The Government Shutdown Explained (Like You're an Idiot)
ABC News
So, it's happened. Congress could not agree on a budget and the U.S. federal government has shut down all non-essential services.
Paul Locker's insight:

Summary: Each year our government comes together to agree on the national budget to fund the government. On September 30, Congress was unable to decide on how to allocate the funds. Because of this, there was no plan as to how to pay government employees and fund programs, so the government shut down on  October 1. Services that are considered essential like Medicare, mail delivery, tax collection, and the military continue to operate. The sticking point in the negotiations was the funding of Obamacare, which would make it illegal to not  have health insurance. Obamacare will not be affected by the shutdown. its just a matter of waiting  until one side is willing to cut a deal until the government can get rolling again.

Opinion:  I think that in the long run the shutdown will end up hurting everybody. If it lasts for a while those people who are off the payroll won't be earning any money, and therefore won't be spending any money either. Unfortunately I don't really know enough of the arguments for or against Obamacare so I can't really weigh in on  whether I think the shutdown is worth it or not. But on the outside it doesn't appear so.
