Call for Satellites: Conference on Complex Systems 2017

Call for Satellites: Conference on Complex Systems 2017 | CxConferences | Scoop.it
As usual with the Conferences on Complex Systems, apart form the main tracks of the conference, there will be two full days of satellites (Wednesday, September 20th and Thursday, September 21st). We therefore call for satellite proposals for half a day or full day events. Satellite organizers are responsible for promoting, organizing, reviewing, and scheduling their session.

Scientifically sound proposals should be less than 1000 words, including scope of the satellite, goals, tentative program (format, half-day/full day, invited speakers), estimated attendance, and organizers.

Proposals should be submitted in PDF format to satellites@ccs17.unam.mx

NTU Winter School 2017

NTU Winter School 2017 | CxConferences | Scoop.it
The 2017 Winter School provides an overview of complexity and complex systems science that empowers participants search for their own answers to these questions. The knowledge gained will enable participants to apply complexity science ideas in their own domains.

Essentially, the school will:

Teach basic aspects of complexity and complex systems, answering the question: What makes a system complex? Aspects that will be covered include nonlinearity, order disorder & chaos, emergence and complex adaptive systems
Introduce methods, models and simulation tools to study the behaviours of complex systems and provide hands-on experience on through the use of software for building, simulating and visualizing complex networks. Participants are encouraged to bring their own data, work in groups mentored by instructors. Participants will then have the opportunity to present their own findings at the end of the week long course.
Provide insights into how complexity manifests itself in real life e.g. politics & governance, eco-systems, cities and spreading phenomena such as rumours, epidemics, economics and innovation.

7th Recurrence Plot Symposium 2017

August 23-25, 2017

São Paulo, Brazil

The objective of this Seventh Recurrence Plot Symposium is to encourage the exchange of knowledge and new ideas among scientists working in scientific disciplines of time- and spatial-series analyses. Recurrence plots and their quantifications are general methods for visualizing and analyzing both linear and nonlinear time-series data. After 30 years we continue to witness ongoing technical developments related to recurrence plots in both theoretical and practical domains. Some of these include: linkage of recurrence plots to network theory, inferences regarding directional couplings, identification of various spatio-temporal chaotic patterns, realization of tetherings across multiple scales of emergence, etc. Applications of recurrence plots are ever-expanding into such areas like mathematics, neuroscience, physiology, psychology, weather and climate patterns, financial systems, and linguistics. This symposium will provide a unique forum to facilitate the correlation of recent theoretical developments in recurrence science with applications from various and diverse fields of inquiry. We welcome both theoretical and applied contributions that effectively implement recurrence plots, recurrence quantifications and their related methodologies.

GEFENOL Summer School 2017

GEFENOL Summer School 2017 | CxConferences | Scoop.it
Statistical Physics, which was born as an attempt to explain thermodynamic properties of systems from its atomic and molecular components, has evolved into a solid body of knowledge that allows for the understanding of macroscopic collective phenomena. The tools developed by the Statistical Physics together with the Theory of Dynamical Systems are of key importance in the understanding of Complex Systems which are characterized by the emergent and collective phenomena of many interacting units. While the basic body of knowledge of Statistical Physics and Dynamical Systems is well described in textbooks at undergraduate or master level, the applications to open problems in the context of Complex Systems are well beyond the scope of those textbooks. Aiming at bridging this gap the Topical Group on Statistical and Non Linear Physics (GEFENOL)  of the Royal Spanish Physical Society is promoting the Summer School on Statistical Physics of Complex Systems series, open to PhD students and young postdocs world-wide.
