Loren Vacko's insight:

This is a monumental new law that is being passed and is now going to be added to two more states and will surely make the american people happier.

Video of LAPD officer kicking woman should be public, lawyer says

Video of LAPD officer kicking woman should be public, lawyer says | Current Events | Scoop.it
Video from a police cruiser camera that shows an LAPD officer kicking a restrained woman -- who later died -- needs to made public, the family attorney said Thursday.
Loren Vacko's insight:

I like this current event because it shows what is going on in the LAPD. And it also shows how these decorated officers can sometimes make mistakes and be dirty police officers. I agree with the lawyer in that the video needs to be showed to the public for many resons. The man behind this needs to be punsihed and cant just get a slap on the wrists. It is out of the respect of the family that they dont show it however Im sure if they did the community would be outrsged and want this monster off the police force.

City Opera Board Says It May Enter Bankruptcy

City Opera Board Says It May Enter Bankruptcy | Current Events | Scoop.it
The board of New York City Opera voted Thursday to begin bankruptcy proceedings next week and wind down the company’s affairs if it fails to raise $7 million by Monday.
Loren Vacko's insight:

I found this to be interesting because New York always presents itself as a major capital of entertainment and now one of the biggest performaces is going bankrupt. They are now in the tough spot of having to produce "7 million" by monday. As the play for anna nicole is playing in the theatre now, the critics say it is unlikely they will raise the money. Since moving venues they have had less and less shows and thats where they are missing out and it is going to hurt them in the long run.

Is New York Fashion Week Near the End of the Runway?

Is New York Fashion Week Near the End of the Runway? | Current Events | Scoop.it
The Lincoln Center site draws fire from many directions, as the schedule gets busier and crowds grow unwieldy.
Loren Vacko's insight:

New York fashion week has always been thought of as a big extravagent event and now, not so much. The designers and the people living around the big event are tired of it. The designers hate how big it is and how long it is and also how the people who are running it essentially dont care about them. As for the residents living around it, it is an inconvience and many noise complaints have been made. People are now limiting the amount of guests that they want to be there and who knows where it will stop.

Shutdown Over, Government Slowly Gets Back to Normal

Shutdown Over, Government Slowly Gets Back to Normal | Current Events | Scoop.it
Hundreds of thousands of employees began streaming back to work on Thursday after President Obama and Congress ended the shutdown, paving the way for another series of budget talks in the weeks ahead.
Loren Vacko's insight:

The government shut down is  over. I found this to be a very interesting and important article for many reasons, one of them being that I hadnt heard of the reopening. The debt budget was raised until february and there are talks especially from joe biden about how this needs to never happen again. The government sponsored programs, jobs and facilities are slowly but surely up and running and the community could'nt be happier. Explainging how there were line sof people waiting to get back to see the naitional monuments and with time everything will reopen completely again.

Britney Spears on risque video: It's 'hard to play sexy mom'

Britney Spears on risque video: It's 'hard to play sexy mom' | Current Events | Scoop.it
Britney Spears ' eye-catching video for "Work, Bitch" was supposed to be a lot racier, but she toned it down — that according to the mother of two.
Loren Vacko's insight:

This is a current event in the media that also has to deal partially with my op-ed paper. Brittany spears is such a critical person in the media and is and was so much in the news. She gew up and did about the same thing as miley and look how she is now presented in media and how she wants to present herself. These stars have to get out of a once viewed as a squeaky clean image and their transition is different but in the end it all works out.

Pope Francis takes issue with church focus on gays, abortion

Pope Francis takes issue with church focus on gays, abortion | Current Events | Scoop.it
ROME -- Pope Francis has warned that the Roman Catholic Church could lose its way if it focuses too much on enforcing rules against contraception , abortion and homosexuality, instead of throwing open its doors and making the church more...
Loren Vacko's insight:

This is a very big thing to be happening because the pope is such a big person in the community and for him to be accepting, and talking out about how the community needs to accept it. Many people of the church are against the gay community and this just shows that even people in higher power see how this needs to change and everyone needs to be accepted.

Warner Bros., Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling cut new movie deal

Warner Bros., Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling cut new movie deal | Current Events | Scoop.it
Warner Bros. and "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling are going to try to catch lightning in a bottle again.
Loren Vacko's insight:

I found this to be very interesting because J.K. Rowling is known by people across the world as the creator of Harry Potter. Just as how Daniel Radcliff will always be Harry Potter to many of fans, she will always be the creator and for her to step out and do another set of movies side from Harry Potter is completely nerve wrecking. Will the series be a good one? Will the fans be upset because to them all they want her to do is Harry Potter? And how will the two series compare and contrast?

Twitter Challenges Traditional Media

Twitter Challenges Traditional Media | Current Events | Scoop.it
NEW YORK — Cassy Hayes and Jasmine Coleman were among the first fans to arrive outside the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles where Michael Jackson was brought and later pronounced dead.

Loren Vacko's insight:

Social media has become a very large part of the world today and everyone seems to be becoming keen to it. It is a source of news all the way to celebrity sightings and everyone is signing on to see what it is all about.

July 15 #12

While doing my research for my weekly scoop.it!s I have noticed an interesting reoccurence. It seems that in every story I read there is a reference to a certain social media site as a source a news. This site would be the infamous twitter. Known to get many people into a bit of trouble and is responsible for multiple scandals, this website has exploded. It is a means of telling people you everything from your ideals to your lunch. Now it has become a common source for articles. Twitters 'trending' recond has "in some instances threatened to usurp media coverage of breaking news." It has even been used to assemble marches in Iran. Twitter can be manipulated to control a person's message or image. Someone can have a press conference on twitter without having to answer questions by simply blocking them. VeloNews.com calls it "one-sided." I think it is a disaster in the making. People have to much control and are to trusting. They will believe anything they here on the internet. Twitter harbors radicals that can voice their opinion loudly and clearly in the comfort of their homes or even from their mobile devices. It is scary just how much power you can hold when you are popular on the internet! Maybe the government should get a Twitter account. Or do they already have them? Would that be easier or just more confusing?
