Why We Talk About This

Why We Talk About This | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

by SID, Make Me A Sammich

Why do we do this? Why do we write about our experiences and talk about misogyny and women in today’s society and put all this out into the world?

I used to wonder that. Why bother? The only people reading are a) people who already agree with you or b) people who honest to God just want to fight with you.

The people who should be paying attention usually aren’t, and if they are, it’s only to argue. Most misogynists don’t even realize you’re talking to them, because no one self-identifies as a misogynist. Even the most ardent among them love women, you see. They have mothers and sisters and everything. Some of their best friends are women. You can’t change the mind of someone who can’t hear you, so these are obviously—as much as we might wish otherwise—not the people we’re talking to.

» The next big affirmative-action case | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

Once the Supreme Court decides a major case on the constitutionality of using race as a factor in choosing the entering class at public colleges and universities, it will find waiting for it another case. Potentially, this new case may be of even greater importance: it will test whether a state’s voters can simply abolish affirmative-action policies altogether.

I think you are having difficulty with the facts.
Deanna Dahlsad's comment, November 9, 2012 7:11 PM
Fact One: We do have the Electoral College and in that sense, along with the increase of democrats in other elected positions, it was a loud & clear message. Fact Two, everything Rachel Maddow listed was a fact for the nation -- and to be celebrated in the spirit of us as a nation. Fact Three, when it comes to compromise, the democrats are not to blame; republicans declared their refusal to participate in government, and fulfilled that one promise. Need more facts? Let me know.
Gracie Passette's comment, November 9, 2012 9:45 PM
I don't view a listing of the facts as destructive. Maddow listed facts ~ sure, facts that progressives like, but facts nevertheless. It's like Party Recon over there, didn't watch/listen to the whole piece or they would have known that facts are needed, not only to have discussions, but for having reality based discussions, something too many, especially those on the far-right like FOX & their viewers, are incapable of facing.

Irish abortion options

Irish abortion options | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

Many countries are condemned in the West for organised religion and its effect on peoples lives. Societies throw their arms up in horror if countries like Iran or Afghanistan deny women basic rights. They tend, however, not to mention Ireland. In Ireland, a woman cannot have an abortion if she has been raped. She cannot have an abortion if the man who made her pregnant is beating her. She cannot have an abortion if the baby will die outside her body. She cannot even have an abortion if the fact of being pregnant is in some way threatening to her life. The absolute ban on abortion in Ireland creates some very stark choices for women.

Pennsylvania Bill Would Reduce Welfare Benefits For Women Who Cannot Prove They Were Raped

Pennsylvania Bill Would Reduce Welfare Benefits For Women Who Cannot Prove They Were Raped | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

By Tara Culp-Ressler, Think Progress

A Pennsylvania House bill seeks to limit the amount of TANF assistance that low-income women receive based on the amount of children they give birth to while covered under the program.

Despite the fact that low-income women who give birth to children would logically need increased assistance to care for their larger family, Pennsylvania lawmakers - State Reps. RoseMarie Swanger (R), Tom Caltagirone (D), Mark Gillen (R), Keith Gillespie (R), Adam Harris (R), and Mike Tobash (R) - don't want their state's welfare program to provide additional benefits for that newborn. If a woman gives birth to a child who was conceived from rape, she may seek an exception to this rule so that her welfare benefits aren't slashed, but only if she can provide proof that she reported her sexual assault and her abuser's identity to the  police.
