Sure Signs You’re Eating Too Much Sugar | Dangers of sugar consumption | Scoop.it
Not all sugars are created equal, and they’re hidden in most of today’s processed foods. Nutritionist, fitness trainer, and author JJ Virgin has written a new book that helps open your eyes to the way sugars are hidden. The book also provides practical tips on how to wean yourself from this pernicious ingredient that …
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Sugar, the 21st century's nemesis is back on the stage again. This time it's with J.J. Virgin, Nutritionist, fitness trainer, and author speaking about her new book, "The Sugar Impact Diet: Drop 7 Sugars to Lose up to 10 Pounds in Just Two Weeks".

You've heard and read here on this site that sugar is not your friend and why it's not.  Now it's time to break up the relationship before you get in too deep with chronic diseases, pharmaceutical drugs that only mask symptoms, and loss of time living your one beautiful life instead of being held hostage to doctors/hospitals, drug companies, pain and suffering.

Health tips: Eating too much sugar is not only bad for your health, it's downright dangerous and can lead to an early demise. Sugar is found in all types of processed refined non foods, though it's not labeled as such.

Fall in love with those low sugar fruits: cucumber, tomato, zucchini. Especially now in summer these veggie/fruits are abundant and relatively inexpensive. Pile them high on your plate and enjoy summer's bounty.  These veggie/fruits  provide more nutrients and fiber (slows absorption of glucose into your bloodstream) with fewer calories than other types of food.

Buy grapes (organic preferable), pop them in the freezer to give your tastebuds a WOW sensation on these hot summer days. Eat some no sugar or homemade nut butter or chia seed pudding with your grapes for the slow steady digestion of sugars and starches.

Eat overnight oats or oatmeal for breakfast/brunch with nuts/seeds, a few berries, and a generous sprinkling of organic cinnamon (highest antioxidant and helps lower blood sugar). A plus for you, it adds a sweet flavor to your oatmeal. For GF eat quinoa, and/or amaranth porridge.

8 Simple Ways To Eat Less Sugar

8 Simple Ways To Eat Less Sugar | Dangers of sugar consumption | Scoop.it
Eating too much sugar is bad for your health. You've heard it before. Excessive consumption can increase your risk for obesity, heart disease and a host of other health complications.

The World He
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Are you trying to cut back on your sugar intake?  For some this goal can be difficult  what with hidden sugars, artificial sugars, soda consumption, daily ingrained habits,  and cravings. For others with a junk food habit, which leads to chronic diseases (blood sugar issues/pre-diabetes/diabetes, metabolic syndrome,  obesity,  heart disease, liver and kidney issues), reducing sugar intake can seem impossible at best. It won't be easy for many of you, yet it can be done and the results are worth it.

Health Tips:  First, clean out your kitchen cabinets. Read those labels and if you find words you can't pronounce or more than 5 ingredients, or words that end in "ose", put the item in the trash and recycle the containers. Words ending in "ose" just means another word for sugar. That first step is huge all by itself. You're showing a commitment to making a difference for yourself, your family, and your health, and indirectly our planet.

Second, shop in the perimeter of your grocery store where the produce and bulk foods are located.  Fill up your cart with veggies and some fruits and some bulk items as in  nuts/ chia, flax, hemp seeds, beans, lentils, split peas, ancient whole grains (amaranth, buckwheat, millet, quinoa, teff) and oats, coconut flour, and herbs and spices.  Purchase more of cucumber, zucchini, tomatoes, avocados, lemons/limes, winter squash (in season) as these are all low sugar fruits. Yes, fruits.

If budget allows, buy organic or at least non-GMO, local, or sustainable food. And when you shop, make sure you've already eaten before going to the store. A full stomach will help to deter you from buying so called specials, discounted junk foods loaded with sugars, chemicals, pesticides, GMOs, endocrine disruptors, and more toxins.

Third, if you have to buy processed packaged food, read the label and follow the same three steps you did when cleaning out your kitchen cabinets. Purchase healthy unrefined oils as in coconut and olive oil. Try to buy pouches or aseptic containers for beans and other foods in place of cans which all have the chemical BPA in the lining.

Fourth, prepare your own food. Find recipes online or get creative. Cinnamon, carob, vanilla and other extracts help to make snacks, treats, desserts taste sweet. Eat a whole piece of fruit with nut butter and you'll have a tasty sweet that won't spike your blood sugar. Use cinnamon and carob in your coffee or tea in place of sugar and use nut milk in place of dairy for creamer.

Fifth, celebrate your wins, get a support group of friends and do this together in person or online. Is it easy, no, yet you can turn your health around. Get a good health professional with knowledge of nutrition. Start exercising. You can't exercise your way out of a bad food regimen. Eating healthy goes hand in hand with doing the exercise. whether it be walking 30 minutes every day, doing Tabata, weight lifting, aerobic and interval training, or any other exercise/dance routine you prefer.  You just have to begin. That's the real secret.

How Sugar Hijacks Your Brain And Makes You Addicted

How Sugar Hijacks Your Brain And Makes You Addicted | Dangers of sugar consumption | Scoop.it
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Have you tried to cut back on sugar, really cut back and found it very difficult to do? Dr Robert Lustig, pediatric endocrinologist says that "in some cases it seems downright impossible". This isn't about an occasional consumption of sugary foods. This is about eating sugary foods  in junk food (including hidden sugars) and artificial sweeteners 24/7  365 days of the year and being unable to get off the roller coaster of energy followed by profound fatigue.  What you're dealing with is a biochemical disaster which accelerates aging and contributes to obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and a slew of other disorders associated with altered blood sugar metabolism. This biochemical disaster changes your brain's biochemistry producing mood swings, confusion, and causes a powerful effect on the reward centers of your brain which functions similarly to drugs of abuse like cocaine and nicotine. According to Dr Lustig, new information within the last 5 years, shows that sugar down regulates the same receptors in the reward center of your brain as all of the other addictions. In using the word "addiction" Dr Lustig and Dr. Elissa Epel, psychologist hope it will help you recognize the power of certain foods on your brain.

Health Tips:  If you aren't consuming an overload of processed fake foods with hidden sugars and artificial sweeteners, then this video/article is a good wake up call for you to reduce or avoid completely processed junk foods. No one wants to be obese, no one willingly chooses it. You do have a choice at this stage of the game. Choose wisely for not just yourself, but for your family, your friends, and our planet. If you're reading this and watching the video and you know you're eating more and more junk food/sugar and can't seem to stop, connect with a functional medicine or integrative medicine doctor, or nutritionist who can help you find your way back. The best thing you can do for your health and well-being is to eat real whole plant based foods as much or totally as possible and shy away from processed foods. Food manufacturers are not your friend.

How Sugar Harms Your Brain Health and Drives Alzheimer's Epidemic - Health In Focus

How Sugar Harms Your Brain Health and Drives Alzheimer's Epidemic - Health In Focus | Dangers of sugar consumption | Scoop.it
Did you know that Alzheimer's has also been dubbed "Type 3 Diabetes"? It might astonish you to know that... [read more]
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Sugar, aka sweet poison is one of the most consumed ingredients in food and is one of the most harmful for your health. Sugar has been linked to Diabetes, Heart disease, Metabolic Disorder, Cancer, Depression, and now Alzheimer's Disease.  Simple carbohydrates in refined foods such as white bread, flour, pastries, snacks, donuts, cookies,  pies, chips, sodas, and all other lab engineered ingredients that are high in sugar and have very low to no fiber are absorbed almost instantly into your bloodstream. Once in the bloodstream they trigger an immediate surge in blood sugar (glucose) plus a rise in the feel good hormones which is known as a sugar high. This  is short lasting, causing a rebound effect with low levels of blood sugar and serotonin, a sluggish feeling with an urge to sleep, and a depressed mood known as the sugar blues. Sugar also affects your memory and the size of your hippocampus is smaller  (part of the brain responsible for memory and learning).

Health Tips:  Eat complex carbohydrates as in veggies,, fruits, and ancient grains as complex carbs increase brain levels of serotonin and keep them elevated. Did you know that your brain comprising only 2% of your total body weight, consumes 30% of the calories you take in? Your brain does need glucose, but in the form of complex carbs which are released slowly. When your brain is working optimally, it uses sugar quickly for fuel. If your glucose levels run low, your brain function slows way down causing you to feel tired and foggy. Do yourself a big favor and eat fruit, use cinnamon, cloves, ginger, carob, vanilla bean, and some organic extracts for those sweet flavors you crave. Being healthy is a true gift you give yourself.

How Excess Sugar Affects Your Entire Body

How Excess Sugar Affects Your Entire Body | Dangers of sugar consumption | Scoop.it
The adverse effects a high-sugar diet can have on the human body include more than just obesity.
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Sugar, the "sweet poison" is in the news all the time now which is good for those of you who may be unaware of its inherent dangers to your health.  Did you know that sugar feeds cancer? Your body needs the right fuel to work optimally and sugar isn't it. Sugar steals nutrients from the body, is pro-inflammatory,  and compromises cancer cells. Suzanne Somers advice is to starve sugar out of your body. In other words refuse to eat anything that contains sugar. Years ago in the 1900's only 5 pounds of sugar was consumed in a year by the average person. Today, over 150 pounds of sugar is consumed in a year. This is a staggering amount which has contributed to an epidemic of obesity and chronic disease and not just in the U.S.

Health Tips: Eat fruit. Organic dates, figs, raisins, apples, pears, berries, peaches, apricots, mangos, pineapple, papaya and other fruits are fabulously delicious and you can bake with them.

How Much Sugar Starbucks Actually Pours Into Your Drink

How Much Sugar Starbucks Actually Pours Into Your Drink | Dangers of sugar consumption | Scoop.it
Discover the shocking amount of sugar in your favorite Starbucks beverage--by best-selling author of 60 SECONDS TO SLIM and WEEKEND WONDER DETOX, Dr. Michelle Schoffro Cook, PhD, DNM.
Sandi Cornez's insight:

You know sugar isn't a healthy food and neither are its fake replacements. You know that sugar shows up in many foods in sneaky hidden ways. Therefore it's a no-brainer to realize that your  favorite coffee/tea place also adds huge amounts of sugar to its beverages. How huge? Read the article, you might want to make your own caffeinated beverage or better yet drink healthy filtered water with lemon or slices of frozen fruit. Your choice of course. It's your health. Be wise and save your money. Sugar feeds cancer and causes inflammation in your body which leads to chronic diseases, colds and sickness.

Health Tip:  A 6 ounce cup of coffee is okay without added enhancers like sugar or Nutrasweet. If you want a coffee with added ingredients, make your own with  organic  cinnamon, light coconut milk, liquid stevia or other real food spices. Another alternative is to get your caffeine fix from real dark organic chocolate/raw cacao. A few pieces a day are just the ticket. Make a green or fruit smoothie with no sugar and add raw organic cacao and/or raw carob. Now that's a delicious healthy beverage that will help your body, not harm it.

Research Reveals How Sugar Causes Cancer

Research Reveals How Sugar Causes Cancer | Dangers of sugar consumption | Scoop.it
If you use sugar then this article is a MUST read! New research reveals how sugar causes cancer. Please help us to share this news as you will not see it on TV - please share and like this post.
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Sugar, the sweet poison is nutritionally deficient lacking any semblance of important nutrients your body needs. It is a well known fact that sugar feeds cancer.

Health Tip: Eat regular meals throughout the day and include as many veggies as possible. When you start craving sweets, eat a piece of fruit with some protein. An organic apple with peanut butter or a banana dipped in almond butter and cinnamon are healthier choices. Check to make sure you aren't deficient in important key minerals (magnesium, chromium, zinc, and vanadium). These minerals are involved with glucose metabolism and insulin production and can cause cravings. Sleep is critical too - get 7-9 hours/night.  And please do not use any artificial industry created sweeteners which cause more harmful effects to your body.  Rely on  a few pieces of fruit instead. Want to make a sweet dessert? Think  baked apples/pears, organic walnuts stuffed with organic dates, frozen bananas dipped in organic nut butter with cinnamon and organic raw dark cacao or raw carob. The possibilities are endless - use your imagination or ask your kids to help. There's tons of healthy recipes online.

Here's an information packed article about recent research that backs up the Warburg effect (In the 1930's Otto Warburg described how most cancer cells metabolize sugar. He even won a Nobel Prize for this theory.) And yet here we are in the 21st century still battling cancer while sugar consumption is at an all time high. For much of this nonsense,  you can attribute it to food manufacturers deceitful marketing.  "Research Reveals How Sugar Causes Cancer" from HealthyandNaturalWorld by Jenny Hills.

How Much Sugar Intake Is Actually Safe? » EcoWatch | Dangers of sugar consumption | Scoop.it
Sugars that are naturally present in whole foods like fruit are okay; it’s the sugar added to whole foods that we must worry about. Previously, the World Health Organization said we should
Sandi Cornez's insight:

"Sugar is NOT just an empty calorie" a new catchphrase from Nicolette Hahn Niman is true. Sugar is a neurotoxin that robs your body of a critical nutrient, produces an energy rush, and a taste impact and biochemically is a disaster because it raises glucose levels so fast and so high. This speeds up aging through a free radical activity known as glycation or browning (think of meat that has been overcooked) and contributes to chronic diseases, diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and other disorders associated with blood sugar metabolism. Human bodies were designed to slowly digest starches. The massive increase in glucose resulting from sugar consumption overwhelms the body's ability to maintain an essential balance which produces a roller coaster of energy followed by profound fatigue. When glucose and insulin are high, brain biochemistry may be changed which produces mood swings and confusion.

Health Tips:  Reduce your consumption of all foods that contain labels. Eat real whole plant based foods using fruit for your sweet taste. as in organic dates, mission figs, raisins, berries, pineapple, mangos, papaya, oranges, apricots, peaches, plums, and bananas. Use sparingly Grade B maple syrup, molasses, Stevia, and if you use honey, purchase raw. It is possible to avoid consuming sugar and when you make it a daily habit,  you will  begin to taste what real food was meant to taste like and you will look and feel years younger. 5 Good Reasons to Avoid Refined Sugar

5 Good Reasons to Avoid Refined Sugar | Dangers of sugar consumption | Scoop.it
Refined sugar is bad news for our health. If you’ve been wanting to cut back on sugar but needed some good reasons, we’ve got you covered.
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Refined sugar and/or processed foods all need to be avoided. Refined means the nutrients have been stripped away and then manufacturers replace missing vitamins, minerals with others plus chemicals and additives.. Is this crazy or what? Eat real whole food that is unrefined.

Health Tips:  Swap out sugar, a neurotoxin that feeds cancer  with healthy organic raw dates, figs, bananas, pineapple, mango, berries or other fruits of your choice. You can also use coconut sugar, Grade B Maple syrup (a little as it's 50% fructose), and lucuma found in most healthy markets. Use these sparingly. If you do use organic cane sugar, use just 1/4 cup  and add some applesauce  or a banana to your recipe.

Can you enjoy sweet food and drink without overloading on calories, and is honey really better for you than refined white sugar? Learn how to tell one sweetener from another with our essential guideSugar is sugar, most science now agrees: a simple carbohydrate.
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Sugar anyway you use it is a neuro toxin, a sweet poison that feeds cancer and causes inflammation and disease. Is it any wonder that there is an epidemic of diabetes, obesity, and cancer in the U.S.?

Health Tip:  Want to be healthy, slim and energetic?  Cut out the sweet stuff. Stop buying processed junk fake foods with no nutrients and harmful chemicals. Eat real whole foods, the ones your body craves. When your body gets the nutrients it needs, as in dark leafy greens, dark pigmented veggies and fruits, healthy fats, ancient grains, ; you are adding materials that help protect your cells, nutrients your body recognizes and can use for fuel.

5 Freaky Stats About Added Sugar

5 Freaky Stats About Added Sugar | Dangers of sugar consumption | Scoop.it
We're eating how much?!
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Sugar, also known as "sweet poison" has become one of the worst foods you can consume for your health. And it's not just table sugar but the hidden sugars found in all kinds of processed foods. Adults and children are consuming more of this harmful substance every year with rising rates of obesity, increases in chronic diseases such as Diabetes and heart disease. And of course sugar and its derivatives age you in well defined ways.

Health Tip:  Do your best to eliminate or reduce your sugar consumption as much as you can. Read labels to find sneaky sugar hidden in processed foods. Purchase  real whole food from Mother Nature. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves help to sweeten desserts. Use healthier sweeteners such as raw organic dates, berries, apples, pineapples, mangos, bananas, and figs.

Prevent Diabetes by Avoiding This Sugar-Free Substitute

Millions of people around the world consume diet drinks with artificial sweeteners to lose weight or to prevent diabetes. They are sabotaging their
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Sugar is a known sweet poison and so are sugar free artificial substitutes which have been created in labs by people. This is not food that your body recognizes.

Research done at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel was focused on 3 big fake sweeteners: Aspartame, founding diet drinks,  Saccharin, found in Sweet n'Low, and Sucralose, found in Splenda. All of them raised the risk of Diabetes.

Very interesting side note from the lead researcher, Professor Eran Elinav is that "the link between use of these artificial sweeteners through the bacteria in your gut to a tendency to develop the very disorders they were designed to prevent".

Read this science based article "Prevent Diabetes by Avoiding this sugar Free Substitute"  which states "that the magnitude of the differences between those eating artificial sweeteners and those abstaining were very dramatic differences".

Health Tip: Eat fruit which your body does recognize and can use for fuel. If you have issues with your blood sugar, eat very small amounts of fruit with protein. Real whole food is your best choice to be healthy.

Shocking Foods That Are Loaded With High Fructose Corn Syrup (Sugar)

Shocking Foods That Are Loaded With High Fructose Corn Syrup (Sugar) | Dangers of sugar consumption | Scoop.it

With obesity at an all time high and related diseases like diabetes and metabolic disorder making so many people sick, should we pay more attention to our food labels?

There are so many "diet" foods that have staggering amounts of added sugars in them that people are consuming and assuming are safe to eat.

This is a list of some shocking foods that contain added sugars in the form of high fructose corn syrup that you may have thought were healthy.

Sandi Cornez's insight:

Sugar, the "recreational drug" (from Dr Mark Hyman) is in practically every processed food you can eat or do eat. Many people know by know that refined sugar and its alternative substitutes are toxic to the human body.  For many people consuming sugar is a death sentence as sugar and high glycemic index foods  (a rating system that measures blood sugar response to certain foods)  trigger the release of extra insulin into the bloodstream. Excess blood sugar creates a "browning" as in baked goods. This "browning" is called Glycation, which is in tissues and organs in your body. This glycation generates large amounts of free radicals and inflammation. Glycation accelerates the wrinkling of the skin, the aging of organs and tissues, and lessens blood circulation to all parts of the body, especially the eyes.

The increase in metabolic diseases such as diabetes is a direct result of the massive consumption of sugar and refined carbohydrates (processed foods that have  beneficial fiber removed).

Read this important article about the "Shocking Foods That are Loaded  with High Fructose Corn Syrup (sugar)". from The Weight Loss Lie by Wally. These are the so called "hidden" sugars that you would not expect to find in these particular foods.

Health Tip: If you are addicted to refined sugar and even organic sugar, stop buying processed foods. If you're healthy, eat a mostly plant based "live-t",exercise, and feel younger than you're age, then eat sugar sparingly. Maybe once a month. Or do as this curator does and completely eliminate sugar. Eat organic fruit. Your taste buds will adapt so that you can taste what real food is supposed to taste like. And you will be healthy and experience zestful living.
