StarKid Productions - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

StarKid Productions, also known as Team StarKid, is a Chicago-based musical theatre company founded in 2009 at the University of Michigan by Darren Criss, Brian Holden, Matt Lang, and Nick Lang. Best known for the musical A Very Potter Musical, a parody of the Harry Potter series, the troupe produces musical-comedies inspired by pop culture, with original scripts, songs, and music. StarKid use social media for theatrical distribution, to make their productions accessible to a worldwide audience.

StarKid's repertoire additionally consists of albums, concerts, web series and books. The company's album Me and My Dick, featuring original songs and music, became the first charting student-produced musical recording on Billboard, debuting at #11 on the “Top Cast Albums" chart in 2010; the following year they landed at #1 on the same chart with Starship, another original album.

StarKid Productions is composed of actors, writers, directors, composers, choreographers, and designers, most of them originating from the University of Michigan's School of Music, Theater and Dance. The members met while collaborating on original and classic plays through Basement Arts, the university's student-run theater organization.

Blaine Anderson - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Blaine Devon Anderson[1] is a fictional character from the American musical comedy-drama television series Glee. Played by Darren Criss, Blaine was introduced in the sixth episode of the second season as the openly gay lead singer of the Dalton Academy Warblers, a rival show choir to New Directions, the show's primary musical group. Blaine initially served as a mentor for New Directions member Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer). Chemistry between the two, combined with fan support for the couple, led series co-creator Ryan Murphy to pair them romantically. Their relationship has been well received by critics, and they have been named "one of the most beloved TV couples of the millennium" by Jarett Wieselman of the New York Post.[2] At the beginning of the third season, Blaine transfers to McKinley High and joins New Directions; concurrently, Criss was promoted from recurring guest star to the show's main cast.

Criss auditioned for Glee several times before being cast as Blaine, including for the lead role of Finn Hudson. He believed he would be ill-suited to that character, but identifies with Blaine, having been raised among the "gay community".[3] He plays Blaine as charismatic and confident, and finds his youthful self-acceptance a fitting counterpoint to common media portrayals of gay characters.

As the Warblers' lead vocalist and subsequent New Directions member, Blaine has performed a number of songs on the television series. His first, a cover version of "Teenage Dream" by Katy Perry, became the fastest-selling Glee single, reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100, and was certified gold in the U.S.[4][5] Tracks by the Warblers have sold over 1.3 million copies. The songs became popular enough to warrant a Warbler soundtrack album, Glee: The Music Presents the Warblers. Blaine has received mostly positive reviews from critics; Criss has been awarded a Rising Star accolade from the Gay and Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association for his portrayal. While the Blaine–Kurt ("Klaine") relationship has been met with acclaim, an episode storyline in which Blaine questioned his sexuality attracted negative reviews for undermining his previous characterization as a confident gay teenager.

Human (EP) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Human is the debut EP released by singer-songwriter Darren Criss.[1][2][3][5][6] Criss independently produced the EP[3] and it was released digitally on July 20th, 2010. The EP reached No. 17 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers.[7] As of April 2013, the EP has sold 27,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielson SoundScan.[8]

Criss describes that he put off making an EP for a long time because he is a perfectionist, which is why he prefers people to see him play live.[3] Criss recorded the EP in his room in about a week with an audio engineer friend of his.[3] Criss states that each of the songs are "old songs," adding that "Human" was the first song he wrote, back when he was 15.[3] The songs "Sami" and "Not Alone" appeared in the StarKid Productions musical A Very Potter Musical, but Criss had written them beforehand.[3] He wrote "Not Alone" while abroad in Italy and wrote "Sami" for the web series Little White Lie that he and other members of StarKid had done in 2007.[3]

Criss finds his music tough to categorize into a certain genre, but likes the word "soul-folk."[3]

Darren Criss - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Darren Everett Criss (born February 5, 1987) is an American actor, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and composer. One of the founding members and co-owners of StarKid Productions, a musical theater company based in Chicago, Illinois, Criss first garnered attention playing the lead role of Harry Potter in StarKid's musical production of A Very Potter Musical. The theater troupe made Billboard history when Me and My Dick became the first charting student-produced musical recording, debuting at number eleven on the Top Cast Albums chart in 2010.

Criss is best known for his portrayal of Blaine Anderson (2010–present), an openly gay high school student, on the Fox musical comedy-drama series Glee. As the lead vocalist of Glee's Dalton Academy Warblers, Criss' first number, a cover version of "Teenage Dream", became the fastest-selling Glee single, reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100, and was certified gold in the U.S. The Warblers have sold over 1.3 million tracks, and the soundtrack album, Glee: The Music Presents the Warblers (2011), peaked at number two on the US Billboard 200.

In January 2012, Criss made his Broadway debut, starring as J. Pierrepont Finch in the revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. His stint there proved to be a success: apart from Daniel Radcliffe's final week, the musical had the three most lucrative weeks of its 11-month run with Criss in the lead role, grossing more than four million dollars. In September 2012, he made his feature film debut in the comedy Girl Most Likely.
