ageist person of the year tricia cusden  | Daily News Reads | Scoop.it
“You've got L'Oreal, who have engaged Helen Mirren, the poster girl for the 70-year-old, and she's absolutely beautiful … and they’ve got her in a leather jacket on a bridge, and she’s walking past a younger guy who’s kind of looking at her. She looks at the camera, raises her eyebrow, and it’s almost like Helen Mirren is saying into the camera, ‘I know he thinks I’m still hot,’ ” says Cusden. “And I just think, in what deluded universe do they live in where they believe that most 70-year-old women get out everyday and think, ‘I'm going to put this cream on my face so that younger guys think I'm hot’? It just doesn't happen. It isn't where our heads are at anyway. Really, this just shows the poverty of imagination of a younger ad execs who just can only produce through a younger person's lens. It just doesn't work"

Revenge of the poor: for the first time in India, the rich beg the poor to help them

Revenge of the poor: for the first time in India, the rich beg the poor to help them | Daily News Reads | Scoop.it

Maids, drivers, nannies, and cooks in India are experiencing unusual politeness from their employers. Beyond the work they do every day, they suddenly have another use – to launder the undeclared cash which the rich have been hoarding in steel wardrobes, under the mattress and in under-bed storage.

This sudden outbreak of niceness is the outcome of India's current crackdown on "black money" - income in the form of cash that has not been declared to the tax authorities. On November 8, the day before Sharma's employer became a lamb, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi scrapped 500 and 1000-rupee notes to root out corruption and force more Indians into the tax net.. | read more

The woman wanting a US election recount - over $2.5M raised

The woman wanting a US election recount - over $2.5M raised | Daily News Reads | Scoop.it

Jill Stein (Green Party) will ask for a recount of US election votes to make sure voting systems weren’t hacked. More  than the $2 million needed to request recounts of the votes in the three states that swung the presidential election to Donald Trump has been raised.

Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein said that she will ask for a recount of votes in the battleground states of Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin if she could raise the funds.

Stein launched an online recount fundraising page seeking donations and it has raised more than the $2 million necessary to challenge for a recount in Wisconsin, which has a deadline of Friday.

Stein, who received a negligible number of votes in the three states, said in a statement that she will file for a recount in an “effort to check the accuracy of the machine-counted vote tallies.”
