Tomorrow belongs to the tablet

Tomorrow belongs to the tablet | Curtin iPad User Group | Scoop.it
Is Apple's next big thing already out there?

This raises a more basic question: Why are people willing to spend $329 on an iPad when they can get an Android tablet for $200? It's not because the iPad is prettier or more powerful. It's because it's more useful – because its App Store is packed with more apps than you'll find for any other tablet. Apple says it has 350,000 tablet-specific apps in its store; Google has never disclosed the number of tablet-specific Android apps, but anyone who's ever perused the Play store knows the number is tiny. This is a crucial advantage, because unlike a phone, a tablet is pretty useless without great apps.

IT Does Not Love iPads -- Campus Technology

IT Does Not Love iPads -- Campus Technology | Curtin iPad User Group | Scoop.it
Students and faculty may love them, but IT personnel get a major headache when they try to integrate Apple tablets--and the company's TV technology--in an enterprise setting.
Kim Flintoff's insight:

It begs the question - Apple is not setting out to be the edtech tablet provider - although there is some marketing to that sector. They have consistently indicated the iPad is a personal device... treat them that way and devolve repsonsibility to the end user rather than tie them up with an additonal layer of limitation.  Apple have a product range that can be deployed across the enterprise... MacBook comes to mind...

The Smart Way to Use iPads in the Classroom

The Smart Way to Use iPads in the Classroom | Curtin iPad User Group | Scoop.it
The school has an unconventional take on the iPad’s purpose. The devices are not really valued as portable screens or mobile gaming devices. Teachers I talked to seemed uninterested, almost dismissive, of animations and gamelike apps. Instead, the tablets were intended to be used as video cameras, audio recorders, and multimedia notebooks of individual students’ creations. The teachers cared most about how the devices could capture moments that told stories about their students’ experiences in school. Instead of focusing on what was coming out of the iPad, they were focused on what was going into it.
Kim Flintoff's insight:

Focusses on K-12 but there are some key insights that can extend into any learning context.

Promoting Student Engagement by Integrating New Technology into Tertiary Education: The Role of the iPad | Manuguerra | Asian Social Science

Promoting Student Engagement by Integrating New Technology into Tertiary Education: The Role of the iPad | Manuguerra | Asian Social Science | Curtin iPad User Group | Scoop.it

Abstract
Teachers in tertiary education need new strategies to communicate with students of the net generation and to shape enticing educational  experiences for them. The use of new approaches such as video-recorded lectures to communicate directly and individually with all students has been the preserve of technology-savvy educators.
However, a recent technological advance – the Apple iPad – has the potential to change this situation, offering access to effective and efficient pedagogy in an easy and intuitive way. This paper is a report on the use of the iPad in teaching activities over the past 15 months, showing how it can be used to enhance engagement with learning for tertiary students, both those studying live on campus and those studying at a distance.

Stampsy is a new iPad app for creating digital content. The steps are easy to follow - add images and text to your page using drag-and-drop method. Change colours or fonts, and design the page as you like.

The result you'll get is a linear presentation with great visual potential, perfect for storytelling purposes.

There is a small inconvenience though - you will need a Facebook account to use the application.

The app is free. Download it here https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/stampsy/id582398120?mt=8

ghbrett's curator insight, May 8, 2013 9:32 AM

Stampsy is an interesting graphic tool currently for the iPad. It has a few necessry tools such as Headline, Text, Images, Colour Palette, Various Fonts, and best of all it is limited to 10 pages. If Powerpoints were limited to 10 pages I wonder how much real information would be lost? No doubt we'd see the important information. Check it out.

7 Great iPad Apps to Promote Visual Thinking ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

7 Great iPad Apps to Promote Visual Thinking ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Curtin iPad User Group | Scoop.it

"Today while I was looking for a citation from " Making Thinking Visible: How to Promote Engagement, Understanding, and Independence for All Learners " , it dawned on me to compile a list of the  popular iPad apps that promote visual thinking. Making Thinking Visible is by all means a must read for those of you interested in knowing how thinking can be made visible at any grade level and across all subject areas through the use of effective questioning, listening, documentation, and facilitative structures called thinking routines. Another book I have in my shelf and which is more or less similar to the one cited above is " Blah Blah Blah: What To Do When Words Don't Work " in which Dan walks his readers through the different practices of making thinking vivid with less words.

Based on these reads and to the best of my knowledge, the apps I selected for you today will defnitely help you, your kids and students think visually and visibly. Enjoy"
