More Men Are Raped in US Than Women? Not. | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

You may have come across that assertion before if you have the habit of visiting MRA sites on the net.  I've seen it, but never found any sources for it, except for fuzzy hints that it's because of prison rape of men is not included in the general rape statistics.

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

The men's rights movement would like to distract from the matter at hand. While men are raped (& abused) looking at the minority of problems does not address the main problem of violence against women. Also, solving the problem of violence against women & rape culture would go a long way in addressing such violence across all genders.

A Woman’s Room Online: Misogyny, and the Idea That the Internet Isn't Real

A Woman’s Room Online: Misogyny, and the Idea That the Internet Isn't Real | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it
Here’s the thing. For hundreds of millions of people, the Internet is our workplace: we go there to collaborate, to do research, to promote our work. The Internet is the place where we meet our friends. It’s where we get our news. It’s where we organize charity activity, or political activity. For hundreds of millions of people, the Internet is a central hub of human activity.

Now. Think about what it would be like if every time you went to work, every time you went out with friends, every time you went out to get a newspaper, every time you went on a charity walkathon, every time you went to a neighborhood meeting to plan the new public park, you had people screaming at you how worthless you are, how ugly you are, how much they hate you, how much they want to torture and rape and kill you.

Think about showing up to work at 8:30 in the morning, and sitting down in this room.

Photo of the Day: “Women: Like men, only cheaper.” | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

his “Women: Like men, only cheaper” image should look familiar–we’ve sarcastically used to“celebrate” Equal Pay Day in the past. But an Australian tech executive was all-too-serious when he included it as a slide during his talk at a tech conference recently. Evan Thornleye explained how “forward-thinking” people such as himself can take advantage of the wage gap by hiring qualified women “for relatively cheap.”

Liberals and Feminists, Stop Enabling the Police State

Liberals and Feminists, Stop Enabling the Police State | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it
Sex, or fear of it, has been almost as important in the construction of this nightmare state as racism. Just as the legal gains of the civil rights movement were blunted by LBJ’s Safe Streets Act and the incipient “war on drugs,” the sexual revolution and women’s liberation were short-circuited by serial sex panics, police power in loco mariti, Victims’ Rights as a mask for vengeance and the conception of the Sex Offender as a new, utterly damnable category of human being. It’s significant that the police state’s expansion in the late 1960s–70s coincided not only with the blowing winds of freedom and conservative backlash but with the falling rate of profit. Twenty years on, with the welfare state exhausted, the punishment state found its greatest champion in Bill Clinton, whose neoliberal down escalator for the working class required a vast reserve army of unemployed. Capitalism needed the penitentiary. It always has. Old fears in new skins helped oil the machinery.

Clinton gave his violence program a twist of identity politics—enhanced penalties for violence against women, hate as an actionable emotion, child protection as a blanket for censorship and repression—but those who backed him were not simply gulled. For years before—and each side for its own reasons—some liberals had made common cause with some conservatives on policing sex. “Carceral feminists,” the subject of a fair amount of recent talk and scholarship on the roots of anti-trafficking campaigns, is an unlovely phrase, but it usefully denotes a social force that elided personal power with state power, eschewed the project of liberation—the goal of a radically different set of power relations—and took as its armor the victim’s mantle.

Give Men Same Rape Advice You Give Women, Here's How Absurd It Would Sound

Give Men Same Rape Advice You Give Women, Here's How Absurd It Would Sound | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it
Read closely, fellas.

Women, like men, have the right to move throughout the world without constantly fearing for their safety, yet the burden of prevention continues to fall squarely on women's shoulders. One can't help but wonder, what would it look like if we talked to men about rape prevention in the same way we talk to women?

malek's curator insight, September 3, 9:08 AM

To those who say that anti-rape advice for potential victims is just "common sense", please know that statistically, only 10% of victims were raped by strangers. 90% of sexual assault survivors knew who their attackers were. Avoiding walking in dark streets didn't work for a majority of victims, because they were not raped in an alley, but in their own homes, or the homes of someone they trusted.

5 Things I Learned as the Internet's Most Hated Person

5 Things I Learned as the Internet's Most Hated Person | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

Hi. My name is Zoe, and I make weird video games with some degree of success (and make them playable for free, if you're so inclined). My life is generally pretty uncomplicated, I guess, aside from the fact that a month ago the Internet decided to make me the center of a supposed global conspiracy. I made the mistake of dating a guy who would later go on to write a several-act manifesto about my alleged sex life and post it to every forum he could create a handle for

Hold Up, So How Does This Work?

Hold Up, So How Does This Work? | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

You find yourself a fucking taco, or a fucking beer, or a fucking taco and a beer, then you eat the fucking taco or drink the fucking beer or eat and drink both the fucking taco and the beer, and then you donate some money to an abortion fund. You fucking film yourself doing this shit and then you send us the fucking video and we put it on the fucking internet.

Fuck yeah to you for donating to to groups that work to keep abortion legal and accessible! Fuck yeah! You’re great! They’re great! We 100% percent completely and totally encourage you to donate your money and your time to groups that do important political work, and to organizations that provide much-needed services like pap smears, contraception and STI testing and treatment.

However, the Taco Or Beer Challenge founders regret to inform you that you also can’t win the Taco Or Beer Challenge by only doing this, because winning the Taco Or Beer Challenge depends entirely on you donating to an abortion fund, which is a fund that pays for people’s abortions or directly related logistical expenses.

(Caveat: yes indeedy, some Planned Parenthood affiliates and locations do have their own abortion funds! They totally count toward the challenge! Please be sure to specify which fund you donated to when you submit your badass taco or beer photo/video!)

Why are abortion funds so important, and why are they the sole non-negotiable part of the Taco Or Beer Challenge? Because abortion stigma is real, and the Taco Or Beer Challenge is about encouraging people to give abortion stigma a big fucking taco-covered middle finger by being loud and proud about directly funding abortion.

Terry O’Neill has been arrested fighting for immigration reform that respects women & families - National Organization for Women (NOW) | Facebook | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

For the second time, President Terry O’Neill has been arrested while participating in an act of civil disobedience on behalf of immigration reform that is s fair for women.

Our current immigration system flat out fails women by denying them equal opportunity. Women and children constitute three-quarters of all immigrants -- women alone make up 51% -- and yet only 25% of work visas are given to women. And the proposals floating around Congress will only make the situation worse.

The Blame Game: Black Women, Shame, and Victim Blaming

The Blame Game: Black Women, Shame, and Victim Blaming | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

The many stereotypes of black women are used to justify violence and aggression against them.  Because black women are mythologized as gold-digging, angry, physically strong, provocative shrews some black men assume (and this is something that having a mama, a auntie, a grandmother who raised you, or your own damn daughters doesn’t change) that if/when black women are hit, they asked for (or deserved) it.  At the end of the day many men empathize with other men and instead of vilifying any act of violence, physical or otherwise, against anyone, especially a woman, they attempt to justify it.  They put themselves in the shoes of the aggressor, but not the victim, and see themselves as blameless and reactionary, rather than violent and misogynistic.
