How sexism in schools is 'exhausting' young women

How sexism in schools is 'exhausting' young women | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

I'm fifteen years old, currently studying for my GCSEs and I feel that sexism in schools is a massive issue. The last thing I want to hear when walking into school on a Monday morning are rape 'jokes' and go-back-to-the-kitchen 'jokes'. Many girls who openly support feminism are automatically...

Feminism had become, until relatively recently, a dirty word, a label for women who hated men, had hairy armpits and burned their bras.

But the fight for equal rights along gender lines is suddenly in vogue again, and Camden’s schoolgirls are signing up

Do All-Girls Schools Breed Feminists or Mean Girls? | TIME.com | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

What happens when girls aren't under the scrutiny of boys? Do they get more girly or less so?

A new study has found that girls at same-sex schoolsfeel greater pressure to adhere to gender norms — and were bullied if they didn’t — than those at mixed-gender schools. Perhaps even more surprising, the same researchers say that girls at same-sex schools evaluated their self-worth based more on social confidence than cognitive confidence — while girls at mixed-gender schools weighed academics more heavily than social prowess.

...

“I was quite surprised by the results,” he says. “But do I think that these result would generalize to schools in North America? I do.”

Other experts disagree.

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

Fascinating -- and not just because I went to a women only college (esp as college is different than middle school).

Lauryn Phifer's curator insight, May 6, 2014 7:29 PM

I like this article a lot. I chose this article, because what they are saying about sexual inequality when there is a lack of education is true. This relates to the half the sky article, because in half the sky most of the women were educated at all, they we're at home because that's all they could do alone. Being educated in Least developed countries is normal, not just because some cant afford a secondary school, but because education is valued, especially education for women. Men are dominant women are not.

Maddie Morris's curator insight, May 7, 2014 7:19 PM

This article is discussing how as inequality is growing education is going to dry up. Without women a full establishment of education can not be achieved because have of the population is not in action. This relates to the article because they both discus how women play a major part in education.

Lauryn Phifer's curator insight, May 8, 2014 11:08 AM

I curated this article, because it talks about Education. In the half the sky article, education is one of the big issues that women have associated with gender inequality. Women don't get educated, because they are simply women, this article is important because it tells people that Education is important for everybody and not men.

What happened when I started a feminist society at school

What happened when I started a feminist society at school | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

After returning from this school trip I started to notice how much the girls at my school suffer because of the pressures associated with our gender. Many of the girls have eating disorders, some have had peers heavily pressure them into sexual acts, others suffer in emotionally abusive relationships where they are constantly told they are worthless.

I decided to set up a feminist society at my school, which has previously been named one of "the best schools in the country", to try to tackle these issues. However, this was more difficult than I imagined as my all-girls school was hesitant to allow the society. After a year-long struggle, the feminist society was finally ratified.

What I hadn't anticipated on setting up the feminist society was a massive backlash from the boys in my wider peer circle. They took to Twitter and started a campaign of abuse against me. I was called a "feminist bitch", accused of "feeding [girls] bullshit", and in a particularly racist comment was told "all this feminism bull won't stop uncle Sanjit from marrying you when you leave school".
