A Wonderful Poster on Learning Styles | Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

A Wonderful Poster on Learning Styles | Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Cyber Arts | Scoop.it

They say diversity is the spice of life but in schools diversity is the backbone of learning. Have a look at your classroom, you will see a wide range of varying learning styles. But , as a teacher, do you tend to these learning styles ? Have you ever questioned whether your teaching method(s) really meet the learning needs of all your students or just a select few ? Answering these questions requires a little insight from both cognitive psychology and learning pedagogy.

A mixture of these  two fields of study results in a direct application of Howard Gardner Multiple Intelligences ( cognitive psychology ) within a classroom context ( learning styles ). Educational Technology and Mobile Learning has previously, and  in several posts, featured some awesome posters on multiple intelligence and today I am sharing with you another equally interesting graphic on the different learning styles your students have. Please have a look and share with us your views. Enjoy

Ultraviolet light reveals how ancient Greek statues really looked | io9

Ultraviolet light reveals how ancient Greek statues really looked | io9 | Cyber Arts | Scoop.it

Original Greek statues were brightly painted, but after thousands of years, those paints have worn away. Find out how shining a light on the statues can be all that's required to see them as they were thousands of years ago.

Although it seems impossible to think that anything could be left to discover after thousands of years of wind, sun, sand, and art students, finding the long lost patterns on a piece of ancient Greek sculpture can be as easy as shining a lamp on it. A technique called ‘raking light' has been used to analyze art for a long time. A lamp is positioned carefully enough that the path of the light is almost parallel to the surface of the object. When used on paintings, this makes brushstrokes, grit, and dust obvious. On statues, the effect is more subtle. Brush-strokes are impossible to see, but because different paints wear off at different rates, the stone is raised in some places – protected from erosion by its cap of paint – and lowered in others.

Ultraviolet is also used to discern patterns. UV light makes many organic compounds fluoresce. Art dealers use UV lights to check if art has been touched up, since older paints have a lot of organic compounds and modern paints have relatively little. On ancient Greek statues, tiny fragments of pigment still left on the surface glow bright, illuminating more detailed patterns.

Once the pattern is mapped, there is still the problem of figuring out which paint colors to use. A series of dark blues will create a very different effect than gold and pink. Even if enough pigment is left over so that the naked eye can make out a color, a few thousand years can really change a statue's complexion. There's no reason to think that color seen today would be anything like the hues the statues were originally painted.

There is a way around this dilemma. The colors may fade over time, but the original materials – plant and animal-derived pigments, crushed stones or shells – still look the same today as they did thousands of years ago. This can also be discovered using light.

Intelligent Content: Soon your media will know you better than you know yourself | paidContent.org | Cyber Arts | Scoop.it

With the introduction of analytics into the visual design of written content, we are on the cusp of an era of incredible evolution: one where the design of information changes in real time in response to data about the readers consuming it.

New technologies from Amazon, Apple, Google, WordPress and Tumblr already provide a preview of Intelligent Content. In essence, it won’t be long before the media we consume knows us better than we know ourselves.

Paulo Moekotte's curator insight, April 15, 2013 9:14 AM

The web literacy standards can be considered a part of general information literacy and digital literacy, focussing espescially on web based information.

As Belshaw puts it himself:

"A framework for Web Literacy is always going to be what I’d term a ‘convenient hypocrisy’. There’s so many different things we could include – and so many ways of learning it – that a truly comprehensive framework would be impossible to represent. We’re limited to two, or at best three, dimensions when representing a learning standard for Web Literacy!"

This argument is in line with his approach of digital literacy in his thesis "What is ‘digital literacy’?":

"Whilst a definition of digital literacies should be produced by the above process it should (as befits the Pragmatic methodology of this thesis) be provisional and revisable. In other words, those looking to develop digital literacies should understand that the ground is currently shifting under their feet."
