Opportunities and challenges for implementing highly complex, efficient, and dependable business and control systems have been steadily increasing, driven by the continuous growth in the power, intelligence, adaptiveness and openness of technologies and standards applied in computing, communication and control systems. Dynamically changing social and economic situations demand the next-generation of systems to be based on adaptive, reusable, and internet and Web-enabled technologies and applications. Such systems are expected to have the characteristics of living systems composed of largely autonomous and decentralized components. Such systems are called Autonomous Decentralized Systems (ADS). The International Symposium on Autonomous Decentralized System (ISADS) has been the premier events in the past twenty-two years to have successfully addressed these challenges. The 11th ISADS 2013 will continue to focus on the advancements and innovations in ADS concepts, technologies, applications strategic issues, and other related topics. The special topic for ISADS 2013 is the smart cities and e-applications.

Modeling and Visualizing Science and Technology Developments

This colloquium brings together researchers and practitioners from multiple disciplines to present, discuss, and advance computational models and visualizations of science and technology (S&T). Existing computational models are being applied by academia, government, and industry to explore questions such as: What jobs will exist in ten years and what career paths lead to success? Which types of institutions will likely be most innovative in the future? How will the higher education cost bubble burst affect these institutions? What funding strategies have the highest return on investment? How will changing demographics, alternative economic growth trajectories, and relationships among nations impact answers to these and other questions? Large‐scale datasets (e.g., publications, patents, funding, clinical trials, stock market, social media data) can now be utilized to simulate the structure and evolution of S&T. Advances in computational power have created the possibility of implementing scalable, empirically validated computational models. However, because the databases are massive and multidimensional, both the data and the models tend to exceed human comprehension. How can advances in data visualizations be effectively employed to communicate the data, the models, and the model results to diverse stakeholder groups? Who will be the users of next generation models and visualizations and what decisions will they be addressing

NERCCS 2018: First Northeast Regional Conference on Complex Systems

NERCCS 2018: The First Northeast Regional Conference on Complex Systems aims to establish a venue of interdisciplinary scholarly exchange for complex systems researchers in the Northeast U.S. region to share their research outcomes through presentations and post-conference online publications, network with their peers in the region, and promote inter-campus collaboration and the growth of the research community.

NERCCS will particularly focus on facilitating the professional growth of early career faculty, postdocs, and students in the region who have only limited resources but will likely play a leading role in the field of complex systems science and engineering in the coming years.

The conference will be held in the Innovative Technologies Complex at Binghamton University, which is within driving distance from all major urban areas in the U.S. Northeast region.

"Complexity, Criticality & Computation" (C3-2017) International Biannual Symposium

Complex systems is a new approach to science, engineering, health and management that studies how relationships between parts give rise to the collective emergent behaviours of the entire system, and how the system interacts with its environment.

What makes a system ‘complex’? A system can be thought of as complex if its dynamics cannot be easily predicted, or explained, as a linear summation of the individual dynamics of its components. In other words, the many constituent microscopic parts bring about macroscopic phenomena that cannot be understood by considering a single part alone (‘the whole is more than the sum of the parts’). There is a growing awareness that complexity is strongly related to criticality: the behaviour of dynamical spatiotemporal systems at an order/disorder phase transition where scale invariance prevails.

Complex systems can also be viewed as distributed information-processing systems, particularly in the domains of computational neuroscience, health, bioinformatics, systems biology and artificial life. Consciousness emerging from neuronal activity and interactions, cell behaviour resultant from gene regulatory networks and swarming behaviour are all examples of global system behaviour emerging as a result of the local interactions of the individuals (neurons, genes, animals). Can these interactions be seen as a generic computational process? This question shapes the third component of our symposium, linking computation to complexity and criticality.

We will consider a diverse range of systems, applications, theoretical and practical approaches to computational modelling of modern complex systems, including information theory, agent-based simulation, network theory, nonlinear dynamics, swarm intelligence, evolutionary methods, computational neuroscience, and econophysics, among others.

The flagship conference of the Complex Systems Society will go to Latin America for the first time in 2017. The Mexican complex systems community is enthusiast to welcome colleagues to one of our richest destinations: Cancun.

Information Processing in Complex Systems - satellite workshop of CCS 2017

All systems in nature can be considered from the perspective that they process information. Information is registered in the state of a system and its elements, implicitly and invisibly. As elements interact, information is transferred. Indeed, bits of information about the state of one element will travel – imperfectly – to the state of the other element, forming its new state. This storage and transfer of information, possibly between levels of a multi level system, is imperfect due to randomness or noise. From this viewpoint, a system can be formalized as a collection of bits that is organized according to its rules of dynamics and its topology of interactions. Mapping out exactly how these bits of information percolate through the system reveals fundamental insights in how the parts orchestrate to produce the properties of the system.

 

A theory of information processing would be capable of defining a set of universal properties of dynamical multi level complex systems, which describe and compare the dynamics of diverse complex systems ranging from social interaction to brain networks, from financial markets to biomedicine. Each possible combination of rules of dynamics and topology of interactions, with disparate semantics could be translated into the language of information processing which in turn will provide a lingua franca for complex systems.

Urban climate is determined by a variety of factors, whose knowledge can help to attenuate heat stress in the context of ongoing urbanization and climate change. We study the influence of city size and urban form on the Urban Heat Island (UHI) phenomenon in Europe and find a complex interplay between UHI intensity and city size, fractality, and anisometry. Due to correlations among these urban factors, interactions in the multi-linear regression need to be taken into account. We find that among the largest 5,000 cities, the UHI intensity increases with the logarithm of the city size and with the fractal dimension, but decreases with the logarithm of the anisometry. Typically, the size has the strongest influence, followed by the compactness, and the smallest is the influence of the degree to which the cities stretch. Accordingly, from the point of view of UHI alleviation, small, disperse, and stretched cities are preferable. However, such recommendations need to be balanced against e.g. positive agglomeration effects of large cities. Therefore, trade-offs must be made regarding local and global aims.

The Ninth International Conference on Guided Self-Organisation (GSO-2018) : Information Geometry and Statistical Physics

The goal of Guided Self-Organization (GSO) is to leverage the strengths of self-organization (i.e., its simplicity, parallelization, adaptability, robustness, scalability) while still being able to direct the outcome of the self-organizing process. GSO typically has the following features:

(i) An increase in organization (i.e., structure and/or functionality) over time;

(ii) Local interactions that are not explicitly guided by any external agent;

(iii) Task-independent objectives that are combined with task-dependent constraints.

GSO-2018 is the 9th conference in a bi-annual series on GSO. Recent research is starting to indicate that information geometry, nonequilibrium statistical physics in general, and the thermodynamics of computation in particular, all play a key role in GSO. Accordingly, a particular focus of this conference will be the interplay of those three topics as revealed by their relationship with GSO.

One of the most frequently used scientific words, is the word “Entropy”. The reason is that it is related to two main scientific domains: physics and information theory. Its origin goes back to the start of physics (thermodynamics), but since Shannon, it has become related to information theory. This conference is the official annual conference of the Complex Systems Society and is scheduled to convene in September 17-22, 2017. The conference is interdisciplinary in nature, focusing on understanding how elements interact to give rise to global properties, along with how global properties can constrain these elements.

Overview

Across an increasingly broad spectrum of everyday life, artificial intelligence (AI) is challenging the utility of human intelligence. Yet modern AI often gains its power from exploiting big data resulting from human collective behaviors (e.g. web posting, crowdsourcing). Hence, while AI is often contrasted with human intelligence, both may be more synergistic than is usually admitted. We call for a reflection, on designs and processes that may oppose, or support, the intersection of AI and human intelligence, working towards an AI-enhanced, hybrid collective intelligence.

Submission Guidelines

We invite abstracts (~500 words; 1 Figure) for oral presentations (~20 min.) of work that address relevant challenges across a range of socio-technical domains including, but not limited to:​

  • AI-supported Team Collaboration: AI to promote smart pairing between individuals, tasks and resources, whilst preserving some control over the time of delivery; curating group dynamics for enhanced synchronicity and productivity whilst maintaining transparency;
  • Collective Decision Making: Promote enhanced collective decision making by exploiting the effect of simple rules on social network structures whilst avoiding discriminating effects;  
  • Collective Learning: Identify and exploit insight from past operations to support future actions (e.g. project bidding) whilst identifying and eliminating outliers in a robust, evidence-based way;  
  • Human-Computer Interaction: Elicit and aggregate information from online activity (e.g. user reputation) for various operations (e.g. online rating system) whilst dealing with ambiguity (e.g. self-contradictions, missing data) and malicious manipulations (e.g. spamming);
  • Open Science: Promote the reuse, redistribution and reproduction of research, whilst maintaining appropriate attribution of credit and rigor
  • Organizational Design: Organizations designed such that they promote enhanced collective functions (e.g. social learning, culture) whilst preserving accountability and auditability;
  • Rumor Propagation within Social/Collaborative Platforms: Maintaining their self-organized nature, whilst restricting the diffusion of falsehoods and emergence of ‘echo chambers’;
  • Science of Science: Using modern bibliographic data to identify fruitful research trajectories and develop robust productivity measures, whilst reducing the marginalization of underrepresented groups; 

Pervasive theoretical challenges across these exemplar domains include: 

  • Regulating self-organization of the collective in an auditable way;
  • Generating value from dormant information; 
  • Prediction and intrinsic limitations; 
  • Big vs. Useful Data;

We are delighted to welcome the 9th International Conference on Social Informatics (SocInfo 2017) to Oxford, UK, in September 2017.

SocInfo is an interdisciplinary venue for researchers from Computer Science, Informatics, Social Sciences and Management Sciences to share ideas and opinions, and present original research work on studying the interplay between socially-centric platforms and social phenomena.
The ultimate goal of Social Informatics is to create better understanding of socially-centric platforms not just as a technology, but also as a set of social phenomena. To that end, we are inviting interdisciplinary papers, on applying information technology in the study of social phenomena, on applying social concepts in the design of information systems, on applying methods from the social sciences in the study of social computing and information systems, on applying computational algorithms to facilitate the study of social systems and human social dynamics, and on designing information and communication technologies that consider social context.
