Silent Transformations

Silent Transformations | CxConferences | Scoop.it

The fifth Para Limes complexity conference is about Silent Transformations.
Silent transformations refer to processes that take place over long time spans, and that go mostly unnoticed until its effects become visible.

An uncountable number of such processes has been shaping and are shaping our universe, our world and our lives. Some of them we have recognized and are studying, like evolution, growing older or climate change. Others we are starting to recognize, like computation changing science, or IT transforming our lives. And still others we have no idea about. Some transformations have an almost timeless character and have nothing to do with humanity and its actions or concerns, like the unfolding of the universe or evolution. Others have a much shorter time line and are very much associated with human actions and concerns, like traffic becoming autonomous, or growing older. Still others are associated with human actions that fingerprint natural processes like climate change, environmental evolution and extinctions.

Special Session On “Big data in complex systems, network theory, cybernetics, and artificial life”

CALL FOR PAPERS

Complex systems have been studied for some time, but it was not until recently that sampling complex systems became possible, systems ranging from computational methods such as high-throughput biology, to systems with sufficient storage capacity to store and analyze prize market transactions. The advent of Big Data is therefore the result of the availability of computing power to process these complex systems, from social to economic, from physical to biological systems. Much has been said on the importance of being able to deal with large amounts of data but little about how to model, represent and better analyze the dynamics of complex systems. The special session will stimulate a strong national participation. Challenges in Mexico represent a great opportunity for complex systems research and theory development to tackle current and future challenges of the country and the future world ranging from biodiversity, security, social impact, population dynamics, epidemiology, genetic modified food, technology development, cultural aspects, violence, waste disposal and so on. Topics of interest are not limited to basic and applied research in complexity science and artificial life from the perspectives of computer science, mathematics, physics, biology and the social sciences.

The 14th International Conference on the Simulation of Adaptive Behavior (SAB2016)

The objective of this interdisciplinary conference is to bring together researchers in computer science, artificial intelligence, artificial life, control, robotics, neurosciences, ethology, evolutionary biology, and related fields in order to further our understanding of the behaviours and underlying mechanisms that allow natural and artificial animals to adapt and survive in uncertain environments. The conference will focus on experiments with well-defined models - robot models, computer simulation models, mathematical models - designed to help characterize and compare various organizational principles or architectures underlying adaptive behaviour in real animals and in synthetic agents, the animats.

ALife & Society Session @ALifeXV

Many of the grand challenges that society faces are concerned with understanding, managing and indeed creating complex living, lifelike or hybrid systems at multiple scales. Conventional approaches have often been unsuccessful in dealing with the inherent non-linearity, adaptability and self-organised behaviours of these systems. In fact the underlying technologies often transform the involved organizations and society as a whole. New paradigms are clearly required and we believe that the ALife community can play a key role.

Mathematical Biosciences Institute :: Workshop 4: Control and Observability of Network Dynamics

Workshop "Control and Observability of Network Dynamics” April 11  - 15, 2016

Mathematical Biosciences Institute (MBI), The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH
Organizers: Reka Albert, John Baillieul, and Adilson E. Motter

Control and dynamical systems go hand in hand in biology. Dynamic networks and processes that occur on them can be used to describe many biological processes. Understanding the emergent properties of these systems, how they are influenced, and how one might influence them lends itself to ideas of mathematical control theory. Throughout biology, it is important to use control to achieve desired dynamics and prevent undesired behaviors. Thus, the study of network control is significant both to reveal naturally evolved control mechanisms that underlie the functioning of biological systems and to develop human-designed control interventions to recover lost function, mitigate failures, or repurpose biological networks. Application areas include cell biology, neuroscience, and ecology as well as bioinspired engineering applications. This workshop will stimulate progress by promoting interactions between experts working in these disparate fields, thereby facilitating the combination of approaches from different domains and the integration of system-specific knowledge about biological or bio-inspired networks

NTU 2016 Winter School

NTU 2016 Winter School | CxConferences | Scoop.it

What is complexity science? What are complex systems? And why do physicists like Stephen Hawking and Heinz Pagels think complexity science will be a dominant force, not only in shaping our pursuit of scientific truth, but also in changing how we think about societies, and our place in them?

The 2016 Winter School provides an overview of complexity and complex systems science that empowers participants search for their own answers to these questions. The knowledge gained will enable participants to apply complexity science ideas in their own domains.

Essentially, the school will:

• Teach basic aspects of complexity and complex systems, answering the question: What makes a system complex? Aspects that will be covered include nonlinearity, order disorder & chaos, emergence and complex adaptive systems

• Introduce methods, models and simulation tools to study the behaviours of complex systems and provide hands-on experience on through the use of software for building, simulating and visualizing complex networks. Participants are encouraged to bring their own data, work in groups mentored by instructors. Participants will then have the opportunity to present their own findings at the end of the week long course.
• Provide insights into how complexity manifests itself in real life e.g. politics & governance, eco-systems, cities and spreading phenomena such as rumours, epidemics, economics and innovation.
