This was written in May 2012, but things are not looking up for women and children in today's economy. The tragedy today is that people who could do something about this are too busy debating theory to deal with this unthinkable reality. jkl

If Only More Would Be This Aware & Ask

If Only More Would Be This Aware & Ask | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

I've read through your blog pretty extensively, and theres something I'd like to ask from a place of honesty and genuine desire to understand. A white man can never begin to understand the struggle of a person of color or the struggle of a woman against oppression, because he can never walk in that person's shoes. He can also never renounce the privilege that he has (simply because he exists) no matter the amount of self-educating he does. What, then, should he do to be an ally?

The girls are the ones showing up with most of their skin exposed. Other than showing their boxers, the boys have far less exposure. I'm glad if schools are enforcing dress codes. I get annoyed seeing young women with their ass, boobs and belly exposed. They look like they should be acting on some TV show like Dukes of Hazard, or some other show geared for men who want to see soft porn on TV.

Women: The Gem Of Society

Women: The Gem Of Society | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

In May every year, the world including Ghanaians celebrated Mother's Day in various ways at homes, Churches, some work places, on phones and others. Many wishes were sent to Mothers for their loving and caring nature.

Indeed, no one will dispute that women are the gem of society but globally, they are considered to be poor and disadvantaged than men and as the main caregivers of children, poverty hits them the hardest of all, despite the annual celebration of Mothers day.

While the day is celebrated every year, many attempts have been made to put women into their rightful place than where they are now. For women living in extreme poverty, every day is a struggle to survive. Consequently, they do not have the means or education to adequately consider negative repercussions on their environment, or the advantages of sustainable living.

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

If this doesn't open eyes to the need for feminism worldwide...

Feminist Porn Depicts Sexuality's Unruly Side Too

Feminist Porn Depicts Sexuality's Unruly Side Too | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

As this type of porn gains visibility, it reflects a greater demand for explicit sexual representations among women, where sex isn't always a "ribbon-tied box of happiness and joy," say editors in this excerpt from "The Feminist Porn Book."

...With the emergence of new technologies that allow more people than ever to both create and consume pornography, the moral panic-driven fears of porn are ratcheted up once again. Society's dread of women who own their desire, and use it in ways that confound expectations of proper female sexuality, persists. As Gayle Rubin shows, "Modern Western societies appraise sex acts according to a hierarchical system of sexual value." Rubin maps this system as one where "the charmed circle" is perpetually threatened by the "outer limits," or those who fall out of the bounds of the acceptable.

On the bottom of this hierarchy are sexual acts and identities outside heterosexuality, marriage, monogamy and reproduction. She argues that this hierarchy exists so as to justify the privileging of normative and constricted sexualities and the denigration and punishment of the "sexual rabble."

Yes, UK Women Think Society's Sexist, and Social Media Is the Natural Place to Talk About It

Yes, UK Women Think Society's Sexist, and Social Media Is the Natural Place to Talk About It | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

A wider debate has now emerged about the role of women in society. 'Fourth wave feminism' questions whether men and women both have a subconscious misogyny, perhaps a blind spot about women's role in public life. Do we all assume women will shut up and sit back, rather than fighting for a space within public discourse?

But some wonder if this broader discussion is just the latest opportunity for the liberal media to do a bit of hand-wringing. Campaigners point out an undercurrent of dissatisfaction and frustration from women; and we all know we haven't achieved equality in pay. But despite this, many people think ordinary women in society are basically... alright, aren't they? Do we have evidence that women in general, beyond the high-profile ones, feel sidelined, or feel that their legitimate concerns are ignored? Well yes, actually, we do.

The backlash against feminism aims to preserve the 'manosphere'

The backlash against feminism aims to preserve the 'manosphere' | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

[A]nti-feminist backlash occurs not when women have achieved equality but when there is any possibility that we might. It's "a pre-emptive strike" and here, I would say, it's been going on for the past five years. This is a strange time to be talking of backlashes when we have just seen several successful feminist campaigns, but we need to understand the scale of what is happening. I am glad there is a woman's face on the money. But can we have more actual money? Equal pay?

The reality is that in public life, politics, business and media, we are grossly under-represented. There are constant attacks on abortion, a push to make women dependent on partners – Iain Duncan Smith's "belief" – and women are disproportionally hit by cuts. The icons of the day are mute and "respectable" – such as Sam Cam and Kate Middleton.

The backlash started in the early 90s when to be laddish and un-PC was a bit a naughty. Liam Gallagher, described brilliantly by his brother Noel as "a man with a fork in a world of soup", was its pin-up.

Right now we are dealing with something worse: a rightwing establishment and its lackeys who have managed to convince themselves they are mavericks and who are openly anti-feminist.

Jody MacPherson's curator insight, November 2, 2014 1:25 PM

Suzanne Moore: Those in power are legislating away women's rights at work, making sure women are not promoted, maintaining a status quo in which half the population are silent and invisible. Internet trolls are but fleas on the mangy coat of the backlash. In popular culture as in politics, as Faludi wrote, this is not an organised and centralised conspiracy. Its workings are "encoded and internalised, diffuse and chameleonic".

And meanwhile in Canada, income splitting introduced by Harper says, "it's okay married women that you're not making as much as your husband, we'll let you manipulate the books and shuffle around the money so that he doesn't have to pay his fair share of taxes and you look like you're doing much better than you actually are!"

Oh happy day. The manosphere wins again.
