Protest at Government Failure to Assist Shack Dwellers After the Storm | Abahlali baseMjondolo

Protest at Government Failure to Assist Shack Dwellers After the Storm | Abahlali baseMjondolo | Daraja.net | Scoop.it
The huge storm that hit Durban last night has left several communities reeling. People's homes have been flooded and some have been washed away.

As always shack dwellers we are more vulnerable to these disasters than most other people. For years we have been trying to engage the eThekwini Municipality around both their failure to take adequate measures to protect shack dwellers from disasters like fire and floods and to offer proper support to shack dwellers after disasters. But the municipality only gives its time for the people for political issues and not ever for issues of development.
Firoze Manji's insight:

Once again, shackdwellers are ignored by the state. As always, Abahlali don't take the matter lying down.

Jon Smith's curator insight, December 21, 2012 4:36 PM

December 1, 2012

December 2, 2012, a storm hit Durban. Proper measures have not been taken by the eThekwini Municipality to protect shack dwellers from floods (they had had a storm years ago). The people claim that they are too involved with politics to have time for them. The people can’t even sleep at night because they are afraid they are going to be washed away. The Municipality plans to step it up in the future on protection but for now they must clean up after the flood.

I’m not sure what America should do here. It would be the right thing to do to help them if we can. Right now however, we have a terrible economy. I don’t think people would be able to spare a dollar for aid or helping the people get back in houses. I do still think charity organizations should try to raise money. They might find it considerably difficult. Actually, if the whole country instead of spending so much on luxury, donated one dollar then there would be more than enough money for them. We need to get ourselves together but help other people at the same time.

That which can never be forgotten: Fidel Castro

That which can never be forgotten: Fidel Castro | Daraja.net | Scoop.it
On Sunday October 12, the Sunday internet edition of The New York Times – a newspaper which under certain circumstances follows the political line most convenient to its country’s interests – published an article entitled “Obama should end the embargo on Cuba;” with opinions as to how, in its view, the country should proceed.

There are times when such articles are written by some prestigious journalist, such as someone I had the privilege of meeting personally during the first days of our struggle in the Sierra Maestra with the remainder of a unit which had been almost totally eliminated by Batista’s air force and army. We were at that time quite inexperienced; we didn’t even realize that giving the impression of strength to the press would be something that could merit critique.

Riot Police in Parliament

Riot Police in Parliament | Daraja.net | Scoop.it
The ANC has effectively abandoned the idea of liberation as a national project and sought, instead, to constitute itself as an authoritarian and predatory excrescence on society. By raising Jacob Zuma above the law, the ANC have broken the social contract on which a parliamentary system depends. The opposition now have a right to rebel. In fact, if they are genuinely committed to the idea of parliament as the primary seat of popular sovereignty, they now have an obligation to rebel and to sustai

Save the Children: Rescind or apologise for giving an award to Tony Blair. | Daraja.net | Scoop.it
Tony Blair was jointly responsible for starting an illegal war.  Had he been a "Third World Despot" he would almost certainly have been charged with war crimes.
The invasion of Iraq in 2003 unleashed a decade of devastating destruction on families in the region.  It also added fire to destruction beyond the region.  Save The Children giving Blair an award is a grotesque insult to those children killed, maimed and orphaned by the devastation his action precipitated.  Action which continues t

Justice for Hassan Diab: wrongfully extradited to France by Canada

Justice for Hassan Diab: wrongfully extradited to France by Canada | Daraja.net | Scoop.it

Whisked away from Ottawa before dawn with no chance to say farewell to his pregnant wife and 2-year old daughter, Dr. Hassan Diab remains in detention in the Paris vicinity. A French investigating magistrate placed Dr. Diab under judicial investigation (mis en examen) upon Hassan’s arrival in France. Dr. Diab can expect to be held in detention for nearly 2 years while waiting for the magistrate to conclude his investigation and decide whether or not to put him on trial.

Upon learning of the Canadian Supreme Court’s decision not to hear Hassan’s final appeal, Diab’s lawyer Donald Bayne, said “We now have the classic recipe for the wrongful conviction of a Canadian citizen.”

Solidarity call out for Abahlali baseMjondolo | Daraja.net | Scoop.it
Abahlali baseMjondolo (AbM) is a grassroots, democratic and member-led organisation based in Durban, a city in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. AbM have an impressive record of exposing corruption and asserting the constitutional rights of thousands of the marginalised shack-dwelling people. We, the undersigned, are in support of the resolve of AbM members to strive for more participatory forms of development and to advance the struggle for access to urban land.

We condemn all assassinations, political murders and other acts of violence and intimidation against AbM members and housing rights activists. In the past 18 months, four housing rights activists have been killed. This includes two prominent AbM members:

1. Thembinkosi Qumbelo (assassination, Cato Crest) – 15 March 2013

GRAIN — Trade deals criminalise farmers' seeds

GRAIN — Trade deals criminalise farmers' seeds | Daraja.net | Scoop.it

What could be more routine than saving seeds from one season to the next? After all, that is how we grow crops on our farms and in our gardens. Yet from Guatemala to Ghana, from Mozambique to Malaysia, this basic practice is being turned into a criminal offence, so that half a dozen large multinational corporations can turn seeds into private property and make money from them.

But people are fighting back and in several countries popular mobilisations are already forcing governments to put seed privatisation plans on hold.
