Flipped Classroom Defined

Flipped Classroom Defined | Current Trends in Education | Scoop.it

The flipped classroom provides avenues for teachers to become facilitators of learning and move away from the sage on a stage approach to teaching. The foundational concepts of instructors guiding students or facilitating their progress are based on the idea that the instructor is no longer at the center of the interaction and application of knowledge. The instructor remains available to students as a facilitator of resources, a resource who should frequently check students for understanding for their learning.

10 Tools for Increasing Engagement in Online Courses

10 Tools for Increasing Engagement in Online Courses | Current Trends in Education | Scoop.it

Over the last few years I've done a lot of work developing writing and redeveloping online courses and course materials. In the initial rush to get learning online many organisations got themselves a Moodle platform and then attached a whole load of PDFs and .docs, added some forums and the odd video clip and called it an online course. It's no surprise then that drop out rates for online learning courses have been so high.

Flipped Classroom Infographic

Flipped Classroom Infographic | Current Trends in Education | Scoop.it
Many educators are experimenting with the idea of a flipped classroom model. Find out what it is and why everyone's talking about it.

This infographic was created by Knewton using Column Five Infographics. (Knewton has recently partnered with Pearson on a Big Data and personalized instruction  initative.)

Of particular interest are the results and outcome claims. Credited sources include Jeremy F. Strayer of Ohio State University, The Flipped Class Conference 2011, Education Week and others.

Strayer is the author of: The effects of the classroom flip on the learning environment: A comparison of learning activity in a traditional classroom and a flip classroom that used an intelligent tutoring system, a book published by Ohio State in 2007.

I'm very interested in the promise of intelligent (automated) tutoring systems.

When it comes to the Flipped classroom, the teacher remains essential. It's the presentation and differentiation possibilities that change.

The Flipped Classroom concept is a blended classroom model worth considering.  ~ Dennis O'Connor
