Scotland study: Tablet devices in schools beneficial to children

Scotland study: Tablet devices in schools beneficial to children | Curtin iPad User Group | Scoop.it
The research focused on four central themes in order to evaluate the overall effectiveness of these devices in assisting with learning, and was carried out by researchers from the Technology Enhanced Learning Research group at the Faculty of Education at the University. 1. Impact of tablet devices on teaching and learning generally The study found that benefits included greater motivation, engagement, parental involvement and understanding of complex ideas. 2. Leader and management issues (stemming from a deployment of devices) The study found that teachers are ‘equally engaged’ by the use of such a device, which has a low learning curve enabling them to use it immediately as a teaching tool and a learning tool for themselves. 3. Professional development of teachers and how teachers cope with using new technology The research found that ‘use of the device is contributing to significant changes in the way teachers approach their professional role as educators and is changing the way they see themselves and their pedagogy’. 4. Parental engagement The study showed that parents become more engaged with the school and their child’s learning when the iPad travels home with the student.

Managing iPad Videos in Schools- Visual Guide for Teachers ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

Managing iPad Videos in Schools- Visual Guide for Teachers ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Curtin iPad User Group | Scoop.it

""Managing iPad YouTube in Schools" is a visual guide created by iPadWells

from iPad4Schools.

In this guide iPadWells walks teachers through the process they use in their school to create, share and teach using videos. YouTube is the principal video hosting used in this guide. That being said, it does not mean that the guide is not relevant for your teaching situation even if YuTube is banned in your school. You can still benefit from the tips and ideas provided by iPadWells on how to create enhanced videos using a wide variety of apps and share them with students who can access them at home."

I’m creating a website of Mac and iOS tutorials and tips and I’m wondering if there’s a way to make a screen recording in iOS like there is through QuickTime in OS X.

Regrettably, unless you jailbreak your device, there isn’t a way to capture its screen directly on the device. However, with the help of your Mac, it can be easily done.

Tablets fall out of favour in NSW classrooms

Tablets fall out of favour in NSW classrooms | Curtin iPad User Group | Scoop.it
Once hailed as the poster child of digital interactive learning, tablets are falling increasingly out of favour in NSW schools.
Peter Mellow's insight:

I would really like to see 'how' they used the devices in the classroom. I can see this as another case of blame the technology (device) rather than the learning design for the activities.

I would have thought that a device with a range of scientific instruments included in it (gyroscope, accelerometer, two cameras), would be more useful for collecting and reporting on data/events than a keyboard with a screen. Sounds like a typewriter vs an educational swiss army knife to me.

Do we want our children to be able to ask the right questions with inquiry based learning or be able to type 40 words a minute?

How To 'App Smash' And Implement Digital Storytelling On The iPad - Edudemic

How To 'App Smash' And Implement Digital Storytelling On The iPad - Edudemic | Curtin iPad User Group | Scoop.it

by Nikolaos Chatzopoulos

"App smashing, the process of using more than one apps in conjunction with one another to create a final product, is a concept that allows students to create engaging educational projects and illustrate their creativity in multifaceted ways. One of the most gratifying and effective ways to use app smashing in the classroom is to create digital storytelling projects. The concept of digital storytelling is emerging as a form of personal and collective expression of knowledge, ideas, and perceptions. Its numerous and positive effects on students’ communication skills are well documented. Digital storytelling is the perfect vehicle for the delivery of visual and audio stimuli that greatly enhance a storyline or a simple narrative."

Apple Tech advice: How to replace the glass on an old iPad

I’ve been both curious and terrified about the process of replacing damaged front glass on a first-or second-generation iPad, but this was the last thing I wanted to attempt on my own. I ventured over to Fix That Mac in Berkeley, California to talk to Rory Pierce and get the perspective of someone who repairs several iPad screens per week and is confident in what he’s doing.

Peter Mellow's insight:

Or, get a stall at a shopping mall to do it for you for a very good price!
