Massive Data Flow: Understanding the Complex Dynamics of the Web

The Web is perhaps the most complex system that we know. Its massive scale, complex dynamism, open richness, and social character mean that it may be more profitable to study it using tools and concepts appropriate for understanding nervous systems, organisms, ecosystems and society, rather than approaches more traditionally employed to engineer technology. Simultaneously, the scientists trying to understand this wide array of complex natural systems may have much to gain by considering the emergingstudy of the Web.

NECSI Summer School 2014

These courses are intended for faculty, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, professionals and others who would like to gain an understanding of the fundamentals of complex systems for application to research in their respective fields, or as a basis for pursuing complex systems research.

The summer school offers two intensive week-long courses. The courses consist of lectures, discussions, and supervised group projects. Though the second week builds on material covered in the previous week, one is not a prerequisite for the other. You may register for either or both weeks. If desired, arrangements for credit at a home institution may be made in advance.

2014 5 Day Workshop: Biological and Bio-Inspired Information Theory, Banff

Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery, in Banff, Alberta, Canada
Complexity Digest's insight:

Currently, research in the community is organized into three streams:
• Information theory and biochemistry (including information theory and intercellular communication);
• Information theory and neuroscience; and
• Information-theoretic analysis of biologically-inspired communication systems (including nanonetworking and design of biologically implemented information processing networks).

We propose a BIRS workshop to explore these streams, focusing on mathematical open problems that cut across the streams. The main objectives of this workshop would be: to bring together the most prominent researchers in this field; to discuss and review the current state of mathematical research in this field; to promote cross-pollination among the various streams of research to find common problems; and to collectively identify key future directions or open problems that would bring the greatest impact to this field over the next few years.

SocInfo 2014 | 6th international conference on Social Informatics

We are delighted to welcome the 6th International Conference on Social Informatics (SocInfo 2014) to Barcelona, Spain, from November 10th to November 13th.SocInfo is an interdisciplinary venue for researchers from Computer Science, Informatics, Social Sciences and Management Sciences to share ideas and opinions, and present original research work on studying the interplay between socially-centric platforms and social phenomena. The ultimate goal of Social Informatics is to create better understanding of socially-centric platforms not just as a technology, but also as a set of social phenomena. To that end, we are inviting interdisciplinary papers, on applying information technology in the study of social phenomena, on applying social concepts in the design of information systems, on applying methods from the social sciences in the study of social computing and information systems, on applying computational algorithms to facilitate the study of social systems and human social dynamics, and on designing information and communication technologies that consider social context.

FROM ANIMALS TO ANIMATS 13

The 13th International Conference on the SIMULATION OF ADAPTIVE BEHAVIOR (SAB2014)
22-26 July 2014, Castellon, Spain

http://www.sab2014.org/

The objective of this interdisciplinary conference is to bring together researchers in computer science, artificial intelligence, alife, control, robotics, neurosciences, ethology, evolutionary biology, and related fields so as to further our understanding of the behaviors and underlying mechanisms that allow natural and artificial animals to adapt and survive in uncertain environments. The conference will focus on experiments with well-defined models --- robot models, computer simulation models, mathematical models --- designed to help characterize and compare various organizational principles or architectures underlying adaptive behavior in real animals and in synthetic agents, the animats.
