What happens when humans become more than human? Or when computers surpass humanity to become the dominant 'species' on earth in new cyborg hybrid?

Most scholars believe that the movement of transhumanism was unofficially started in 1923 with J.B.S. Haldane’s essay “Prometheus: Science and the Future”. In this essay, Haldane introduced a notable idea; that current political and economic states made it likely that science will develop on its own. This would allow recent developments in biology to impact political choices. These scientific developments would include topics like Eugenics—something fraught with peril—and ectogenesis (the creation of life within an artificial environment). Haldane’s thoughts would pervade much of science for the next 100 years, creating a sense that mankind was in a perfect environment politically and economically to create the tools that would allow one to overcome their bodily weaknesses and become like Nietzsche’s Supermen.

 

The official founder of transhumanism—and the individual who coined the term—is considered to be biologist Julian Huxley, brother to famous author and activist Aldous Huxley. In a 1957 essay, Huxley presented a new idea:

 

“Up till now human life has generally been, as Hobbes described it, ‘nasty, brutish and short’; the great majority of human beings (if they have not already died young) have been afflicted with misery… we can justifiably hold the belief that these lands of possibility exist, and that the present limitations and miserable frustrations of our existence could be in large measure surmounted… The human species can, if it wishes, transcend itself —- not just sporadically, an individual here in one way, an individual there in another way, but in its entirety, as humanity.”

This belief that humanity has the potential to “transcend” its current state seemed revolutionary.

 

This idea of transcendence would pervade early science fiction as early as the ‘50s and ‘60s. The best example of this thought was Arthur C. Clarke’s book 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). In this novel, the hero finds a technological obelisk on an alien world that provided an opportunity to overcome physical barriers and become a being of pure energy, transcending human evolution. However, Clarke’s understanding of this cultural evolution is not the only one.

 

Another key idea is that artificial intelligence’s mental capabilities will eventually go through a “Singularity”, where the data capability exceeds that of a mortal man. This Singularity is a concept invented by computer scientist Vernor Vinge who predicted the sudden rise of transistors and intelligence in computer brains. From this, futurist Ray Kurzweil suggested that humanity would eventually mix its subconscious with an AI, becoming “one with the machine”. There are multiple variations on these stories, but all of them offer the same result, the ability to gain immortality through technology and overcome human suffering.

Cela dit, les membres de la Singularity University reconnaissent que la tâche ne sera pas aisée. Paradoxalement, le terme de « singularité », emprunté à la physique, désigne un événement sans précédent, d'une telle ampleur qu'il empêche totalement de prévoir ce qui arrivera ensuite – à l'image des phénomènes inconnus se développant aux abords d'un trou noir...

 

Neil Jacobstein n'imagine pas que les technologies exponentielles provoquent un bouleversement aussi radical, mais il entrevoit un risque majeur, déjà évoqué par Ray Kurtzweil, inventeur du concept de singularité dans cette nouvelle acception :

 

« Certains humains s'intégreront de plus en plus aux systèmes d'intelligence artificielle, selon un mode opératoire encore inédit. Par contre, ceux qui seront exclus de ce niveau d'interconnexion avec les machines ne comprendront plus du tout le nouveau monde. »

This essay is a re-writing of “The Funeral Ceremonies of the Parsees,” by Jivanji Jamshedji Modi, originally read before the Anthropological Society of Bombay, on September 30, 1891, a fair-use of that content for creative literary aims. To those of the Zoroastrian faith I apologize for my shameless re-purposing of your time-honored traditions. My rationale for doing so is not to diminish or mock these ceremonies and beliefs, but to help contemporary people who are unfamiliar with these practices to look to the interesting and diverse history of human religion for ideas on how we can better understand and use new technology in a harmonious way.

La la National Science Foundation (NSF) , qui est la plus influente des agences scientifiques fédérales, ajoutait : « Une théorie computationnelle de l’esprit peut nous permettre de développer de nouveaux outils pour guérir ou maîtriser les effets des maladies mentales. Elle sera certainement à même de nous fournir une appréciation plus profonde de ce que nous sommes et sur la place que nous occupons dans l’univers. Comprendre l’esprit et le cerveau nous permettra de créer une nouvelle espèce de machines intelligentes, capable de produire une richesse économique sur une échelle jusqu’alors inimaginable. L’ingénierie de l’esprit est donc beaucoup plus que la poursuite d’une curiosité scientifique, beaucoup plus qu’un monumental défi technologique. C’est l’occasion d’éradiquer la pauvreté et d’ouvrir un âge d’or pour l’humanité tout entière ».

 

L’aspect quelque peu messianique de ce passage peut frapper, et il faut savoir que le concept même de NBIC a été critiqué. On lui reproche notamment d’être avant tout un concept marketing, forgé de toutes pièces par les promoteurs américains des nanotechnologies et des biotechs afin de décrocher des crédits publics, mais qui ne repose sur aucune réalité scientifique. Dans les faits, entre les nanotechnologies, biotechnologies, informatique et sciences cognitives on peut certainement repérer des convergences deux à deux (par exemple entre les sciences de l’information et les nanotechnologies), mais rien qui soit à l’intersection des quatre domaines considérés. Au Japon, pays qui a énormément investi sur ces différentes technologies, le concept n’existe pas !

MindRDR, as the app is called, links up Google Glass with another piece of head-mounted hardware, the Neurosky EEG biosensor, to create a communication loop.

 

The Neurosky biosensor picks up on brainwaves that correlate to your ability to focus. The app then translates these brainwaves into a meter reading that gets superimposed on the camera view in Google Glass. As you “focus” more with your mind, the meter goes up, and the app takes a photograph of what you are seeing in front of you.

Before 2013, all purchases of Google were intended to develop and optimize services directly related to Internet (its core business), either in the domain of pictures, or data processing, web analytics, map software, ads, blogging…

 

But till 2013, Google seems to have completely changed its purchasing policy, and companies bought by Google are now related to various domains in addition to robotics, such as neural networks (DNNResearch), natural language understanding (Wavii), renewable energy  (Makani Power), wearable computing (WIMM Labs), movement/facial recognition (Flutter, Viewdle), home automation (Nest Labs), etc…

 

Google’s business is in mutation: this company is not focused on the IT domain only but also in the promising field of NBIC. The Nanotechnologies (N), Biology (B), Information technologies (I) and Cognitive sciences (artificial intelligence and brain-related sciences) (C) are improving and converging, in a sense that discoveries in a domain are serving the others domains, and this synergy allow fantastic advances.

Krichmar and his team are experimenting with robotic awareness and trying to teach mechanical brains to behave more like human and animal brains by programming traits that mimic obsessive-compulsive disorder or a fear of open spaces.

 

For instance, the team studied the actions of neurotransmitter chemicals serotonin and dopamine in mice as the animals solved a maze or reacted to an unfamiliar environment. Neurotransmitters are the chemicals that combine to constitute awareness and to contribute to our senses of pleasure and well-being.

Oculus has found a way to make a headset that does more than just hang a big screen in front of your face. By combining stereoscopic 3-D, 360-degree visuals, and a wide field of view—along with a supersize dose of engineering and software magic—it hacks your visual cortex. As far as your brain is concerned, there’s no difference between experiencing something on the Rift and experiencing it in the real world.

ANATOMY OF THE RIFT

 

The Brain.

The biggest challenge in creating realistic VR is getting the image to change with your head movements, precisely and without any perceptible lag. The Rift fuses readings from a gyroscope, accelerometer, and magnetometer to evaluate head motion. Even better, it takes 1,000 readings a second, allowing it to predict motion and pre-­render images, shaving away precious milliseconds of latency.

 

The Display.

Even the best LCD can take 15 milliseconds for all its pixels to change color. The Rift uses AMOLED screens, which can switch color in less than a millisecond. Oculus also figured out how to deactivate those pixels rapidly so the image doesn’t smear or shake when you whip your head around.

 

The Optics.

You want an image that fills your entire field of vision without distortion. Typically that requires heavy, expensive lenses. The Rift uses a pair of cheap magnifying lenses, and Oculus developers distort their games so they look right when viewed through the optics.

 

Positional Tracking.

Previous VR headsets let you look around but not move around. The Rift’s small exter­nal camera monitors 40 infrared LEDs on the headset, tracking motion and letting you crouch, lean, or approach an in-game object.

The DEKA arm, funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), is an upper-limb prosthetic designed to restore near-natural control to amputees. The high-tech limb can handle objects as delicate as a grape or as hefty as a power tool, researchers said.

The results say that she is highly likely to damage her pelvic floor muscles during the birth and will probably suffer from incontinence years later. Armed with this information, doctors intervene to minimise the damage as her baby is born, and the problems are avoided.

The University of Sheffield’s Insigneo Institute, which was founded exactly a year ago, comprises 123 academics and clinicians who are working towards a grand European Commission-backed endeavour known as the Virtual Physiological Human programme. Collectively, they have already won more than £20 million in research funding.

The programme’s ultimate aim is to create an in silico, or computer simulated, replica of the human body that will allow the virtual testing of treatments on patients based on their own specific needs – potentially predicting future problems they may encounter or eliminating the need for invasive procedures.

Despite the advent of wearable technologies, the thought of humans becoming part machine remains in the realm of science fiction. But we might be farther along in this process than you’d expect, especially after digging deeper into the concept that many are calling “Augmented Sensory Perception,” where technology is not just biometrically attuned to humans but also embedded in their bodies.


Since the 1980s, Steven Mann, often referred to as the father of wearable computing, has been tinkering with the concept of cyborgs and the idea of “humanistic intelligence.” The theory goes that by including humans in the feedback loop of the computational process, the technology and the individual become inextricably intertwined.  You can see this idea emerging at the fringes of wearable technology, where developers are viewing the limits of human ability as a starting place. This is entry point could lead to devices that extend our own physical capacities.

Google vous connaîtra mieux que votre compagne ou compagnon, mieux que vous-même probablement », a fièrement déclaré Ray Kurzweil, lequel est également persuadé que l’on pourra transférer notre mémoire et notre conscience dans des microprocesseurs dès 2045, ce qui permettrait à notre esprit de survivre à notre mort biologique. L’informatique et la neurologie ne feront qu’un !

Here are the most important beliefs of cybernetic totalism:

 

1) That cybernetic patterns of information provide the ultimate and best way to understand reality.


2) That people are no more than cybernetic patterns.


3) That subjective experience either doesn’t exist, or is unimportant because it is some sort of ambient or peripheral effect.


4) That what Darwin described in biology, or something like it, is in fact also the singular, superior description of all creativity and culture.


5) That qualitative as well as quantitative aspects of information systems will be accelerated by Moore’s Law.

 

And finally, the most dramatic:

6) That biology and physics will merge with computer science (becoming biotechnology and nanotechnology), resulting in life and the physical universe becoming mercurial; achieving the supposed nature of computer software. Furthermore, all of this will happen very soon! Since computers are improving so quickly, they will overwhelm all the other cybernetic processes, like people, and will fundamentally change the nature of what’s going on in the familiar neighborhood of Earth at some moment when a new “criticality”is achieved- maybe in about the year 2020. To be a human after that moment will be either impossible or something very different than we now can know.

Ce test, élaboré en 1950, est censé déterminer si un ordinateur est capable de reproduire la pensée humaine. Mais les détails de cette réussite sont très flous.

Ce n'est pas la première fois qu'un succès à ce test est annoncé, mais, selon l'université de Reading, c'est la première fois que les sujets de discussion n'étaient pas fixés à l'avance.

 

Outre des critiques de longue date concernant la validité et la portée réelle du test de Turing (ainsi que la forme qu'a voulu lui donner son créateur – notamment concernant le seuil de 30 % d'humains convaincus qui serait issu d'une interprétation un peu large d'une citation de Turing), des voix se sont élevées pourminimiser l'exploit d'Eugene. Le Daily Telegraph, notamment, pointe plusieurs biais importants :

 

- Le programme se faisait passer pour un jeune garçon, une interprétation du test qui le rend plus facile à réussir, les interlocuteurs humains étant plus susceptibles d'attribuer les défauts d'une conversation à ce jeune âge.

 

- Même type de critique concernant la nationalité prêtée au programme : n'étant pas censé être anglophone, il a été plus facile de « duper » les humains.

J'ai assisté à la conférence grand public sur le vieillissement, du colloque BIOVISION de Lyon. Laurent Alexandre, le créateur de "Doctissimo" a présenté le nouveau courrant made in silicone-vallée : le transhumanisme. Un mouvement qui revendique de faire vivre les hommes, pourquoi pas, à terme, MILLE ANS, grâce au rapiéçage, bionique, génétique et tout les "iques" que Google et ses petits copains inventeront. Dans quel monde vivent-t-ils ? Même si cela devenait techniquement possible, comment peuvent-ils croire que ce caprice de riches pourrait être éthiquement et socialement acceptable

Google , l'optimiseur fiscal, qui arrache des millions à l'intérêt général , serait le sauveur de l'humanité. Cette promesse de quasi éternité ne serait pas un marketing pour s'assurer des clients captifs à perpétuité et les profits qui vont avec. Parrions que les coeurs artificiels, les cellules souches et autres merveilles ne seront pas gratuites. Je doute que le travailleur du Bangladesh ou le chômeur américain aient les moyens de s'offrir ces piéces de rechange. Sans parler des matiéres  premières forcement insuffisantes (même avec des nanotechnologies) si les quelques milliards d'humains devaient en profiter. D'autre part que deviendrait la démographie et la pyramide des ages avec ces vies sans fin ?

In a paper published on Thursday in the journal Science, physicists at the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience at the Delft University of Technology reported that they were able to reliably teleport information between two quantum bits separated by three meters, or about 10 feet.

 

Quantum teleportation is not the “Star Trek”-style movement of people or things; rather, it involves transferring so-called quantum information — in this case what is known as the spin state of an electron — from one place to another without moving the physical matter to which the information is attached.

 

Classical bits, the basic units of information in computing, can have only one of two values — either 0 or 1. But quantum bits, or qubits, can simultaneously describe many values. They hold out both the possibility of a new generation of faster computing systems and the ability to create completely secure communication networks.

Et si les robots remplaçaient définitivement l'homme. L'idée devient de moins en moins farfelue : Deep Knowledge Ventures (DKV), entreprise de Hongkong spécialisée dans la gestion de dons à haut risque, vient de nommer au conseil d'administration un robot appelé Vital (Validating Investment Tool for Advancing Life Sciences). Il veillera à préserver les intérêts financiers de l'entreprise et à déterminer les investissements les plus rentables, en bonne intelligence... artificielle.

Neuromancien, RoboCop, Ghost in the Shell, Deus Ex... Les concepts évoqués dans ces œuvres de fiction, de l'interface neuronale à la réalité augmentée sans oublier les exosquelettes, les prothèses biomécaniques ou les modifications nanotechnologiques, sont en effet désormais à notre portée, quand elles ne sont pas déjà implémentées. Cela passe par les smartphones devenus indispensables et par l'essor des objets connectés : smartwatches, lunettes (voire lentilles), vêtements. Mais aussi et surtout par les progrès effectués dans le domaine médical, qu'il s'agisse de génétique ou de bionique.

Is it possible to develop “moral” autonomous robots with a sense for right, wrong, and the consequences of both?

 

Researchers from Tufts University, Brown University, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute think so, and are teaming with the U.S. Navy to explore technology that would pave the way to do exactly that.

“Moral competence can be roughly thought about as the ability to learn, reason with, act upon, and talk about the laws and societal conventions on which humans tend to agree,” says principal investigator Matthias Scheutz, professor of computer science at Tufts School of Engineering and director of the Human-Robot Interaction Laboratory (HRI Lab) at Tufts.

 

“The question is whether machines — or any other artificial system, for that matter — can emulate and exercise these abilities.”

But since there’s no universal agreement on the morality of laws and societal conventions, this raises some interesting questions. Was HAL 9000 (HAL = (Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer) moral? Who defines morality?

This science-fiction infomercial was made to raise awareness of the fact that bees—which are crucial for the survival of all species, including ours*—are dying all around the world. The fact is that this video isn't too far from the truth: bees may go extinct if we don't act promptly and scientists are already working on robotic replacements.

 

Scientists at Harvard University have already created the alpha version of these robotic bees, created for "rescue operations and artificial pollination."
