LeftAction: Tell NBC & CNN: Don't Cave to Republican Hillary Threats | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

Tell them not to cave. This really isn't rocket science: Hillary Clinton is an eminently newsworthy and compelling figure, and it's no surprise to anyone (well, except Priebus) that NBC and CNN would want to create programs around her story. Like they've done with a zillion other compelling figures. And given that the presidential election is over three years away, and Hillary Clinton isn't even a declared candidate, there's absolutely nothing inappropriate about doing this. Nothing. Nada. Zip

Sen. Elizabeth Warren: Reproductive rights isn’t just a women’s issue | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

Republican’s attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act is part of their assault on reproductive rights, according to Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA).

Speaking at Planned Parenthood’s Organizing and Policy Summit this month, Warren said access to health care and family planning services was not just a women’s issue.

“Certainly it is a women’s issue, but it’s a family issue,” she explained. “It effects everyone in the family. We have healthier families because of the things we fight for here at Planned Parenthood.”

Years from now, maybe even when Ryan Gosling is no longer relevant (will that ever happen?), people will be talking about Feminist Ryan Gosling. It’s funny, easy to consume and undeniably important.

I chose this article because it shows how in some places in the world, women are denied what they want to do with their bodies. This connects to the article because women never had a say in what they wanted to do in the family.

A Conservative’s Defense of Feminism

A Conservative’s Defense of Feminism | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

by ROBBY BARTHELMESS (Policymic)

This notion of a "war on men" creates a "crying wolf" scenario when real issues that adversely affect men come up. We do a disservice to these cases by combating them through a use of the "war on men" claim.

If you were to take a look at "feminism" in Merriam-Webster's dictionary, you would find two definitions; 1. the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes and 2. organized activity on behalf of women's rights and interests.

In my opinion, this makes any sane, rational person a feminist. So you needn't be out screaming "war on women" to call yourself a feminist. If you believe that men and women should be treated equally in political, economic, and social affairs — then you are, by definition, a feminist.  MORE

Party Recon's comment, July 19, 2013 12:44 AM
I think to say that there is no "war on men" is to miss the entire point. There IS a war on men -- men who think that they are the stronger, more deserving, and superior to their female counterparts. Men who believe in traditional family values. That is to say, those who would have our society nostalgically return to the 1800's where a woman's job was to tend to the children and the home, making sure to look pretty when hubby comes home from work, fetch his slippers, pipe, and smoking jacket, prop his feet up on a footstool and give them a proper massage while he sips scotch she's served up in a crystal rocks glass. Next, a dinner fit for the king of the castle is provided fresh from the oven and well, you get the picture.

Now here's the thing; there is absolutely nothing wrong with a man seeking these things in a women. The fact of the matter is that there are plenty of women who will gladly enter into this type of relationship. And as they say here in Australian -- Good on them. However, when these values are applied to the workplace, they should and must be warred on.

Work is define as:
Noun: Activity involving mental or physical effort done in order to achieve a purpose or result.
Verb: Be engaged in physical or mental activity in order to achieve a purpose or result, esp. in one's job; do work.

Believing that women are somehow less capable of carrying on such activities reeks of prejudice bordering on that of a slave owner and sadly, many of these neanderthals have perfected this perversity. So I say, war away! All that is required is a clearer definition of who exactly is the enemy.

Closets, Air Conditioning, And Water Fountains: The Current Anti-Choice Weapons Against Abortion

Closets, Air Conditioning, And Water Fountains: The Current Anti-Choice Weapons Against Abortion | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

On Saturday, a package of controversial abortion restrictions won final approval in the Texas legislature. The restrictions, which Gov. Rick Perry (R) will likely sign into law this week, will transform the reproductive landscape in the state by forcing the vast majority of abortion clinics to shut down.

So why exactly are abortion clinics being forced to close in Texas, as well as in themounting number of other states that are pushing similar regulations? It’s not because they’re providing unsafe care and they need to drastically change their practices. In fact, Texas’ health department has confirmed that the clinics currently operating in the Lone Star State are extremely safe.

5 Online Tools For Activists, By Activists

5 Online Tools For Activists, By Activists | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

Why are social networks powerful tools for causes and campaigns? Many times, people begin to engage in activism only after they’ve been attracted by the fun stuff in a campaign — connecting with old friends and sharing photos, for example. When they witness others participating, they’ll be more likely to join the cause. With socializing as the primary draw, it’s become easier for organizers to attract more and more unlikely activists through social media.

But once a campaign reaches its critical mass, activists might think about moving to other platforms made with their needs — especially digital security — in mind. Platforms like Facebook and Twitter will remain standard fare for online activism. But the time is right for niche-oriented startups to create tools that can supplement these platforms. Here are a few worth investigating....

BREAKING: NC GOP Turns Motorcycle Safety Bill Into Abortion Bill With No Public Notice

BREAKING: NC GOP Turns Motorcycle Safety Bill Into Abortion Bill With No Public Notice | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

WASHINGTON -- North Carolina House Republicans are pushing legislation that would restrict abortion access, attaching the measure to an unrelated motorcycle safety bill on Wednesday and giving neither the public nor Democratic legislators any advance notice.

On Wednesday morning, state Rep. Joe Sam Queen (D) wrote on Twitter, "New abortion bill being heard in the committee I am on. The public didn't know. I didn't even know."

"I wish I had more time to look at this new bill before I had to ask questions about it or debate it," he added.

The bill then passed the state House Judiciary Committee in a 10-5 party-line vote.

The stealth maneuver came after North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory (R) threatened to veto a similar Senate bill on Wednesday morning. The Senate legislation would require abortion providers to meet strict licensing standards and would mandate that a doctor is present for the entire procedure.

Susan Sarandon Dismisses “Feminism” | The Jane Dough

Susan Sarandon Dismisses “Feminism” | The Jane Dough | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

Actress and longtime supporter of women's rights Susan Sarandon denounced the word feminist in a recent interview with The Guardian:

"I think of myself as a humanist because I think it’s less alienating to people who think of feminism as being a load of strident bitches and because you want everyone to have equal pay, equal rights, education and healthcare.

It’s a bit of an old-fashioned word. It’s used more in a way to minimize you. My daughter [Eva Amurri] who is 28, doesn’t even relate to the word “feminist” and she is definitely in control of her decisions and her body."

It’s frustrating to see successful women such as Sarandon, Katy Perry, and even Yahoo’s CEO Marissa Mayer dismiss feminism when their successes would have been virtually impossible without it. It’s especially frustrating to hear support for the historic goals of feminism — equality, education, healthcare — in one sentence and then the term’s denouncement in the next.

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

On the other hand, use of the word "humanist" is also more inclusive, making equality for women part of a larger battle including race, age, sexual orientation, on & on & on...

Women of the Wall denied access to Kotel

Women of the Wall denied access to Kotel | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

Thousands of young seminary girls crowd women’s section, prompting police to prevent entry of prayer activists.

Several hundred members of the Women of the Wall feminist prayer group were blocked from entering the women’s section of the Western Wall on Monday morning, with police saying the move was due to thousands of young Orthodox girls who had taken over the site. It was the first time in the group’s 25-year history that it was denied access to the women’s section for its monthly prayer session, Haaretz reported.

Police said that between 5,000 and 7,000 seminary girls had thronged the women’s area, on orders from their religious leadership, in order to deny access to the Women of the Wall. In addition, police said, about 1,000 ultra-Orthodox male protesters were in the Western Wall plaza seeking to disrupt the controversial prayer service, which is held by the Women of the Wall at the start of each new month (Rosh Chodesh).

Women of the Wall have increased their public profile this year after a series of confrontations at the Wall and subsequent legal rulings in their favor. The group, according to its website, seeks “the right, as women, to wear prayer shawls, pray and read from the Torah collectively and out loud at the Western Wall,” an objective that is vehemently opposed by the ultra-Orthodox.
