Agro-colonialism in the Congo: European and US development finance bankrolls a new round of agro-colonialism in the DRC

Agro-colonialism in the Congo: European and US development finance bankrolls a new round of agro-colonialism in the DRC | Daraja.net | Scoop.it

Development finance institutions (DFIs) were created by northern governments to provide financing for high risk projects in so-called developing countries. Their role is to provide public money for private ventures that would otherwise struggle to raise capital for projects where the anticipated returns in terms of poverty alleviation are high.

Today these government-controlled institutions provide upwards of $100 billion to private companies operating in developing countries, which is equivalent to almost two thirds of official development assistance.1 A growing share of these funds are targeted at companies operating in the food and agriculture sector.2

Covering up a massacre in Angola?

Covering up a massacre in Angola? | Daraja.net | Scoop.it

In mid-April 2015, news emerged about the killing of nine police-men in Angola's Huambo province. The incident involved the police and members of Juliano Kalupeteca's "Light of the World" religious sect. In the following days, grizzling reports emerged of a massacre of perhaps hundreds of sect members. We do not yet know the truth. Angola's government appears to do its utmost to prevent knowledge of it to transpire. Will the international community remain passive?

Via Campesina denounces the takeover of the World Expo by corporate interests

Via Campesina denounces the takeover of the World Expo by corporate interests | Daraja.net | Scoop.it

La Via Campesina (LVC), a worldwide movement representing millions of peasants, agricultural workers, indigenous villages and nomadic peoples, denounces the corporate takeover of the World Expo in Milan as well as the governmental complicity. The theme of the Expo is “Feed the planet; energy for life”.

The Expo in Milan serves as a showcase for multinational businesses that control the world market of food, genetic material of animals and plant seeds, pesticides and chemical fertilizers. These businesses work constantly to privatize and commercialize the public commons including the water, land, forests, minerals and seeds. They transform food into a commodity and reject the fact that food is a human right. Food is treated as a commodity, produced on a large scale using a lot of pesticides and GMOs for  people of limited economic means while healthy food is only within the financial grasp of the economic elite.

Stop the attack on social media + bloggers | Daraja.net | Scoop.it

Right now South Africans could face new regulations that could stop us from posting updates, tweets, images, videos and blogs without first getting approval from the Film and Publication Board. According to the Board's draft regulation, all online content must be classified including “...self generated content uploaded or posted on social media platforms”. [1] Together with the SOS Coalition, we demand that this regulation be scrapped as it violates our democratic right to freedom of expression and access to information.

We, social movements, grassroots organizations and civil society organizations engaged in the defense of food sovereignty and the right to food in Africa, met at the World Social Forum in Tunis in March 2015 to unite those opposing the G8 “New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition”. Social movements and organizations from Africa shared their experiences and analysis about the impacts of the New Alliance in their countries and participants from all over the world agreed to support their struggles against this threat to food sovereignty and agro-ecology. As such, we joined the Global Convergence of Land and Water Struggles and adopted its Declaration.1 This statement reflects our discussions and our demands to governments engaged in the New Alliance and expresses support for the call on the G7 Presidency made by the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa
