Jim Harmon's curator insight, December 31, 2012 7:53 AM

As more schools transition to 1:1 programs, many teachers ask for tips and strategies for using iPads in the classroom in transformative ways. Here are just a few possibilities.

Lou Salza's curator insight, January 2, 2013 3:52 PM

"The iPad is not magic, and as many educators have found integrating them meaningfully is by no means a just-add-water proposition.

The same applies to Project-Based Learning.

Project-Based Learning is a method of giving learners access to curriculum in authentic ways that promote collaboration, design, imagination, and innovation while also allowing for more natural integration of digital and social media. Below we’ve offered 23 ways that the iPad can be used in your classroom. While given strategies may or may not fit exactly into your curriculum or grade level, consider them instead as a kind of board of ideas to inspire your own thinking. If “Designing a tire” is beyond the ability of your 4th graders (and you’re certain of that), what else might they design instead? If analyzing narrative design sounds below your college freshman, what might them “consume and design” instead?

Note that the visual is also arranged in a kind of visual spectrum, as our past visuals have been. But this time, rather than being distributed by complexity, it is instead laid out in terms of the kind of workflow a learner might encounter in a 21st century, K-20, project-based learning environment."

iPad as the Teacher's Pet - Version 2.0 by @TonyVincent | Curtin iPad User Group | Scoop.it

An iPad can be a teacher’s very handy assistant! Last year I published an infographic titled "iPad as the Teacher’s Pet” and I have updated it to version 2.0. It’s all about what can be done by Pad-using educators, whether or not their students have iPads. It is divided into seven sections:

PowerPoint for iPad - Worth a Second Look [VIDEO] - teachingwithipad.org | Curtin iPad User Group | Scoop.it

"Despite my ramblings and complaints about the $99 subscription needed to properly use Microsoft's office last week, I have come to enjoy using PowerPoint for iPad in the classroom. No, I have not paid the money to subscribe. In fact, I chose to actually delete Word and Excel as I don't see a need for them, and they were taking nearly 1GB of my iPad storage.

If you want to just use the free version of the three apps, you don't have the ability to edit nor create files. However, for PowerPoint, the “read-only” feature is actually very useful in my teaching. Since most people will have ready-made PowerPoints already created, they will be able to access and project them to their class using a projector."

I Finally Can Use My iPad 1 Again - Tech the Plunge

I Finally Can Use My iPad 1 Again - Tech the Plunge | Curtin iPad User Group | Scoop.it

"I’ve mentioned before that I’m extremely disappointed in Apple’s decision to completely abandon the iPad 1.  It was released in April of 2010 and I received one for Christmas that same year. In September of 2012 Apple released iOS 6. But, it was not available for the iPad 1! So, for me, my iPad 1 lasted 21 months!!!!!! So while my six-year old laptop continues to be reliable and runs everything, my iPad has laid mostly dormant for quite awhile.

I’m not one to give up easily and so every once in awhile I’d update the apps and try once again to see if I could make my iPad 1 usable again. However, although many apps still worked okay, they were extremely slow!!!! In addition, whenever I hear of a great new iPad app the first thing I check is which operating systems it supports. Most likely I’m out of luck.

But yesterday I came across a nice article from PC World on How to turn an old phone or tablet into a PC productivity tool.  The article had several suggestions but the one that made sense for me was “Turn your tablet into a full-blown command center.”

iPads in Teaching - What Are They For? - Ideas Out There | Curtin iPad User Group | Scoop.it

"This picture was drawn in response to a post called 'Drawing On A Napkin: Is This How iPads Function In A Traditional Classroom?' by the esteemed Terry Heick.

Mine was not drawn on a napkin, but on Notability. And, to answer that snarky Johannesburg based iPad trainer who cannot believe I can do what I do using the iPad, yes I did create it myself!

This is what I think iPads are 'for' in education. Let me know what you think."

How to get an App Store refund for kids' accidental in-app purchases

How to get an App Store refund for kids' accidental in-app purchases | Curtin iPad User Group | Scoop.it

In-app purchases have become a thorny issue for customers in Apple’s ecosystem. Earlier this year, Cupertino settled with the US Federal Trade Commission over incidents where minors made in-app purchases – in some cases exorbitant ones – without the knowledge of their parents.

But if you (or someone you know) has been bitten by one of these inadvertent purchases, how can you go about recouping your money? If visions of paperwork and annoying forms are swimming before your eyes, don’t sweat it: Apple’s made it pretty easy to put in your request without even leaving your computer.

With so much information available to today's students through iPads, they must learn to curate it to get the maximum benefit and experience.

Schools like Dan’s realize that Curation, the intentional selection, organizing, and maintaining of works or artifacts, is an increasingly important skill in the digital world. With the wealth of knowledge and information accessible through a network connection and a few taps, students must not only be able to navigate and evaluate what they find, but they must they also be able to curate effectively. With information at the user’s fingertips, and apps that allow for interaction, shelving, tagging, and personalization, the iPad can allow students to create an organized network of learning resources that can seamlessly integrate with resource networks of other students and teachers.

Creating An iPad Workflow For Teachers, Students, And Parents - TeachThought

Creating An iPad Workflow For Teachers, Students, And Parents - TeachThought | Curtin iPad User Group | Scoop.it

"Using tablets in the classroom–whether iPads, Androids, or surging Windows devices–is largely a matter of workflow.

If you can forgive a mixed metaphor, the traditional classroom sees the teacher as the both the director and the bottleneck of all productivity. They create assignments, assess proficiency, respond to assessment data, and refine planned instruction in light of constantly changing circumstances.

This is challenging in any context, but in 1:1 and mobile learning environments, it’s even more complex. With tablets, every student has both an information portal and a digital printing press. This means they can reach both communities and potential collaborators.

The above graphic from @ipadwells addresses this issue with a helpful graphic that visualizes a workflow, while offering up representative apps for each step of the process."
