Global interconnection and data centre company, Equinix, has invested US$39.4 million in the phase two expansion of its Sydney SY3 International Business Exchange data centre, substantially increasing the company’s Australian capacity.
Opened today by the Federal Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy and Equinix Australia’s Managing Director, Tony Simonsen, the Sydney facility is located south of Sydney and provides approximately 1,000 cabinets across 22,927 square feet.
Simonsen said that once the third and final phase of the SY3 centre was completed, the IBX would provide 72,850 square feet and capacity for 3,000 cabinets.
He said the facility was opened six months ahead of schedule due to customer demand as a result of “increased data usage and a rise in the number of companies transitioning to cloud.”
“We have seen significant growth in cloud adoption in Australia and we expect this trend to continue. Equinix Sydney has a well-developed and diverse business ecosystem of partners and service providers. Our IBXs provide the optimum place for customers including cloud, digital content, enterprise, financial services and network providers to connect with their customers and partners.”
Simonsen cites a recent Forrester report that 36 percent of Australian organisations are currently leveraging cloud-based services, representing an increase in 22 percent from 2010 and 14 percent in 2009.
TMX Atrium, provider of smarter infrastructure solutions for the financial community, has further refined its access options into the Equinix FR2 International Business Exchange™ (IBX®) data centre in Frankfurt.
