Don't get this initiative wrong. This is not about the Fountain of youth, albeit that the idea is used for publicity reasons. So why isn't is about the Fountain of youth? Well, there is no such thing as a Fountain of youth, which in scientific, biologic or genetic terms would be equivalent to there is no gene that guarantees you will become old. Thus, this is just about lowering the price or the cost of sequencing and obtaining information regarding Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms that are related to lower fitness. As such this will generate a set of data "good" genes.
So, this is progress but we still have to face the real challenge: What does it mean to be a good gene? To what extent are we going to use this information. Yesterday I posted an issue regarding gene therapy. Think of the combination and what is already happening to health care. The cost of health care is exploding on the one hand and on the other hand it allows for an even larger human population.
So, although it is progress, we should think about all the aspects of increasing knowledge. Maybe we (you and me as persons) should first accept a few things. Do we want to become 120? I don't care if your answer is yes (Mine is yes if in intrinsic prosperity) but you cannot combine that with allowing unlimited, unsustainable population growth. Do you accept the challenge?
