Sharla Shults's curator insight, April 19, 2013 3:16 PM

Bullying can affect everyone—those who are bullied, those who bully, and those who witness bullying and is linked to many negative outcomes. Take children's complaints of bullying seriously, whether at school, on the playground, in the park, on the Internet. Probing a seemingly minor complaint may uncover more severe grievances. Children are often afraid or ashamed to tell anyone that they have been bullied, so listen to their complaints!

These are some interesting facts about cyberbullying in America that instead of being hurt by being bullied most of those surveyed felt angry.

We can come up with hundreds of ways to raise awareness on cyberbullying, but how do we actually know that people are getting the message? The best way is to give students, teachers and parents the most knowledge on cyberbullying, so that we can take the topic more seriously. The Big March is a virtual  protest against cyberbullying that contains:

     - An EU conference

     - An awareness raising video in 10 different languages

     - A virtual Big March against cyberbullying

     - A free app available in Google Play store

The project contains a video that shows what the Big March is all about. A group of students who are left with bruises, scars and tears, all walking in one direction while dressed in their school uniforms. The video shows unity, courage and strength from the ones effected by bullying.

Cyberbullying: 5 Steps to Combating & Documenting

Cyberbullying: 5 Steps to Combating & Documenting | Cyberbullying, it's not a game! It's your Life!!! | Scoop.it

While starting a new school year can be exciting and fun, it can also be tough for children of any age — dealing with new teachers and new students, and continuing the friendships (and rivalries) that they formed during the previous year. But these days it’s even more difficult for students as school dynamics and drama have a significant presence online, essentially coming home with the child through digital devices and social media.

Cyberbullying is probably the most threatening issue that children face when they’re online, and social networks play a significant role in the severity of this issue. For the same advantageous reasons that make social media a great tool to help victims of cyberbullying, it can also be used to perpetrate cyberbullying, especially among teens. According to the Teen Internet Behavior study that was conducted by McAfee, “Almost one in four teens claimed to be a target of cyberbullying and two-thirds of all teens have witnessed cruel behavior online”.
