dynamics)

Telecom providers will invest heavily in data center facilities in the immediate future to grow revenues, predicts a new report from analyst firm Research and Markets.

The report, The New Telco Data Centre - Pricing for the New Telecoms Data Centre - 2014 to 2019, suggests telcos are making plans for an expansion of multiple hosting, cloud, networking and power requirements.

Telcos are making data the center piece of their strategy for getting more profit out of their investment in networks and striving to bring old silos of data together.

The study method was based on a TCL survey of 57 telecom providers around the world that have developed their own data center infrastructure.

Analysis of the data created by this survey identified 2,200 telecom provider data center facilities with around 2.9m sq m of space available.

Certain telcos now spend between US$100m and US$300m developing each large campus-based data center facility says the report.

At the high end of the telco sample, some are planning to build multiple data halls for cloud services across multiple countries.

Modular data centers represent another important trend, as these new fast and flexible building blocks allow telcos to build by increments and adapt to changing customer demand.

There has been a migration taking place, towards cloud services, that will continue for the next five years, says the report, as key hosting and IT applications (such as server hosting, security and disaster recovery & back up services) are virtualized and offered as an on-demand service.

Virtualization will be the foundation on which telcos begin to create a more fluid set of services that can be provisioned more skilfully and offered as a variety of flat rate pricing models, according to the report.

“The telecom provider is becoming more circumspect about bidding for large IT outsourcing deals. Instead they are providing partial outsourcing of individual applications or services using a virtualized on-demand platform,” said the report.

Overall new data center revenues are forecast by the author to increase by 28% per annum over the five-year period from the end of 2014.

This will take them from $3.1bn per annum in 2014 to $7.5bn a year by 2019.
