Terry Heick: The iPad’s Past, Present & Future In Learning Environments | WiredAcademic | Curtin iPad User Group | Scoop.it

Education has an odd reputation for both resisting change, and short-sightedly jumping on emerging edu-trends. This odd juxtaposition colors much of the school reform debate, and bleeds into its adoption of technology as well. In many schools, iPads are being used in extraordinary ways to unleash student learning, while in others it’s characterized as a luxury, lacking priority in an instructional setting where the curriculum and instruction may not considered to be up-to-snuff.

Ms Kelleher, the school's principal, said that the focus "shouldn't be on the technology, it should always be on the learning".

But she said teachers can be "frustrated by the static nature of traditional textbooks. They are often expensive and out of date almost as soon as they are published."

Developing the digital course materials, which pupils can use at school or at home, has been "very positive" and rather than reducing the role of the teacher, she says that it makes the teacher "more important than ever".

Teacher’s use of iPads in higher education

Teacher’s use of iPads in higher education.  Daniel Churchill & Tianchong Wang

Mobile devices (e.g. iPads or galaxy tab) are increasingly being used in educational contexts. There has been growing investment in higher education institutions in Hong Kong by the HKSAR Education Bureau in relation to educational uses of mobile technology. However, current research into educational applications of this technology is limited. This article reports results of a qualitative study that investigated how higher education teachers use iPads to facilitate their practice. The study results provide insight into both the educational affordances of iPad technology and the ways in which teachers’ personal or private theories mediate these affordances. The study outcomes contribute to theoretical understanding of higher education teacher changes through adoption of mobile technology. Furthermore, the outcomes provide a set of recommendations for applications of iPads and similar technologies in higher education and ways to support teachers to effectively adopt such technology in their practices.

Teachers Barely Used iPads From Controversial $500 Million Contract In Los Angeles

Teachers Barely Used iPads From Controversial $500 Million Contract In Los Angeles | Curtin iPad User Group | Scoop.it
Last year, the Los Angeles school district granted teachers iPads loaded with Pearson curriculum in a controversial deal that was later voided. A new report observed most teachers weren’t using them.
Kim Flintoff's insight:

If the devices were there then there is no reason they couldn't be used regularly in an active, student-centred, inquiry driven model of learning engagement.  Set aside all the riduclous excuses about missing "content" and ask what really stopped teachers picking them up and putting them in the hands of learners.  This is the 21st Century - there is no valid reason for first world qualified teachers to ignore the opportunities afforded by meangingful technological engagement.

Here's a feel-good article! I have seen how both tablets, laptops, and even handhelds like smartphones or iPods have been helpful for my own autistic son. I wish some of this technology had come out sooner! It's so good to see that there's some actual data to back the concept that these are invaluable tools for autistic kids, and for those with communications disabilities in general.

Merja Saarela's curator insight, September 13, 7:17 AM

I believe this is very good news for many parents struggling with communication challenges of their autistic child. Reserch results show remarkable progress especially with communication skills. So playing with the tablet seems to be very helpful for these children and their families.
