Time to debunk the mammography myth

Time to debunk the mammography myth | Current Events | Scoop.it
Gayle Sulik and Bonnie Spanier say the benefits of regular mammograms have been greatly exaggerated and the hazards largely ignored
Kayla Serrano's insight:

The challenge is that you have to consider the other side of the equation which are the risks of the treatment. There is no doubt that for some people an early mammogram may save their life. On the other hand, if there are other cases where mammograms actually cause harm, we need to weigh this too.

There are a couple ways that mammograms could be harmful. The low amount of radiation from mammograms could in very rare cases cause cancer. More importantly, much of what is detected may never have caused a problem; however, the unnecessary surgeries to remove the harmless masses carry risks, and may create scar tissue that make it harder to detect future cancers.

Kayla Serrano's insight:

This article talks about strategies on how to read a scholarly sources. The first thing that is important when wearing a scholarly source is your audience because a profile of the intended audience is to be created, which means allowing writers to write in a manner that is understood by the intended audience. Most of us think that when reading a scholarly article it can be boring but its probably because you don’t know how to address the text.

US surgeon general calls for end of tobacco epidemic - Vision Insights and New Horizons

US surgeon general calls for end of tobacco epidemic Vision Insights and New Horizons The report, the first in more than a decade, found that smoking has killed more than 20 million Americans prematurely in the last half century, and warns that, if...
Kayla Serrano's insight:

I believe that smoking cigarettes has been a major problem in our society over the years given that, it is effectively causing disease and also causing many death. I think that if we can eliminate tobacco we would have less deaths and a much healthier environment as well. More than 3,200 youths under the age 18 try their first cigarette. I think that youths do this because they are influenced by the adults they see smoking. If we have less adults smoking than we will have less kids wanting to try a cigaret.

Medical marijuana and 'the entourage effect'

Medical marijuana and 'the entourage effect' | Current Events | Scoop.it
There are more than 480 natural components in the cannabis plant. Scientists believe all these likely exert a therapeutic effect, more than any single one.
Kayla Serrano's insight:

If you don't think cannabis should be legal, then back it up with facts. Don't start saying it has no medical value. If people like to get high on it then fine, if you don't agree with that then your problem is with people getting high. Trying to ban morphine because people like to get high on it will leave millions of cancer patients to die in pain. People should not have any illusions that medical marijuana is a farce. It’s real. It helps people. It’s documented. It’s called science.

Cocaine Boss’s Capture Signals Progress in Mexico’s Drug War

Cocaine Boss’s Capture Signals Progress in Mexico’s Drug War | Current Events | Scoop.it
The capture of the world’s most- wanted narcotics boss shows Mexico is making headway in a drug war that has curbed economic growth while helping to leave at least 92,000 people killed or missing since 2006.
Kayla Serrano's insight:

Guzman gained fame in 2001 after escaping from a high security prison and building up the Sinaloa Cartel, named after his home state and known for beheading its enemies or hanging their bodies in public places. He was at the center of a cocaine, heroin and marijuana trafficking industry that converted many parts of Mexico into battlegrounds as police tried to find trade routes and federal security forces for many years. The capture of El Chapo shows the determination of the current government to fight organized crime and illegal activities.

Social media is constantly changing – the tools available to us, and the way people use them. We are living during a time of change in how we can communicate with each other and what we choose to communicate where.

Kayla Serrano's insight:

This article is about sports and political events that are going to impact social media in mid 2014 such as the FIFA world cup that is going to be held in Brazil this year. The world cup is going to impact social media because Brazil is a huge market for social media and the 3rd largest market for twitter which means once the World cup starts there are going to be several tweets throughout the entire world cup, being that soccer is the most watched sport in the world.
