Welcome to Integrating iPads into the Classroom
Over 1.5 million iPads are currently in use in educational institutions, which includes over 1,000 one-to-one programs. Nearly every week, another school makes the headlines by implementing an iPad-to-student program. For many, such technology integration programs make perfect sense:
Technology is a tool, which can facilitate problem-based learning.
Technology is engaging, and students are motivated by such engagement.
A new Open Access eBook written by Sabrina Huber, focuses on a didactical approach to integrating iPads in the classroom. Written as a diploma thesis, it will be of interest to anyone using iPads as a tool for learning.
"St Agnes Catholic High School are moving ahead with their 1 to 1 program for their Year 8 students. St Agnes was involved in the trial of iPads during 2010 and since then have researched and consulted extensively with a strategic process across staff, students and parents towards ensuring an effective implementation program. This has included learning opportunites for staff and students as well as ongoing communication across the school community. The focus has been on the learning and how this device could assist in providing real mobile learning opportunities."
All students and faculty at Regis College in Weston, Mass., will get iPads when the fall semester begins, the latest in a growing number of educational institutions to take the digital leap to tablets.
Technology, by itself, isn't curative. Human agency shapes the path.In light of this dynamic, two critical questions need to be asked and provisionally answered when integrating technology into education. The first question, while obvious at first glance, isn't always fully articulated: "What are the educational goals of technology integration?"
The second question is equally important and often more elusive: "Do the current systems and processes support the integrative and innovative goals?"

KF: It seems quite slow over my work wifi but it does appear to have a wide ranging set of functions. Have just edited a PPT file from Dropbox using this and it worked well - if a bit sluggish in response.
Microsoft's combination of SkyDrive and Office Web Apps is great for working online as long as you're using a traditional mouse-and-keyboard PC. But the company doesn't currently support iPads.
Even though Microsoft does not yet officially support the iPad with its Office Web Apps, you can still access the online productivity suite thanks to Google’s recently released Chrome browser for iOS. It’s not a perfect solution, but if you need to get some editing done in a pinch itll work.
UC Irvine School of Medicine's iMedEd Initiative takes the medical curriculum into the digital age with the iPad.
With our iMedEd Initiative, UC Irvine’s School of Medicine is reinventing the traditional medical school curriculum for the 21st century, becoming one of the first in the nation to build a completely digital, interactive learning environment for the entering class of 2014.
The initiative is designed to foster highly individualized and small-group learning for a richer medical school experience.
We had 2,242 people tell us about how they actually use the iPad. See the results here.
KF: Some interesting trends emerge. The iPad seems to be winning over its users and they are using it more - using it more often, for more activities and have little interest in what else is on offer in the tablet marketplace.

Apple’s online educational catalog, iTunes U, updated its app and website on Wednesday by adding enhanced features to make it even more convenient for students and educators. Now, educators have the ability to distribute courses privately and invite students to take them. Any teacher can signup to offer courses via iTunes U.
KF: These shifts follow a global trend of shifting from LMS to VLE/PLE. The capabilities of iTunesU are being realised by many institutions.
"If your Mac can print to your printer, so can your iOS device. Grab the trial version of Printopia to check this out, and decide if it’s worth the $20 for the full version. Once downloaded, open the .zip file, which will become the folder Printopia Demo. Open that folder and double click on the Install Printopia Demo icon to install the preference pane that makes this all work."

"So one of my first projects using the iPads was to get them to think about ways the devices could help students do better in school.
It was originally supposed to be a mandatory project, but I assigned it far too close to end of the grading period for that to be fair. That's why it became an extra credit project. I would highly recommend doing this project with every iPad-wielding student."
UC Irvine’s School of Medicine is reinventing the traditional medical school curriculum for the 21st century, becoming one of the first in the nation to build a completely digital, interactive learning environment for the entering class of 2014.
UC Irvine’s iMedEd Initiative will foster highly individualized and small-group learning for a richer medical school experience. The program, targeted initially at first-year students, aims to transform the classic lecturer-passive listener model with digital textbooks, online curricula, audio and video libraries, podcasts and other technological advances such as digital stethoscopes and portable ultrasound units.
The pilot program uses Apple’s iPad to digitally house the entire first-year curriculum, outlines, handouts and essential textbooks. The devices, which are provided to each entering student, also are loaded with hundreds of medical applications, note-taking and recording capabilities, and many other tools that complement diverse learning styles. Short, topic-based podcast lectures can be reviewed as often as desired as preparation for small-group discussions.
